Without Forgetting the Basic Rule
Taggle can also be enjoyed simply as a generator of comebacks. Draw a Réflexions card, read a random sentence from it, then draw a Répliques card and choose the one you like best.
Repeat as many times as you like.
Feel free to invent your own rules as well. (The sheet invites players to send their house rules to the publisher's contact address for sharing on the blog; the address is omitted here.)
Essential Rule
The player who most recently trimmed their nails begins. They roll the die.
-
If they roll 1 or 2, they draw a Réflexions card, and the player on their left draws a Répliques card. The starting player reads reflection 1 or 2 (depending on the die), and the player on their left immediately answers with a reply of their choice.
-
If they roll 3, 4, 5 or 6, they draw a Répliques card, and the player on their left draws a Réflexions card. The player on their left reads the starting player a reflection of their choice, to which the starting player [the source scan is cut off here: the rest of this sentence, presumably the starting player's immediate reply, is not printed on the sheet].
After this reflection-reply exchange, the player who gave the reply is evaluated by the other players. If everyone appreciates their witty retort, the game continues. If one or more players call out "Taggle" for reasons of their own (or out of simple bad faith...), that player must step back one notch on their Taggle counter.
The player on the left continues by rolling the die. After a turn of play, the last player to have received a "Taggle" may impose on one or more opponents that they change places. The game stops as soon as a player has received 6 "Taggle". At that moment, everyone looks at their Taggle counter, and the ranking speaks for itself.
Main Rule of Taggle Original (Summary)
The cube box of Taggle Original makes it easy to combine your Taggle Original and Taggle d'Amour cards and to separate the Réflexions from the Répliques.
The combined set contains:
- 100 Réflexions cards
- 200 Répliques cards
- 10 Taggle cards
Choose a leader, generally the player who had the good idea to say "And what if we played Taggle?!"
The leader deals 1 Répliques card to each player and draws Réflexions cards. The leader reads a different reflection to each of the other players, and each of them immediately answers with a reply from their card.
At the end of the turn, the leader decides: the player whose reply is the least effective receives a "Taggle!" and steps back one notch on their Taggle counter.
On the next turn, the player on the left becomes the leader.
The game ends as soon as a player reaches the grim stage of Casse-toi boulet! (roughly "Get lost, you loser!" on the counter). The winner is the player who has received the fewest "Taggle!".
Note on the source: the sheet's final line reads "dans laggle", evidently a typo for "dans Taggle" (in Taggle); it is corrected here.
Note on the source: the sheet gives two end conditions, reaching the final stage of the Taggle counter (Casse-toi boulet!) in the summary and receiving 6 "Taggle" in the essential rule. Both are transcribed as printed; the sheet does not state how they interact.
