Table of Contents
Components
- 46 "Syllabus" cards
- 2 "Rules" cards ("Règle du jeu")
Goal
Be the first player to find, several times over, words using the syllable cards.
Setup
Shuffle the 46 "Syllabus" cards, then deal them among all players so that each player has the same number of cards.
Number of cards per player:
- 2 players: 22 cards each
- 3 players: 15 cards each
- 4 players: 11 cards each
- 5 players: 9 cards each
- 6 players: 7 cards each
The cards that are not dealt are placed face down in a pile on the table. They will be used at the start of the game.
The Game
Each player places their cards in front of them, face down.
Turn over the first card of the undealt pile and place it face up in the centre of the table. This is the starting card (carte de démarrage).
The youngest player takes the second card of the undealt pile (or, when there are no undealt cards left, the top card of their own pile), turns it over and places it in front of them, face up, so that all players can see it at the same moment.
At that moment, and simultaneously, all players try to find a word using the two syllables written on this card and on the starting card.
If a player finds a word, they say it out loud. If the other players accept the proposal, that player places their card next to the starting card, so that the two syllables that make up the word are side by side.
The player then turns over a new card from the undealt pile (or, when there are none left, the top card of their own pile). At that moment, all players try to find a new word that must connect to one of the cards already placed.
If nobody finds a word using these two cards, the player to the left of the player who just placed a card turns over a new card from their own pile. The players again try to find a word that must be formed with the starting card and the last card turned over.
As the game goes on, the possibilities for connection increase. The unused card may be placed at any time during the game. When this happens, the player who manages to place it may give one of their own cards to the player of their choice, face down and without choosing it.
Likewise, if a player manages to make a double connection, they may then give one of their own cards to the player of their choice, face down and without choosing it.
Notes
- All words are accepted, including first names, proper nouns and conjugated verbs.
- A word is formed phonetically, without regard to spelling. Accepted example: MÂT + ROND = MARRON.
- Silent letters are not counted when forming a word. Accepted example: PLAT + HAUT = PLATEAU.
- Identical words are not accepted within the same game.
End of the Game
The first player to place all of their cards wins the game, provided that they place their last card. If a player is unable to place their last card, they must instead place a card that was turned over by another player in order to win the game.
Variant: "Forts en thème"
The game is played in exactly the same way, except that:
- Silent letters are counted when forming a word. Example NOT accepted: PLAT + HAUT = PLATEAU.
- Verbs are accepted only in the infinitive.
