Rules
Each Nemesis in this expansion has 2 Soul Natures / Classes and consists of:
- 1 double-sided Nemesis Parchment. Each side is tied to one specific Soul Nature / Class and is designed to match its Hero counterpart.
- 2 Enemy cards, one for each Soul Nature / Class
- 1 red Nemesis figure, which represents the Nemesis on the battlefield
The Soulrank symbol gives a number that corresponds to the highest Soulrank of the Heroes in play. The number used is not "dynamic". That means that once it is set, it does not change again to reflect changes in the Heroes' Soulrank.
The Life Point Modifier markers can be used to track the additional life points that Enemies are granted by the Soul Gem symbol. For example, they are needed to determine a Nemesis's starting life points, or to show the number of Soul Gems once it has been defeated.
In play, a Nemesis is treated like a normal red Enemy whose preferred target is always its Hero counterpart.
You can add Nemeses during adventure setup, using one (or several, if you dare) of the following methods. Sooner or later you have to face your evil twins, and your fate!
- Nemesis Enemy card: Shuffle this card into the Enemy card deck. As soon as this card is drawn, it is removed from the adventure and the Nemesis of the active player is brought into play. The same Class as the Hero must be chosen. The red Nemesis of the active Hero is brought into play in the corresponding Class.
- Nemesis Shadow: Randomly replaces one (or more) Shadow markers in the Shadow marker supply (Special Enemy and Special Event excluded) with this Nemesis Shadow marker. When this Shadow is revealed, it is replaced by the Nemesis of the active player. The same Class as the Hero must be chosen.
- Nemesis Challenge: Assigns your Hero group this special Challenge card at the start of the campaign or for a standalone adventure. Once the three tasks of the Challenge are fulfilled, the Nemesis of the active Hero is brought into play. The same Class as the Hero must be chosen. Then the Challenge is assigned to the Hero group again.
- The tasks printed on the Challenge card are: a Hero gains 1 Soulrank; a Hero loses 1 Soulrank; a Hero performs an action that does not match their Soul Nature. Transcriber note: the card is only a small thumbnail on the sheet, so the three tasks are taken from the sheet's text layer. Their order on the card could not be confirmed.
- The reward on the Challenge card is: bring 1 Nemesis into play.
- If the Nemesis cannot be brought into play because of missing Portals, for example because the last task was fulfilled during the journey, the Nemesis is set aside and brought into play as soon as possible, e.g. at the start of the next adventure.
Note: The Nemesis has split off from the hidden part of the Hero's soul. Therefore its abilities and appearance represent the path the Hero did not choose, even if the Nemesis has the same Class and Soul Nature.
Each red Nemesis can only be defeated once per adventure. When it is defeated, it is removed from the adventure. If the same Hero reveals or uncovers a second Nemesis in the same adventure, the Nemesis of the Hero to the left of the active Hero is brought into play instead. If that Hero has also already met their Nemesis, continue until you reach a Hero who has not yet met their Nemesis in this adventure.
In addition to the Nemeses of the Heroes, this expansion contains a new red Enemy, available in two variants, represented by the two sides of the Enemy Parchment and the two Enemy cards. They share the same figure.
- White Tiger (Act I)
- Enraged White Tiger (Act II)
This Enemy can be used in any adventure. Shuffle the Enemy ability Wild Pet into the Enemy ability card deck, but beware... It is rumoured that this creature is a deadly challenge even for the bravest Heroes!
