Game Setup
The hungriest player is the dealer; he shuffles the deck and places it at the center of the table. Each player chooses a color and takes 5 dice of that color, one tile and a pair of chopsticks.
A player's gaming area should look like this:
- Place your player tile in front of you and your chopsticks slightly farther from you, above the tile.
- Place your dice in front of you. Their faces should show the matching table depicted in the matching space of your player tile (4 down, 1 up).
When all players are ready, the game can begin.
Gameplay
The game is played in a series of rounds.
Each round begins when the dealer reveals the top card of the deck and places it at the center of the table so that all players can clearly see it.
All players bow to each other in typical Japanese fashion (joining their hands in an act of prayer), say "Sushi War", and then hold the chopsticks. Using the chopsticks, they will have to assemble the shown picture on their player tile, making sure that all dice remain inside the table picture, without lean over the edges.
Composition
Each player will have to pile up their dice from bottom to top, in the order shown on the revealed card. (The shown symbols will have to appear on the dice's top sides), effectively building a tower of sushi.
They will have to do this EXCLUSIVELY using their chopsticks.
As soon as a player has completed her tower, she drops the chopsticks and declares "SUSHI WAR!", winning the round.
The player who won the round takes the revealed card and places it next to her player tile. In doing so, she scores a number of points equal to the sushi pieces forming her tower (4 or 5). Certain combos may provide additional points (see below).
Then a new round begins. The player who won the last round will be the dealer in the upcoming one. She reveals a new card from the deck and places it at the center of the table, and a new round begins.
4 Pieces Sushi Cards
When a 5 pieces card is revealed, every player will have to assemble their sushi tower with 4 dice. You can use your additional die (the fifth) to demolish another player's tower, but you will also have to throw it using the chopsticks.
Editor's note: the printed English body of this section reads "When a 5 pieces card", although the section heading, the Italian and the Spanish text all refer to a 4 pieces card. The wording is kept as printed.
If by casting down an opponent's tower you are the first to complete your composition, you will score twice the points granted by the card. An easy way to track your points is to store your "normal score" cards vertically and your "double score" cards horizontally.
Example: The player has scored 18 points.
5 Pieces Sushi Cards
- When a 5 pieces card is revealed, all players will have to assemble their composition without hindering the others.
N.B.
After a player wins a round, they will have to play the next round with a penalty:
- 1 victory: Hold your chopsticks with the other hand.
- 2 victories in a row: Hold your chopsticks as a pair of swords, one in each hand.
Victory Conditions
The first player to score 20 points is the winner.
Final Notes:
It's also possible to play in teams: the first team to score 30 points wins the game.
Special Challenge Cards
When you reveal a challenge card, you must join a special contest that will push the players' skills to the limit. Each Challenge card grants 5 points to the winner.
Sushi Sky Diving
Draw a circle using 15 dice. In turn, every player stands up, picks a die from the table with her chopsticks and drops it in the circle from at least 1 meter. If the die remains inside the circle, the player succeeds (it's okay if the dropped die may bumps against the other dice). If more than one player succeeds, all tied players drop another die until one winner is declared.
Sushi Pool
Place one die at the center of the table, place two chopsticks on the right and on the left of that die, and two dice next to the chopsticks. Then remove the central die and the chopsticks, so that only the outer dice remain.
Each player, in turn, hits a die with a chopstick, using it as if it were a billiard cue, at a range of three chopsticks from the target. If the die rolls between the two central dice without touching them, the player succeeds. If more than one player succeeds, all tied players drop make another test until one winner is declared.
Sushi Bowling
Build a pyramid of dice as shown in the picture. In their turn, every player has one single die to score a strike (the lowest row does not count, of course). In case of a tie, the players with the same highest score play an additional turn until one winner is declared.
Sushi Golf
Place 3 dice along one edge of the table. You will have to hit these dice. Then place 3 more dice along the opposite edge of the table (their placement will remain the same for all players). On their turn, a player stands up and, in a typical "golfing" posture, they will throw their 3 dice, one at a time, to hit the dice on the other edge of the table. The player who hits most dice is the winner. In case of a tie, play 3 additional throws until one winner is declared.
Sushi Snake
Place one die at the center of the table. Each player prepares one die in their own play area (make sure everybody's dice is placed at the same distance from the central one). Then the players, holding a chopstick in their fist, will have to push their die until it touches the central die, without ever removing the chopstick from the die. If a player ever removes her chopstick from her die, they must begin again from the starting position.
The first player to touch the central die with her own is the winner.
