Kleine Küchenkunde (Little Culinary Lore)

  • Only one dish goes on the plate. However, matching side dishes can be added to it, either at the same time or one after another, several of them.

Boxed summary: only 1 main course + (colour-)matching side dish(es).

  • Only matching side dishes (of the same colour) or muesli may be served with the main courses (meat, fish, cake).

  • Only further fast food or muesli may be served with fast food.

  • Only further ready-made meals or muesli may be served with ready-made meals.

Matching chart (illustrated on the printed page):

  • Dumplings only with meat.
  • Potatoes only with fish.
  • Cream only with cake.
  • Fast food only with fast food.
  • Ready-made meal only with ready-made meal.
  • Muesli goes with everything.

Diätische Maßnahmen (Dietary Measures)

Reduction cards make it possible to eat the dishes served in a moderated form, or even completely calorie-free.

  • The card "FdH" halves the respective calorie value. (Printed illustration caption: "Friß die Hälfte", eat half.)
  • The card "Nulldiät" allows calorie-free eating.
  • The card "Körnerkur" limits the calorie count to the muesli. If there is no muesli on the plate, count the Körnerkur like Nulldiät.
  • The card "Abführpille" makes the player lose "2"; the figure is moved 2 spaces toward "Suppenkasper".
  • The card "Nein! eß ich nicht" makes the player lose "1"; the figure is moved 1 space toward "Suppenkasper". At the same time the player refuses to eat and serves the dish to his left-hand neighbour.

Boxed illustration "Essen mit Reduzierungs-Karte" (eating with a reduction card): FdH, Nulldiät, Körnerkur, Abführpille, and "Weiterreichen mit Reduzierkarte: 'Nein, eß ich nicht'" (passing on with a reduction card: "No, I won't eat it"), which is marked "Abnehmen um 1" (lose 1).

IMPORTANT! If the player refuses to eat and a reduction card "Nein, eß ich nicht" has been placed on the plate, no further side dishes or muesli may be added. Only reduction cards may then be played, if one does not want to eat the dish.

Boxed note: If "Nein, eß ich nicht" has been served, only reduction cards may still be played.

2. Object of the Game

Each player has a dream figure (Traumfigur) at the start of the game. If a player, during the course of the game, wastes away to "Suppenkasper", or bursts out of all seams as a "thick chunk" (Dicker Brocken), then the game ends. The winner is the player who, after the calorie feast is complete, has kept their weight best and stands on the "Traumfigur" field, or closest to it.

Boxed note: "Traumfigur halten" (keep the dream figure).

3. Game Principle

By placing cards (meals) on the plate in the middle of the game board, the next player clockwise is asked to eat the meal. He must decide whether to take in the (possibly concentrated) calorie load:

  • eat it ("zu sich nimmt"). The total calorie count is added up to determine the change in the player's figure. The eaten cards are placed aside, face down.

Boxed note: "Essen" and (possibly) "Zunehmen" (eat, and gain weight).

    or

  • defuse it ("entschärft") by playing a reduction card. The instruction on that card is followed, and the used cards are placed aside. If the player plays "Nein, eß ich nicht", the dish is passed on.

Boxed note: calories are defused, and the player either gains less, keeps the weight, loses weight, or passes the dish on.

    or

  • enlarge it by adding permitted calorie values and passing it on to the next player.

Boxed note: add calories and pass it on.

Boxed note at the top: "Serve dishes to the left-hand neighbour, or be served dishes by the right-hand neighbour."

4. Game Setup

  • The red chips, and the special cards marked with the circled S symbol, are removed. The card "Tischlein deck dich" is the exception and stays in the game. (Boxed note: remove the red chips and 4 special cards.)
  • If only 3 players play, the following cards are also removed (boxed note: 18 further cards removed):
    • 1 × Müsli
    • 2 × Fast Food
    • 2 × Fertiggericht (ready-made meal)
    • 3 × Hauptgericht (main course), one each of 600er Torte, 700er Fisch, 1000er Fleisch
    • 3 × Beilagen (side dish), one each of Sahne, Knödel, Kartoffeln
    • 1 × Nulldiät
    • 1 × FdH
    • 2 × Körnerkur
    • 1 × Abführpille
    • 2 × Nein, eß ich nicht
  • Each player receives a weight table.
  • Each player chooses a token and places it on the "Traumfigur" field. (Boxed note: choose a token, place it on Traumfigur.)
  • The cards are shuffled and dealt out completely. Except with 4 players, not everyone receives the same number of cards. Since usually several rounds are needed until a winner is determined, and the cards are shuffled and dealt again by a different player each time, this apparent unfairness evens out. (Boxed note: deal the cards; with 4 players not everyone has the same number of cards.)
  • The player holding the card "Tischlein deck' Dich" begins and places this card on the plate. The others follow clockwise. (Boxed note: "Tischlein deck' Dich" = starting player. The others follow clockwise.)

5. Course of Play

  • The starting player serves a dish (with or without side dish(es)). He places the card(s) on the plate in the middle of the game board. (Boxed note: main course (+ side dish(es)), fast food or ready-made meal(s).)
  • The next player decides whether he eats the dish:
    • without a reduction card, eats it; or
    • with a reduction card, eats it; or
    • by adding one or more side dishes, passes it on; or
    • by adding a "Nein, eß ich nicht" card, passes it on.
  • If the dish is eaten quite normally, the total calorie value is determined by addition. (Boxed note: determine the total calorie value.)
    • For a main course, the value on the card is multiplied by the number of side dishes. Any muesli calories present are also taken into account in the addition.
    • The weight table then shows by how many positions the eater's token is moved on the game board.
  • If the dish is eaten with a reduction card, that card decides by how many positions (see weight table) the player moves forward or back on the game board.
  • In both cases the eaten ("verspeist") cards are removed. The eater then serves a new dish to his left-hand neighbour. (Boxed note: put the used cards aside and play out anew.)

6. End of a Round

The round ends when a player, after eating, can no longer play a new card. That is the case when he holds only side dishes, muesli or reduction cards. (Boxed note: the round ends when no main course, ready-made meal or fast food remains with the player who must play out; he cannot play out.)

Now all players must eat the dishes they still hold in their hands. Reduction cards and side dishes without a matching main course count for nothing. If several main courses of the same colour are present, the side dishes may be distributed over one of the main courses. (Boxed notes: add the calorie values on hand; distribute side dishes onto a matching main course; reduction cards and side dishes without a matching main course do not count.)

Example: The player still has the following cards in hand:

  • 600er Torte
  • 1200er Torte
  • 3 cream cards
  • 1 × Abführpille (no meaning!)
  • 1 × Körnerkur (no meaning!)

The 3 cream cards are multiplied by the 600er Torte (total 1,800 calories). The 1,800 calories are added to the 1,200 calories of the remaining torte, giving a total of 3,000 calories. The player therefore gains 2 (see weight table). Had he multiplied the 3 cream cards by the 1200er Torte, the calories to be counted would have been 3,600 + 600 = 4,200.

ACHTUNG (Attention)

If a player has passed on a dish with his last card, the round is not yet over. He must wait to see whether the other players likewise pass it on, by adding an allowed card and passing it back round to him. He must then eat it. Only when he can no longer play out is the round over.

Boxed note: if a player has no card left, the round is not yet over; it ends only when a player can no longer play out.

When the calorie total of every player has been calculated and the figures have been moved accordingly, the player seated to the left of the dealer shuffles the cards anew and deals them out. A new round begins.

Boxed note: move the tokens accordingly; a new round begins.

7. End of the Game

The game ends when a player has become "Suppenkasper" or "Dicker Brocken". (Boxed note: the game ends when a player becomes Suppenkasper or Dicker Brocken.)

The cards still in hand are NOT counted.

The winner is the player who stands on the "Traumfigur" field, or is closest to it. If several players have a dream figure to show, or are equally close, there are several winners.

8. Variant 1 (Spielvariante 1)

The four special cards are dealt out along with the other cards. (Boxed note: the four special cards are shuffled in.)

  • The player who still holds the "Freßsack" card at the end of the game must consume the ready-made meals of all players. This card can be got rid of during the game by placing it on a ready-made meal and then eating that meal at its normal calorie value.
  • The card "Mecker-Ziege" has the same function, but applies to fast food dishes. (Boxed note: "Mecker-Ziege" applies only to fast food.)
  • The card "Naschkatze" has the same function, but applies to cakes and cream side dishes. (Cream may be distributed freely over the cakes.) (Boxed note: "Naschkatze" applies only to cakes and cream.)
  • The card "Suppenkasper" may be placed on any dish, and makes the corresponding player lose "3" on the spot. The calories present are not counted. (Boxed note: "Suppenkasper" fits all dishes: lose 3 points; calories are not counted.)

If this card remains in hand until the end of the game, no dish is counted any more. All players lose weight for their "Nein, eß ich nicht" and "Abführpille" cards. (Boxed note: at the end of the round only the "Nein, eß ich nicht" and "Abführpille" cards count.)

9. Variant 2 (Spielvariante 2)

The four special cards are shuffled in and dealt out.

Each player receives three chips.

At the start of a round, each player, in turn order, may choose, in exchange for surrendering one chip, one of three options. (Boxed note: 3 options at the start of a round.)

  • a) he immediately loses "3"; or
  • b) he deals 3 arbitrary cards to 3 different other players; or
  • c) he demands 3 reduction cards from 3 different other players.

Boxed note: lose 3 points; give 3 cards to 3 players; demand 3 reduction cards from 3 players.

If one of the players asked has no reduction card, the card may be demanded from another player instead.

Cards that have been received may be passed on.

If there are several winners at the end of the game, the winner is the player with the most chips. (Boxed note: if several players win, the number of chips decides.)
