Game board, 6 game pieces, 36 Finland maps (6 different colours), 400 cards and a die.
Goal of the Game
Suomi Tietopeli is a quiz game in which you answer questions from six different subject areas. Players travel around the board's route and always answer a question in the subject area of the square their game piece is on.
The goal is to collect six Finland maps of different colours – one from each subject area – by answering the cards' questions correctly. After that, a player must reach the goal square in the centre of the board, where answering the final question correctly wins the whole game.
Question Cards
The questions are divided into six subject areas: History, Culture, Natural Science, Geography, Sports and General Knowledge. Each card contains one question from each subject area.
The colours of the circles in front of the questions match the colours of the board squares and tell the player which subject area the question belongs to (Figure 2). The correct answer is on the back of the card.
Before playing, the players should agree how exact the answers must be – for example, whether a surname alone is enough when a name is asked for, and how precisely years and measurements must be known.
Setup
Shuffle the question cards and place them face up on the table in four piles with the question side upward. Each player chooses a game piece and places it on the Finland square of their choice; these are in the corners of the board (Figure 1). More than one player may start from the same Finland square.
Roll the die; the player who rolls the highest number begins. After that, the turn always passes clockwise.
Gameplay
On your turn, roll the die and move your game piece forward as many squares as the die shows. You may choose which direction you travel around the board's route. The square you stop on tells you the subject area of the question you will be asked (Figure 2). If you are on a Finland square, you may choose the subject area of the question yourself.
The player on your left draws a card from the table and reads the question aloud to you.
- If you answer incorrectly or do not know the answer, your turn is over and the turn passes to the next player.
- If you answer correctly, you take the Finland map of the subject area's colour and place it on the table in front of you. After that, the turn passes to the next player.
- If you answer correctly a question in a subject area for which you already have a Finland map, you may roll the die again. You can therefore have only one Finland map of each colour. You may continue your turn for as long as you keep answering correctly. When you answer incorrectly, the turn passes to the next player.
Goal Square
Once you have collected all six Finland maps of different colours, head towards the Finland square of your choice. You do not need to land on it with an exact number.
Once you have reached a Finland square, on your next turn you may begin your progress towards the goal square (Figure 3). The route to the goal square consists of two question squares. You no longer need the die; instead, to advance you must answer correctly the questions of the subject areas shown by the squares.
- If you answer correctly, you may move your game piece to the next square and, on your next turn, answer a question in the subject area that square shows.
Winning the Game
After answering both question squares correctly, you may move your game piece to the goal square (Figure 3). On your next turn, you answer one question, whose subject area is chosen by the player sitting on your left. The subject area must be chosen without looking at the questions in advance.
- If you answer correctly, you are the winner of the game.
- If you answer incorrectly, your game piece stays where it is, and on your next turn you answer a question in the subject area chosen by the player sitting on your left.
Variants
-
Use only the outer ring of the board, where each correct answer gives you a Finland map. The game ends when all the maps have been collected. The winner is the player who has collected the most maps.
-
Play with question cards only. You win the question card(s) for yourself if you answer correctly. The winner is the player who has collected the most cards in an agreed time.
-
The game may also be played so that on the board you may move only clockwise.
-
Suomi Tietopeli may also be played in teams. Agree whether one team member answers on each turn in turn, or whether the team may discuss the answers among themselves.
