Goal of the Game
In "Sugi", players take the role of an ancient spirit trying to guide their favourite samurai descendants to the Temple through the forest of Sugi.
Initial Preparations
You must place the Start and End Tiles face up on the table. Then, you must shuffle the Forest Tiles and place them face down, forming a grid of 3x4 tiles, in between the Start and End tiles.
Place the 5 Meeples on the Start Tile and the Ghost in the Temple.
Each player gets a Family Tree card at random.
You must shuffle the Movement Cards and give 4 to each player, leaving the rest aside, forming the draw deck.
The initial player is chosen at random.
How to Play
1- Planification Phase
Respecting the turn order, each player must play a card as an Action or place the Card in the TIMELINE:
A) To play a Card in the TIMELINE, it must be placed face down on the right of the last card on the table, if there's one. The arrows on the Cards won't be resolved until Phase 2 (Resolution Phase, see later).
You can place the Card oriented in any direction, so the arrow moves the samurai in any direction you like best. (The Cards will be revealed horizontally, like a book).
B) To play an Action, you discard the card and perform the effect established by the icon:
- Rotate Tile or Card: Rotate any Forest or TIMELINE Card 90° or 180° in any direction, it doesn't matter if it's occupied.
- Place free Card: Place immediately a card from your hand anywhere on the TIMELINE. Then draw a card from the Draw Deck.
- Ghost: Move the ghost. (See later).
- Remove Card: Take any Card from the TIMELINE and place it at the bottom of the Draw Deck, without watching it.
This phase ends when all players use all their hand cards or there's 5 cards in the TIMELINE for 2 or 3 players or 6 TIMELINE cards for 4 or 5 players.
2- Resolution Phase
The player who played the last TIMELINE card is the ne who must turn HORIZONTALLY the cards from left to right and one by one to resolve te movements indicated by the arrows, if its possible. If there are two arrows in the card, you must resolve them just the same: from left to right and from top to bottom.
When a samurai moves towards a faced down tile, it turns up revealing the path and showing if the samurai can move to it. If the samurai can't move, he stays still and the tile remains faced up.
Samurai can't move:
- out of the board.
- through an obstacle.
- to the tile where the Ghost is.
- after arriving to the Temple.
3- Maintenance Phase
During this phase all players may discard any number of cards from their hands and then draw up to 4 cards from the Draw Pile and it's back to Phase 1, starting with the next player following the order of turn.
When the Draw Deck is finished, you must shuffle the discarded cards and form a new Draw Deck.
The Ghost
One of the spirits of the forest is neutral and can be moved and used by all players to block the path or chase the samurai.
The Ghost can move in a straight line any number of tiles. When the Ghost enters a tile in wich there's at least one samurai, the player must move it to a tile nearby one by one.
The samurai must move following the same conditions as in the Resolution Phase and in a different direction as the Ghost.
If a samurai can't move anywhere, the Ghost must go back a tile in the direction it came from.
Once the Ghost leaves the Temple tile, it can't go back to that tile.
End of the Game
The game ends instantly when there are three samurai in the Temple Tile, without resolving any more actions or movements.
To decide the winner, you must count the points on each player's Family Tree Card. In case of a tie, the winner is the player whose samurai with the most points was the first who arrived in the Temple.
