The Game in Brief

A Sudoku is a grid of 9x9 squares where some squares have a given number at the start of the game. The players' task is to fill in the empty squares using the numbers 1–9. Each row, horizontal and vertical, must contain the numbers 1–9. Each region, a 3x3 square, must also contain the numbers 1–9. The tricky part is that none of the numbers may appear more than once in a row or region! A turn may take at most 30 seconds, and each correctly placed number gives the player that many points. The highest score in the same colour wins when the round is over or the Sudoku is solved. The more numbers given at the start, the easier the Sudoku is to solve – but there is only one correct solution!

Preparations

Shuffle the Sudoku cards and draw the top card. Write the numbers from the card onto the game board. Use the BLACK marker pen for the given numbers. Afterwards, check that the numbers are in the same squares that the card shows. Place the sand timer where everyone can reach it. Give one marker pen to each player.

Starting the Game!

The player who filled in the black numbers on the board takes the first turn. The player turns the sand timer over and now has 30 seconds to write a number between 1 and 9 in any empty square.

Tactical Tip!

Start looking at rows or 3x3 squares that lack high numbers. If you find, for example, the correct square for the number 9, you score nine points on your first turn!

The following paragraph is printed in the sheet's column after the Tactical Tip; it describes passing the turn.

When time is up, the Sudoku is passed to the player seated to the left. This player turns the sand timer back over and tries to work out which number he or she can write in with a colour pen. After 30 seconds the turn is ended (whether or not the player has placed a number), and the board passes to the next player in turn.

Correction

A player may challenge the placement of the number that another player writes in their turn. If the number proves to be misplaced, it is wiped off the board, and the player who wrote the number must end their turn and pass the Sudoku to the next player in turn.

A misplaced number quickly causes new errors. It may take several turns before the players notice that they have got stuck. In the best case, one can wipe off the misplaced numbers and go back the same number of turns. Sometimes it is easier to start over from the beginning.

The Game Is Over

A round of Sudoku can end in four ways:

  • When all the empty squares have been filled in.
  • When all players have had three attempts each, without anyone managing to add more numbers.
  • When the agreed playing time is up.
  • When all players agree to give up.

Scoring

Each player adds together the numbers they have written in with their colour pen. The sum is the player's final score for the round. The player with the highest score wins!

Note!

Use only marker pens of the type included with the game. Felt-tip pens and pens with permanent ink can damage the board's wipe-off surface.
