Game Ingredients

106 Eggo cards and 7 character cards. Ages 14+. 2-6 players.

Setup

  1. Separate the seven character cards from the Eggo cards.
  2. Choose a character: Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Eleven, or Hopper. Barb is a bonus character (see below).
    • Bonus character: Barb. Ditch one of the other characters to play as Barb. Oh, wait—both sides of her card are in the Upside Down. Looks like she's stuck there forever...poor Barb.
    • Place any characters that weren't chosen to the side; they aren't used during the game.
  3. Next, place your character card in front of you. One side of the card is the Right Side Up, the other is the Upside Down. Ensure the Upside Down is faceup to begin with.
  4. Remove the four Demogorgon cards from the deck of Eggo cards and place them to the side.
  5. Shuffle the remaining Eggo cards, then take the top card and place it faceup in front of the cardboard toaster. If the card doesn't have a human character on it, place it back into the deck randomly and draw cards until you draw one with a human character, then place that card in front of the cardboard toaster. This is the discard pile.
  6. Next, deal four cards facedown to each player.
    • Note: You can look at your cards, but keep them secret!
  7. Now, place the four Demogorgon cards evenly throughout the deck of Eggo cards, then shuffle again.
  8. Split the reshuffled deck into two roughly equal decks, then place one deck in each of the slots on top of the cardboard toaster, facing away from all players. These are the draw decks. (It doesn't matter which deck goes in which slot, just be sure that the cards are from all players!)

How to Play

The player born furthest from 1983 goes first. Play continues to the left.

On Your Turn

  1. Play a card from your hand by placing it faceup on the discard pile. You can only play a card if it matches the color or the character on the top card of the discard pile. Then end your turn.
    • Note: If you have a card you can play, you must play it, even if you might not want to!
    • Example: This is the top card of the discard pile. It's a red Dustin. This is your hand. You can play either the red Joyce card or the green Dustin card.
  2. If you can't match the character or color on the top card of the discard pile, you must take the next card from the draw deck of your choice. If you now have a match, you must play that card and then end your turn.
    • Example: This is the top card of the discard pile. It's a yellow Mike. This is your hand. You can't match any colors or characters. You draw a green Nancy card from a draw deck and add it to your hand because you still have no match. You draw a second card from a draw deck, and it's a yellow Dustin—you've finally got a match! Place the yellow Dustin card on the discard pile and then end your turn.
  3. If you still don't have a match, take the next card from the draw deck of your choice. If you can play that card, you must play it. Either way, even if you can't play it, end your turn.
  4. If you draw a Demogorgon card, see SPECIAL CARDS.

Remember: If you can't play a card, you can take up to two cards from the draw decks on your turn. But if you can play a card, you must do so, and that ends your turn.

Special Cards

Demogorgon

If you draw this card, place it faceup next to the cardboard toaster—don't play it or add it to your hand. If it was the first card you took from a draw deck, draw again, then end your turn. If it was the second card drawn, just end your turn. There are four Demogorgon cards in the Eggo deck, and once all four Demogorgon cards are drawn, the game ends! (See HOW TO SURVIVE!)

Reverse

This card reverses the order of play, so the previous player goes again, and play continues in that direction. You can only play this card if it matches the color of the top card on the discard pile. There are eight Reverse cards in the deck.

Draw 2

When you play this card, the next player must take the top two cards from either draw deck before taking their normal turn. You can only play this card if it matches the color of the top card on the discard pile. There are eight Draw 2 cards in the deck.

Portal

This card causes you to turn over your character card. If you were Right Side Up, you now flip your card to the Upside Down, and vice versa. This card doesn't match a color or a character, so you can play it anytime you want to. After you play it, choose a color and announce it, so the next player knows what to play against (you can choose any color). There are eight Portal cards in the deck.

All-Players Rift

This card causes everyone—including you—to turn over their character cards. Those players who were Right Side Up are now in the Upside Down, and vice versa. This card doesn't match a color or a character, so you can play it anytime you want to. However, if you can't play a card but are holding one of these cards, you must play it! After you play it, choose a color and announce it, so the next player knows what to play against (you can choose any color). There are six All-Players Rift cards in the deck.

IMPORTANT: If you play your last card while you are in the Upside Down, or your last card flips you to the Upside Down, you haven't escaped yet! You must continue to draw cards and keep playing as usual, until you can get rid of your last card while you are flipped to the Right Side Up. Also, if you are flipped to the Right Side Up when the Demogorgon attacks but you still have cards, at least they will find your body, unlike Barb's…

Note: The other players keep playing even after the first person escapes and gets rid of all their cards! Now it's time to see who else gets to escape—two people might survive, everyone might survive…or (gulp) sometimes no one will escape the Demogorgon!

How to Survive!

Once all four Demogorgon cards have been drawn, it means the monster has attacked, and the game is over.

To survive, players must complete two tasks before the fourth Demogorgon card is drawn:

  1. Escape from the Upside Down (by turning their character card Right Side Up).
  2. Get rid of all their Eggo cards (by placing them faceup on the discard pile).

You must complete both of these tasks before the Demogorgon attacks. If you do, you are safe and can watch to see who else survives!

Anyone who doesn't complete both tasks before the Demogorgon attacks is now trapped in the Upside Down, and is destined to be eaten by the hungry monster!

Survive and you win. Get trapped and, well, hope you enjoy the Upside Down. Good luck!
