Components and Setup

You can use this mini-expansion with the base game and with all other expansions. Set up the game as usual.

16 bonus tiles. The front of each tile shows 2 bonuses:

  • Top bonus: the winner's bonus.
  • Bottom bonus: the other players' bonus.

The back of each tile shows a resource type (wood, brick, stone or gold) and a VP symbol for final scoring.

Shuffle all 16 tiles and place them face down in a stack next to the game board.

1 mammoth herd token. Insert the token into its stand and place it next to the stack.

You can now start the game.

Game Flow

The game flow does not change, except as follows.

Start of Round

At the start of each round, the first player places the mammoth token in the resource area shown on the top bonus tile. For example, if the tile shows a brick, the player places the token in the clay pit.

The player then places this tile face up next to the stack. (The resource shown on the new tile has no significance for the current round.)

If there are no bonus tiles left in the stack, the whole herd has been tamed. In that case, remove the mammoth token from the game and continue playing by the normal rules.

Sending People to Tame a Mammoth

You place your people as usual. Only during the action phase does the mammoth token become important.

When you place people on a location with a resource where the mammoth token is, you roll the dice and receive resources as usual. Immediately after this, you may move one or more of these people from this location to the bonus tile that was turned face up at the start of the round. With these people you can later try to tame a mammoth to get its help in developing your village.

  • You may move people only from this resource area.
  • You must immediately give 1 food for each person you moved to the bonus tile. As with feeding, you may replace 1 food with 1 resource.
  • People who were not moved to the bonus tile return to your player board.

After all players have completed all actions of their people, but before the feeding phase, they may tame 1 mammoth from the herd.

Example: The mammoth token is placed in the clay pit. Red has three people there. After rolling the dice to receive bricks, Red decides to move two people to the bonus tile and gives 2 food. The third person returns to Red's player board.

Taming a Mammoth

All players who moved people to the bonus tile roll dice. Each player rolls as many dice as they have people at that tile. All players roll simultaneously.

Players then compare the highest value of one of their dice. Values of several dice are not added together, and tools cannot be used.

  • The player with the highest die value wins and receives the top reward. Instead of the top reward, the winner may choose to take the bottom reward.
  • Losing players receive the bottom reward.
  • The winner then takes the tile and places it face down in front of them.
  • The 10-point icon (shown in the printed rules as an image) means the player receives nothing for it. It serves as a reminder during final scoring.

If the highest values are equal, players compare their next-highest die values, and so on.

If, after comparing all results, there is a tie and no winner, then all players who sent people to tame receive the bottom reward, and the tile is removed from the game.

If nobody placed people at the bonus tile, nobody receives a reward, and the tile is also removed from the game.

After taming a mammoth, players return their people pieces to their player boards and feed them as usual.

Example: Red sent 2 people to tame a mammoth and rolls 2 dice. Blue also sent 2 people and rolls 2 dice. Yellow has 1 person and rolls 1 die. [Dice faces are shown as images in the printed rules and are not reproduced here.] The highest value is shown on one die. Because the values of Red and Yellow match, they compare the next-highest value. Red has a die with the next value, while Yellow has no dice left. Red wins and receives the top reward, a tool. The others receive the bottom reward, 3 VP. Then Red takes the tile and places it face down in front of Red.

End of Game

Before scoring the civilization cards, the mammoth points are counted. The player with the most bonus tiles receives 10 points. If there is a tie, all tied players receive 10 points each.

Changes for 2–3 Players

In a location where the mammoth token is placed, all players may place their people. The usual 2- or 3-player limit on placing people does not apply there. The limit of 7 people still applies.

Reward Descriptions

You have probably already seen the symbols on the bonus tiles. This description serves as a reminder:

  • Advance 1 step on the farming track.
  • Get or upgrade 1 tool.
  • Get 1 person from the supply.
  • Get the specified resource. The example shows 2 bricks.
  • Get 1 resource of your choice.
  • Get the specified number of VP.
  • Take the top civilization card from the stack and place it face down next to your other civilization cards, without receiving its top bonus. You use this card only during final scoring.
