Game Components
Beautiful game board made of solid oiled beech, displaying a four hex grid; 6x19 colorful maple stones in a big cotton bag.
Set Up
(The source prints this heading as "Sep up".)
The empty board is placed in the middle and players choose colors.
Distribution of stones:
- 2 players: each player chooses 3 colors
- 3 players: each player chooses 2 colors
- 4-6 players: each player chooses 1 color
Each player places a stone for each of his colors in front of him, so that everybody can have a look at them. One stone of each unassigned color is removed and put back in the game box.
All remaining 18 stones for each color (included unassigned colors) are placed inside the cloth bag.
Game Goal
'Stein im Brett' consists of three rounds. At the end of each round, all stones without same-colored neighboring stones score points. After the third round, the player with the most victory points is the winner.
Scoring example (from the rulebook diagram): the red and black stones (lower row, leftmost position) have no same-colored adjacent stones and, therefore, score victory points. Green and white stones don't score. The two rightmost red stones don't score either.
Game Play
Starting player. First, the starting player is determined: a stone is drawn from the cloth bag and the player who owns that stone's color is the starting player. If the color is unassigned, another stone must be drawn.
First round. The starting player draws three stones from the bag and places them on any three free board fields - avoiding to place stones of his color(s) in adjacent positions, if possible. Then, it's the second player's turn. Play proceeds in clockwise direction.
Scoring. After all board fields have been used, the round ends and scores must be computed. For this, each player removes from the board all his stones without adjacent, same-colored stones, and places them in front of him. They represent his victory points.
All other stones are placed back in the box. They are now out of the game!
Next round. Only those stones still inside the bag are used to continue playing the game. The starting player changes by one position (with 2-4 players) or two positions (5-6 players) clockwise before the 2nd and 3rd rounds begin.
Game end. At the end of the 3rd round the cloth bag is empty and the 3rd scoring takes place. The winner is the player with the most victory points when adding all three partial scorings. In case of a tie, there's a tie... or another game can immediately be played.
