Rules for the Game of "The Race" (Steeple Chase)
The players having fixed upon the wager for the course, and arranged the order of starting, will select the horses and place them in order, with the fore-feet resting on the line marked O.
Each player will commence the game by casting the die in his turn, and bringing his horse on the line indicated by the number of points obtained by the cast; he who attains or exceeds the number of 86 is the winner. When the points indicated by the die lead the horse on one of the lines corresponding with the tens, or any number where the fences may be placed, he cannot stop there, but must return to his former number, and be called refusing a leap, thus losing a move, which adds much to the excitement of the game; this does not apply to the number 86 which is the winning post of the game.
The one who arrives at the winning post first takes the pool minus the stake for the second horse; thus after a player has won the pool, the others play on to claim the second horse. All those who have not arrived at No. 70 will owe the winner half the stake (unless otherwise arranged), and be called distanced, with a penalty of half the amount of the stake to be put to the next pool.
These rules may be modified according to the will of the players who can themselves establish their own rules.
