Under tournament rules you declare the direction first, then check whether it can be done. If any legal placement in that direction exists you must complete it; if none does, you may choose a different action, including a roll or boost the other way. The original rulebook lets you measure to see if a barrel roll fits without forcing you to roll, and players disagree about how that squares with the stricter tournament wording. Boost fails if blocked in the declared direction.
