What do the letters on the red and blue target lock tokens mean?

They pair a lock with its owner: the blue token with a given letter goes next to the locking ship and the red token with the same letter goes next to the targeted ship. Matching letters let several locks be tracked at once, and a lock can only be spent against the ship holding the matching red token.
