If two ships of equal pilot skill fire at each other, can the destroyed one still shoot back, and when is a destroyed ship removed?
The core rulebook states this directly, and forum replies agree.

Yes. A ship destroyed by an attack from a ship of the same pilot skill stays in play, keeping its Damage cards, until it has had its own attack; a destroyed ship of lower pilot skill is removed at once. The initiative player resolves first, and the first attack, effects included, resolves before the return shot. A faceup crit dealt to the destroyed ship takes effect immediately and can affect its return shot. Once the destroyed ship has fired it is removed immediately, so it gets no free action afterwards, while the first attacker's after-attack effects still happen.
