Can I attempt a job and also encounter a contact or card in the same turn?
The rulebook says you resolve a single encounter per turn.

No. The encounter step allows one encounter: a patrol, your space's card, a contact, or an Encounter-labeled ability or job. Each of these uses up your single encounter.
