How do Rebel allies activate, and do they cost a hero's activation?

An ally is its own group with its own Deployment card, so it does not use a hero's activation token. When the Rebels' turn comes they choose either a hero or a ready ally, and exhaust the ally's card afterwards; allies can attack only once and cannot rest or open crates.
