Table of Contents
Components
- 1 die with 3 attributes: Shape, Color, Number
- 3 stink bugs
- 1 game board
- 24 colorful bugs
Note: the source's component list does not name a spinner, but the rules refer to a spinner ("wheel" / wheel pointer) at every level. The spinner is referred to as the source states.
Before the first game, remove the bugs and apply the stickers to the die.
Object
All the colorful bugs love to play under the rug. Before the 3 stink bugs land on top of the game board, help all the colorful bugs get snug under the rug. In other words, the object of the game is to get all the colorful bugs underneath the game board before the 3 stink bugs are on top of the game board.
Game End
- If all colorful bugs have reached the underside of the game board before the 3 stink bugs land on the game board, the players win.
- If, when the 3 stink bugs have landed on the game board, any colorful bugs are still on the game board, the players lose.
Set Up
Open the game board. Place all the colorful bugs randomly on the game board. Set the 3 stink bugs and the die aside.
Focus on 1!
Level 1 - Ages 3-4
How to play
Roll the die once, then set it aside until the end of the game. Whichever face is showing, all players play by that face for the whole game. For teaching purposes, suppose the Color face is rolled; then all players play by color for this game.
Players take turns. On your turn, spin the spinner, then find a colorful bug of the color the spinner indicates. When you find one, pick it up and slide it underneath the game board. If you cannot find a bug of the matching color, you may ask the other players for help. This is a cooperative game, and cooperation is part of the fun! Now it is the next player's turn. The next player spins the spinner, finds a bug of the matching color, and slides it underneath the game board. Continue taking turns, finding bugs of the matching color, until the first time no one can find a bug matching the color the spinner shows, place one stink bug on the game board. Uh-oh, hold your breath, because the stink starts now! From this point on, all players stop looking for bugs of the matching color. From now on, you only need to pay attention to the bugs' eyes. Keep taking turns spinning the spinner, and based on the spinner's stopping position, find a bug with the matching big eyes or small eyes. If you cannot find a bug with the exact matching eyes, place another stink bug on the game board.
Continue playing until all the colorful bugs have reached the underside of the game board, or all three stink bugs are on the game board.
Roll and Spin!
Level 2 - Ages 4-5
How to play
In Level 2, you roll the die on every turn. On your turn, roll the die and note the face showing. Then spin the spinner, and match what the spinner's ring points to with the face showing on the die. For example, if you rolled the Number face showing a one, look at the number the spinner's ring points to. Find a bug whose back shows the matching number of shapes, pick it up, and slide it underneath the game board. Now it is the next player's turn. Roll the die, spin the spinner, find a matching bug, and slide it underneath the game board.
Play continues. As in Level 1, the first time no one finds a matching bug, you must place a stink bug on the game board. Now move the die out of the game. Keep your eyes open: on your turn, spin the spinner and find only a bug with the matching big eyes or small eyes. Continue playing until all the colorful bugs have reached the underside of the game board, or all three stink bugs are on the game board.
Match 2!
Level 3 - Ages 5-6
How to play
Level 3 is the challenge! In Level 3 the die is not used. On your turn, spin the spinner, then find 2 bugs that match the 2 features shown on the spinner's ring. The source refers to a figure for this example, which is not included in the file. The example features given in the text are that a player may match two features such as: yellow with one spot (any shape); circle (any number); or big eyes.
As in Levels 1 and 2, find a matching bug, pick it up, and slide it underneath the game board. If no matching bug can be found at this point, place a stink bug on the game board, and from then on pay attention only to the bugs' eyes. Continue playing until all the colorful bugs have reached the underside of the game board, or all three stink bugs are on the game board.
