Components
A deck of 18 cards containing:
- 1 scenario description card
- 1 new Locomotive
- 7 new Canal track cards
- 1 new action space card
- 8 new Station cards
1 rulebook
Playing This Scenario
Play follows the base game (Mount Snowdon), with the following changes:
- Daffodil collection, for scoring at the end of the game.
- Canal filling, in addition to excavating rubble.
- Stone-breaking, which creates rubble for use in the work.
Daffodil Line Card Effect Modifiers
- Contract card 3: treat it as if it said: "...from the next valid site you may collect all the rubble or completely fill it." This allows you to completely fill a Canal track card with rubble.
- Contract cards 26 and 30: treat them as if they said: "...take and/or place twice as many rubble cubes."
- No. 1 L.A.D.A.S locomotive: allows you to place two extra rubble cubes on Canal track cards, and its base game ability also applies.
- No. 8 Snowplow: allows you to place one extra rubble cube on Canal track cards, and its base game ability also applies.
Note: for the cards above, you must have rubble cubes in your personal supply if you want to place them on a Canal track card.
Setup
- Place Station 1 (Ledbury) on top of Llanberis. Set up the other 7 Stations as in the base game.
- Shuffle the base game's Track cards and, choosing randomly in the appropriate numbers, place them in front of Skew Bridge, Dymock and Gloucester. Place the appropriate number of rubble on these cards and on the Station spaces marked with a shovel.
- Shuffle the Daffodil Line Canal track cards and place them among the other Stations in the appropriate number. Do NOT place rubble on the Canal track cards.
- Set the yellow markers aside. They are not used in this scenario. Instead, they are used as daffodils, which you collect during play.
- Place the new version of the Works action [C] on the board, with the side matching the number of players face up.
Gameplay
Daffodils
Some Station spaces and earthwork areas have daffodils printed on them. When you complete work on one of these spaces, you immediately take 1 yellow marker and put it into your personal supply. Daffodils are scored at the end of the game.
Gloucester: Daffodil Spaces (Trading Collected Daffodils)
If you want to build on one of these spaces, return the specified number of daffodils to the general supply and place your marker on the space.
Earthworks and Filling the Canal
For some Excavate actions, the player must place rubble from their personal supply onto a Track card. As usual, rubble must be removed from the Track cards that come from the base game.
The new Canal track cards start the game without rubble. Rubble must be placed on them before track can be laid on them.
If a player performs the Excavate action while on a Canal track card, then for each unit for which they would normally remove one cube, they must instead place one rubble from their personal supply onto the Canal track card. For this, the player must have usable rubble, and must carry out an Excavate action. If they have no more rubble cubes, their Excavate action ends immediately.
Each Canal track card has a number showing how much rubble is needed to fill the abandoned canal. The player who places the last piece of the required rubble completes the Canal track card and takes a yellow daffodil marker. Players may not lay track on a Canal track card until it has rubble equal to the number on the card. You may not place more rubble on a card than the number printed on it.
Events
When an Excavation event occurs, the Canal track card behaves like a normal card, but it must be filled with rubble from the general supply, per card, according to the Excavation Work Rate. It is possible that during an event or a player's excavation, the removal and placement of rubble must be mixed together.
At the Track-laying event, clear off any rubble already collected there, or add enough rubble to the canal to fill it, then turn it over as in the base game.
Works
The Works action [C] now has a third option: "stone-breaking". The player takes 1 Stone from their personal supply (puts it into the Supply Bag) and receives 2 Rubble from the general supply.
When choosing this action, the player may mix the action's 3 options in the appropriate way.
Scoring
At Station 7 (Over Junction), steel bar station spaces count toward the Track bonuses of Contract cards, but not toward their Building bonuses.
End of the Game
The Surveyor
If a player's Surveyor is on Station 3 (Dymock) or Station 7 (Over Junction) at the end of the game, that player takes 1 yellow marker from the general supply before scoring.
Scoring Daffodils
After the base game's scoring has been carried out, players score points for their daffodils. Points are awarded for groups of 4 daffodils (or partial groups): 3, 9, 19 and 34 points for 1, 2, 3 and 4 daffodils respectively. If a player has more than 4 daffodils, they form another group of four from them, and that group also scores. For example, for 6 daffodils the player scores 34 + 9 = 43 points.
Note: The yellow markers represent daffodils, and their number is not limited (though there should be enough). If they run out, replace them with some other yellow marker where possible.
New Locomotive
Utility Loco
Comes with one Coal. At the start of each round, its owner may pay one Coal to gain a temporary Labourer for that round.
Before Action A, and before other abilities or cards are resolved, its owner may choose a locomotive belonging to another player. The Utility Loco copies that locomotive for this round.
Note: If the Utility Loco is used to gain a temporary Labourer, the cost is always one Coal. Copying the Snowdon or the Prototype Engine does not give victory points, because the Utility Loco's effect lasts only until the end of the round, not until the end of the game.
