That Gem is now protected against all Action Card effects and Accidents.")
- Reaction Cards (purple) — e.g. Gimme a Hand Here ("Choose another Dwarf still in the mine who must mine two Gems. You may choose one of these Gems and place it on your Mine Cart. The miner must keep the remaining Gem, even if it is Obsidian. If both Gems mined are Obsidian, the miner takes one, and the other is returned to the Mine Bag."); So, It's Break Time ("When someone tries to force you to mine two Gems with the 'Gimme A Hand Here' Action Card, you may play this card to block that action.")

- Mine Bag — the black cloth bag holding all Gems.
Two Ways to Play
First decide which way you would like to play, a basic game or a more advanced game. For a basic game (when playing with younger children, for example) simply remove the Reaction Cards (purple) from the deck. For a more advanced game, shuffle the entire deck of Action Cards (with the Reaction Cards) together. You're ready for setup!
Setup
- Place the Main Game Board in the center of the table, with the Day Marker on the first Mining Day.
- Place the Pie Points and the Experience Tokens near the Main Game Board.
- Put all the Gems in the Mine Bag.
- Each player starts with one Chest Card (green), and one Mine Cart with its corresponding Dwarf Token. Pass these out randomly OR decide which Dwarf you will be based on your personality! Mine Carts should have the side with the Gem values and Dwarf character facing up. Chest Cards should have the turn action and Gem quantity side facing up.
- Shuffle all the Action Cards (for the basic game the purple Reaction Cards are removed and set aside). Deal five Action Cards to each player.
- Place the remaining deck of Action Cards to the left of the Main Game Board.
- Shuffle the Snow White Cards and place them to the right of the Main Game Board.
Playing the Game
A game consists of five days of work in the mine (5 game rounds).
To start each day, a Snow White Card is revealed and placed on the Main Game Board. On this card is a combination of Gems to be collected. The first Dwarf to leave the mine with this Gem combination, earns the bonus Pie Points. Each day of work in the mine ends when the last Dwarf leaves the mine.
The player with the longest beard goes first. If no one has a beard, then the shortest player goes first.
On Your Turn
Each turn a player may do one of these three things: Mine a Gem, Play an Action Card, or Leave the Mine.
Mine a Gem
When choosing to mine a Gem, simply reach into the Mine Bag and draw one Gem out and place it on your Mine Cart.
In the mine there are many valuable Gems as well as Obsidian. Obsidian is undesireable. Obtaining one is not so bad, but receiving a second will cause an Accident forcing you to leave the mine with nothing (see the Accidents section)!
Play an Action Card
A player may choose to play an Action Card for their turn. After a card is played and its effect resolved, the card is placed beside the Action Card deck, face up, forming a discard deck. Each of the Actions are spelled out specifically on the Action Cards.
Note: In the advanced game, Reaction Cards may be played out of turn to block the effects of some Action Cards.
Leave the Mine
When choosing to leave the mine as your action for the turn, flip over your Mine Cart indicating you are going back home to the cottage. All Gems on the cart are set aside until the end of the day when they are traded for Pie Points. Place your Dwarf Token on the appropriate space on the Main Game Board for when you Leave the Mine (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.) and collect the Bravery Bonus indicated on that space.
Players forced to leave the mine due to an Accident involving Obsidian place their Dwarf Token on the Main Game Board with the darkened side face up, and DO NOT collect the Bravery Bonus indicated on that space. (See the Bravery Bonus section.)
After leaving the mine, a Dwarf is not allowed to return to the mine (take any more turns) until the next day.
Remember: Players may do only one of these actions per turn. For example, if you choose to mine or play an Action Card, you can not leave the mine until your next turn. Also, the first player to Leave the Mine with the requested combination of Gemstones from Snow White earns the bonus Pie Points listed.
Accidents
Obsidian is worthless, undesirable and causes accidents for Dwarfs.
An Accident occurs when a player has a second Obsidian in their Mine Cart. When this happens, that player MUST leave the mine for the rest of the day (round). All Gems in their Mine Cart are returned to the Mine Bag (including Obsidian). Gems that are safe in the Chest or on the Gem, What Gem? Action Card do not need to be returned to the bag. The player places their Dwarf Token (dark side up) on the next available Leave the Mine space, but does not get to claim the Bravery Bonus.
Additionally: players that suffer an Accident receive an Experience Token. See the Experience Token section for details.
Bravery Bonus
A Bravery Bonus is collected by a player that chooses to leave the mine as their turn action. Their Dwarf Token is placed on the next available space for Leave the Mine (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) The Bravery Bonus to be collected is indicated on that space.
For example, if you are the third player to Leave the Mine, your Dwarf Token is placed on the 3rd space and you collect 1 Pie Point and draw an Action Card.
Experience Token
If a Dwarf suffers an Accident, they receive an Experience Token. This token may be discarded to remove an Obsidian from their Mine Cart on another day. The Obsidian removed from their cart by using the Experience Token is returned to the Mine Bag.
An Experience Token may be used by its owner at any time and does not count as an action.
For example, this token could be used to remove a second Obsidian, that would have otherwise caused an Accident.
Players may keep only one Experience Token at a time. It must be used before a new one can be gained. Any Experience Tokens remaining at the end of the 5th day are traded in for 3 Pie Points.
End of the Day
The workday continues with each Dwarf taking turns performing the action of their choice. Dwarfs who leave the mine as their turn action OR are forced to leave because of an Accident may not return to the mine until the next day.
The others keep on mining until there is only one Dwarf left in the mine.
The final Dwarf may continue mining until they choose to leave or suffer an Accident. An Accident results in losing both the Bravery Bonus AND everything in their Mine Cart. Choosing to leave results in collecting the final Bravery Bonus points and card. The last Dwarf out of the mine also mines first on the next day.
Now all players trade in their Gems for Pie Points. See the Trading in the Gems section for details on saving Gems in the chest and an explanation of bonus combinations.
Trading in the Gems
At the end of each day, Gems are traded to Snow White for Pie Points. Before trading their Gems, each Dwarf may save up to two Gems inside their chest. Flip the turn order card over to save Gems on your Chest Card. The Gems in the chest may not be used for bonus combinations. The rest of the Gems are traded for the amounts indicated on the Mine Cart.
Certain combinations of Gems are worth bonus points and are described below:
Remember: Each player can only use one of these bonuses per day, and may choose to use the Chest Card to save Gems for a better bonus on another day.
- When trading 3 Gems of the same type, a player may double the value of a second type of Gem they are trading in that round. Example: After trading 3 Topaz Gems (1 point each), a player trades 2 Sapphire Gems for 8 points each instead of 4 points each. {1+1+1} + {(4×2)+(4×2)} = 19, i.e. 3+8+8=19.
- When trading 4 Gems of the same type, a player may double the trading value of 2 other types of Gems they are trading in that round. Example: After trading 4 Emerald Gems (3 points each), a player trades 2 Sapphire Gems for 8 points each instead of 4 points each, AND 1 Topaz Gem for 2 points instead of 1. {3+3+3+3} + {(4×2)+(4×2)} + {1×2} = 30, i.e. 12+8+8+2=30.
- When trading 5 Gems that are each of a different type, a player receives an additional 8 points. {1+2+3+4+6} + 8 = 24, i.e. 16+8=24.
- When trading 6 Gems that are each of a different type, a player receives an additional 12 points. {1+2+3+4+6+8} + 12 = 36, i.e. 24+12=36.
Beginning the Next Day
At the beginning of each day, three things happen...
- Each player receives one Action Card.
- A new Snow White Card is revealed and placed on the Main Game Board.
- The Day Marker advances, moving to the next day.
Winning
At the end of the 5th day, all Gems are traded and the Pie Points are added up. The Dwarf with the most Pie Points is the winner!
NOTE: Action Cards remaining after the 5th Day are traded for an additional 1 Pie Point each, Reaction Cards and Experience Tokens remaining are traded for 3 Pie Points each.
Game Overview Reminder
- Each player gets 5 Action Cards each to start.
- The player with the longest beard (or the shortest player) goes first. Place the Day Marker on 1 and reveal a Snow White Card to begin.
- On your turn choose to do one of the following: Mine a Gem, Play an Action Card, or Leave the Mine. NOTE: The Reaction Cards are played during another player's turn to block an Action Card being played against you.
- When you get a second Obsidian, it causes an Accident and you must leave the mine until the next day. You return all Gemstones in your Mine Cart to the bag and do not receive any Bravery Bonus. However, you do get an Experience Token.
- The Chest Card may be used to protect and save Gems for another day.
- At the end of the day trade in the Gems in your Mine Cart for their respective Pie Point values (along with any possible bonuses).
- Start of a new day... give each player one Action Card, reveal a new Snow White Card, and advance the Day Marker by one.
