Setup

Randomly place 6 different colored cubes on each of the 6 grey starting spaces, one per space. Place the rest of the cubes in the draw bag.

In seating order, each player randomly draws a set [sic] of cubes according to the table below. The player then selects 2 cubes to return to the bag before passing the bag to the next player.

  • 3 Players: Draw 12 cubes, return 2 cubes.
  • 4 Players: Draw 10 cubes, return 2 cubes.
  • 5 Players: Draw 8 cubes, return 2 cubes.
  • 6 Players: Draw 7 cubes, return 2 cubes.

After all players have drawn their starting cubes, sort the remaining cubes from the bag into the 6 railroad boxes. Place 1 cube of each color in the '0' space on the score track. Begin the game.

Special Rules

Transcontinental Union

A transcontinental union is completed when one of the three starting companies on one coast connects to one of the three starting companies on the other coast. This is achieved by stacking a cube of a company from one coast on top of a cube of a company from the other coast. NOTE: This is the ONLY time two cubes may occupy the same city hex.

Both companies involved in the union receive a stock bonus.

  • The company that initiates the transcontinental union (i.e., the cube on top) receives a $4 stock price increase.
  • The other company involved in the union (i.e., the cube on bottom) receives a $2 stock price increase.

The game ends IMMEDIATELY after the stock price adjustments.

The Great Rivers

To build across a river, a company must pay ONE ADDITIONAL cube. This cube is removed from the game (place it in the DISCARD BOX).

The Great Mountains

To build in the mountains, a company must pay ONE ADDITIONAL cube for each mountain hex it enters. This cube is removed from the game (place it in the DISCARD BOX). Subsequent placements in mountain hexes do not cost an extra cube.

Game End

The game ends when five railroad boxes are empty at the end of a turn or when a transcontinental union is completed.

Map Key

The printed map key shows the following.

  • Scoring: hex values 1 (yellow), 2 (purple) and 3 (red).
  • Terrain Costs: a cost of "1" on a coloured terrain swatch, "discard 1" beside the river (blue) swatch, and "1 + discard 1 (1 cube)" on the mountain swatch.
