Game Components

  • 60 action cards
  • 36 resource cards
  • Person cards: 10 worker cards, 8 salesman cards, 5 investor cards
  • 1 headframe card

The 5 salesman cards that modify resource values can also be used in the board game Siberia (see Using the Salesman Cards in the Boardgame).

Preparation

Shuffle the resource cards and place them face down in a stack on the table. Then draw 8 cards and place them face down in a row beside the stack. Now place the headframe card beside the resource cards in a way that the arrow is directed towards the resource cards. The resources have to be extracted in this direction. Reveal the first three cards next to the headframe card.

Place the worker cards, salesman cards, and investor cards on the table in separate face-up stacks.

Each player gets 1 worker card that he places in front of him on the table.

Shuffle the action cards and place them face down in a stack. Each player draws 5 action cards.

Course of Action

Beginning with the youngest player, the turns are made in clockwise direction. Each player performs the following steps in the given order:

1. Discovering Resources

The player reveals one of the covered resource cards. If 3 or more cards are covered, the player must uncover a card. If only one or two cards are covered, he may reveal a card, but he is not obliged to do so.

2. Card Action

The player plays cards to perform an action (see Playing Cards). After that, the player draws one card from the stack of action cards.

Alternatively the player can pass on playing cards and instead draw up to two cards.

Cards on hand are limited to 8 cards. If a player has already 8 cards, he must play cards or skip. If a player has 7 cards, he must not draw more than one card.

Cards played off will be placed face up on a stack. If the stack of action cards is depleted, the cards played off are shuffled and placed face down as new stack.

Playing Cards

The action cards each show two elements: one resource and one person. Each card can be used for either a resource action or a person action.

To perform an action, a player normally plays two cards with the same symbol. To perform the "Worker" action, for example, a player plays two cards with the worker symbol. (Exception: A player has an investor card for a particular action; see Investor.)

If a player wants to perform a particular action, but has only one card with the symbol for this action, he can nevertheless perform this action by playing two more cards with any symbol (3 cards in total). It's important that always one card has to carry the symbol of the requested action. It's not allowed to perform an action with four cards without the requested symbol. The mandatory symbol can also be supplied by an investor (see Investor).

The Actions in Detail

Investor

The player plays two action cards with the investor symbol (or one investor action card and two others) to take one of the available investor cards. He chooses one of the investor cards in the stack and places it face up in front of him on the table.

Effect: To extract the resource mentioned on the investor card, the player no longer has to play two cards with that symbol, but only one card with that symbol – or two cards with other symbols.

Example: Stefan has the charcoal investor card. To perform the "charcoal extraction" action, he plays one (instead of two) charcoal cards and draws one new action card afterwards. In case Stefan had had no charcoal action card, he could nevertheless have performed the action by playing two other action cards.

Worker

The player plays two action cards with the worker symbol (or one worker action card and two others) to take one of the available worker cards and place it face up in front of him on the table.

Effect: The worker card affects the resource actions (see Resource Action). The number of worker cards marks how many resource cards can be extracted at most during a player's resource action.

Salesman

The player plays two action cards with the salesman symbol (or one salesman action card and two others) to take one of the available salesman cards and place it face up in front of him on the table.

Effect: Salesmen affect the scoring (see Scoring). By owning a salesman, a player can sell resources for a higher price than the price printed on the resource card. In addition, the worker, investor and salesman cards can be upvalued with salesman cards.

Resource Action

The player plays two action cards with the symbol for a certain resource (e.g. gold) (or one action card for the resource and two others). If the player has an investor for this resource, the investor replaces the first card. The player then needs only one more card for this resource or two other cards.

The player now may extract the resources. He must extract the resources in direction of the arrow on the headframe. According to the type of resource he wants to extract, he takes one resource card from the supply for each worker card he owns.

As each player has one worker card right from the start, each player is able to extract at least one resource card. When a player owns more than one worker card, he may extract more than one resource card per action if possible. Captured resources are placed face down next to the player. After extracting, the empty places of the resource supply are filled up with resource cards from the stack. The cards are placed face down.

Example: Klemens owns two workers. The resource supply contains 3 gold cards. Klemens chooses the "gold extraction" action by playing 2 cards with the gold symbol. Now he may take the gold cards with the values of 4000 and 3000, but not the card with the value 5000. Afterwards, he takes two cards from the stack of resource cards and fills up the supply by placing them face down on the empty places.

End of Game

The end of game is initiated by the last resource card being uncovered. Afterwards, each player has one more turn, including the player who uncovered the last resource card.

Scoring

The value of the captured resource cards and the owned person cards will be added up. The most prosperous player wins.

Resource Cards

The values of the resources are printed on the resource cards. These values will be added up unless a player owns a salesman for the given resource. The salesman modifies the value of a resource type. All captured resource cards of the respective type can be sold for the value stated on the salesman card (instead of the value printed on the resource card).

Example: Sylvie owns three charcoal cards with the values of 1000 $, 3000 $ and 4000 $. She also owns the charcoal salesman who modifies the value for charcoal to 5000 $. Her charcoal cards are worth 15,000 $ in total. Without the salesman, the cards would only be worth 8000 $ in total.

Person Cards

Each person card has a basic value of 1000 $. Salesmen can modify these values. The "worker" salesman card increases each worker card's value to 2000 $. The value of a salesman will be increased to 3000 $ and the value of an investor to 4000 $ with the accordant salesman.

Using the Salesman Cards in the Boardgame

The 5 salesman cards, which upvalue the resources, can also be used in the boardgame "Siberia". The rules of the boardgame will then be expanded by the following rule:

The salesman cards are placed next to the board.

If a player performs the salesman action, he may, instead of placing a pawn as a salesman at a stock exchange, alternatively take one of the salesman cards and place it in front of him on the table. Later on, he may sell the resources mentioned on the salesman card for a better price, e.g. gas for 4000 $ if he took the salesman card for gas.

First, players have to take the cards next to the board which are not yet taken by another player. If a player performs the action after all cards are already taken by players, he may also take away a salesman card from any other player.
