Components

  • 100 Shopping cards (including 21 Tompang cards)
  • 5 Character cards

We recommend sorting the Shopping cards into 10s for easy counting!

Game Setup

  1. Each player chooses their favourite character to place in front of them. We recommend starting with the Basic side, which has no special power. Once all players are familiar with the game, try out the Extra Kiasu side with unique player powers.
  2. Shuffle all the Shopping cards together to form a deck. Deal X + 1 cards face-up in a row, where X is the number of players in the game (e.g. in a 3-player game, deal 4 cards face-up). This is the Shopping Display.
  3. Decide on a starting player, preferably the last player to read a comic book. You are ready to shop until you drop!

Flow of the Game

The game takes place over 3 shopping days (rounds). Each shopping day, players will pick exactly 1 card from the Shopping Display to place in one of their 3 Shopping Bags. The shopping day ends when one player 'drops' (see Dropping below).

Flow of a Turn

Starting from the starting player and going clockwise, each player picks one Shopping card from the Shopping Display to place in one of their 3 bags (sides of your Character card). Once all players have picked one card from the Shopping Display, the turn ends.

Shopping Bag Rules

When a player picks a Shopping card from the Display, they may place it in any of the 3 slots on their character card.

Each Shopping Bag can contain either:

  • Up to 5 DIFFERENT coloured coupons of the same coupon value (e.g. all 30%).
  • Up to a total value of 100% in the SAME colour.

Players may rearrange Shopping cards in their Shopping Bags at any time. They may even rearrange their Shopping cards when they drop.

End of the Turn

When all players have picked and placed one card from the Shopping Display, the turn ends. Carry out the following 2 steps:

  1. Discard the last unpicked Shopping card to the discard pile. Deal a new Shopping Display equal to the number of players + 1. If the deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile to form a new deck.
  2. The player to the left of the starting player is the new starting player for the next turn.

Drawing Extra Cards

Some Shopping cards have a Draw Extra card icon. When a player places a card with any of these icons into their Shopping Bag, carry out the effect of the icon immediately. The icons are:

  • The player choosing this card draws an extra card immediately.
  • The player to the left of the player choosing this card draws an extra card immediately.
  • The player to the right of the player choosing this card draws an extra card immediately.

If the new card also has a Draw Extra card icon, carry out that effect immediately. Note that the player must place the Shopping card into a Bag to carry out the effect. If they are unable to place the Shopping card into one of their Bags, this immediately triggers the end of the Shopping Day (see End of the Shopping Day below) and the Draw Extra is not carried out.

Tompang Cards

Tompang cards are requests from Sabo Singh for you to obtain specific items for him. Think of them as shopping quests!

You gain 5 points if you succeed in obtaining the specific Shopping cards at the end of the 3 days, but lose 3 points if you do not. Shopping cards used for one Tompang may not be used for another.

Tompang cards are different from other Shopping cards as they are not placed in any of the 3 Shopping Bags, but placed below your Character card. Each player may only take a maximum of 2 Tompang cards in one shopping day. If they draw a 3rd Tompang on the same day, they 'drop'.

Dropping

A player 'drops' when one of the following 2 conditions occurs:

  1. They pick or draw a Shopping card that cannot be placed in any of their 3 Shopping Bags.
  2. They pick or draw a 3rd Tompang card on the same day.

The player who drops will have to drop one of their 3 Shopping Bags of their choice (see End of the Shopping Day below for more details).

The Shopping card or Tompang card that the player was not able to pick is discarded to the discard pile. Both the turn and shopping day immediately end. The remaining cards in the Shopping Display are discarded.

Example: Kiasee draws a Shopping card that can't be placed in any of his 3 Shopping Bags without one of the bags exceeding the Shopping Bag rules. Because of this, he drops and will have to discard one of his 3 Bags at the end of the day.

End of the Shopping Day

The shopping day (round) ends when one player drops (see Dropping above).

The player who dropped chooses one shopping bag and discards all the cards in it. They keep all contents from their remaining two bags as well as their Tompang cards. All other players set aside all Shopping cards and Tompang cards from their bags face-up in a scoring pile. If this is the end of the 3rd shopping day, proceed to End of the Game below. Otherwise, deal a new Shopping Display, rotate the starting player to the left, and start a new shopping day!

End of the Game and Scoring

The game ends when the 3rd shopping day is over. In the rare case that there are insufficient cards to form the Shopping Display, the game ends immediately.

All players now count points from their Shopping and Tompang cards.

  • All Shopping cards score points equal to their coupon values divided by 10 (e.g. a 20% Shopping card will score you 2 points).
  • All Tompang cards score 5 points if you have managed to pick up the stated Shopping cards amongst your 3 day stash. Remember that each Shopping card can only be used for one Tompang card! If you did not manage to pick up the Shopping cards that Sabo Singh wants, subtract 3 points for each Tompang card that is not fully satisfied.

Example: Mr Kiasu has the following Shopping cards. He scores 2+2+3+6+3+5+3+4+4 = 32 points from coupon values. He can only score one of his 2 Tompang cards, so he scores +5 -3 = 2 points from them. His shopping total is 34 points!

The player with the most points wins and is the Ultimate Kiasu Shopping Champion! In the case of a tie, the player with the least Shopping cards wins.
