Scenario: The Jungle

Components

Suitable for: base game and Seafarers expansion. Players: 3 or 4. Duration: about 60 minutes (base game).

Additional material:

  • 30 red discovery chips (the back of the storm flood chips)
  • 1 jungle hex

Setup

  • The board is set up by the normal rules, but initially without the jungle hex.
  • Once the board including the number tokens is set up, replace the pasture hex with the "best" number (5/9, 4/10, 3/11) with the jungle hex. The jungle hex should, if possible, not receive a red number token. Under no circumstances may it receive the tokens with "2" or "12". If two hexes have equally good number tokens, the starting player decides.
  • The pasture hex goes back into the box; it is no longer needed in this variant.
  • Players found their two starting settlements by the normal rules.
  • The red discovery chips are placed within the players' reach.
  • At the start of the game, the robber is placed on the jungle hex.

Playing the Game

Play follows the usual rules.

Additional Rules

  • When the number of the jungle hex is rolled, each player who has a settlement on this jungle hex receives 1 red discovery chip. For a city, the owner receives 2 discovery chips.
  • Discovery chips count as wildcards when buying a development card. They can replace any resource that is needed to buy a development card.
  • Example: a player buys 1 development card and pays, for example, with 1 ore resource card and 2 discovery chips. Paying with 1 grain, 1 discovery chip and 1 wool would also be possible.
  • Note: discovery chips do not count as resources. They have no significance when a "7" is rolled, and they cannot be stolen, nor can they be traded.
