Components

25 animal cards (5 animals in 5 colours each), 25 tokens (in 5 colours), 60 trail cards and 10 restriction cards.

Animals

Each animal has a distinctive shape and a given colour. Since there are 5 colours and 5 shapes, there are 25 cards in total representing the various animals you may find.

The Animal Farm

The animals are scattered all over the place, but first of all players will have to set up the farm. In order to do so, each player is dealt 4 animal cards. The remaining animal cards are placed face-down within a 5 x 5 square grid, covering the indicated spaces depending on the number of players:

The starting player is chosen. Then, beginning with the player to the right of the starting player and following counterclockwise, each player places one of his animal cards face-down on any of the empty spaces, so that eventually the 5 x 5 grid is covered with cards. The last animal card will be placed by the starting player. Once the farm has been built, play proceeds clockwise.

Trail Cards

Trail cards show the tracks the animals left behind. Each trail card displays a sequence of 5 animal tracks. Based on the difficulty to find the right animal, the value in the trail card will range from 1 to 6. There are two types of trail cards:

  • Colour trails: what matters is not the shape of the animal but their colour.
  • Shape trails: what matters is not the colour of the animal but their shape.

The Search for Animals and the Restriction Cards

The tracks in each trail card indicate the type of animal that must be found. On colour trails, each track shows the colour(s) of the animal that must be found, whereas on shape trails each track indicates the shape(s) of the animal that must be found. The arrow in each card indicates the order in which the animals should be found.

Restriction cards further complicate the search for animals. There are two types of restriction cards:

  • Shape restriction: on colour trails you may look for animals of any shape except for the shape indicated in the shape-restricting card.
  • Colour restriction: on shape trails you may look for animals of any colour except for the colour indicated in the colour-restricting card.

[Game example: an example of colour-restricting and shape-restricting cards]

On the Trail

2 to 5 players, 15 minutes each.

Setup

Draw 2 shape trail cards and 2 colour trail cards at random. Arrange them in ascending order and then alternate each type of trail so that a longer trail consisting of 20 tracks is made. Take two tokens from each player and place them next to this trail: one will be used as a marker and the other as the lead token. Each player then draws 1 colour-restricting card and 1 shape-restricting card. Finally, set up the farm according to the number of players.

Gameplay

Players will try to move along the trail by finding the animals in the right sequence. During his turn a player may either:

  • Reveal an animal card in the farm:
    • If the revealed animal matches the colour/shape of the first empty track (i.e. not occupied by another token) in front of his lead token and is not restricted by any of his restriction cards, the lead token moves onto that track.
    • If the animal card doesn't match the first empty track, the lead token goes back to where the player's marker is and the game continues to the next player.
  • Pass: the player moves his marker to where his lead token is. Then it's the next player's turn.

As soon as a player finishes his turn he must put all the animals he revealed back face-down. This is a good time to try and memorize where each animal is!

End of the Game

As soon as a player reaches the end of the trail, each player scores 1 point for each completed trail card. Then a new trail is created with 5 trail cards (either 2 colour trails and 3 shape trails or 3 colour trails and 2 shape trails). Each player's tokens are placed back next to the trail and the farm is set up again by placing all the animal cards face down, back on their spot.

Restriction cards then change hands. With 4 or less players, the restriction cards that were not used are placed between any two players, creating a "virtual player". Next, all colour-restricting cards are given to the player on the left and all shape-restricting cards to the player on the right (including any "virtual player", if needed). The new round begins with the turn of the person to the left of the player who finished the previous round. After this second round the player with the most points is the winner.

Note: the Spanish text of this section has no explicit game-end sentence; the English "After this second round..." sentence is transcribed as printed.

Trailbusters

2 to 5 players, 10 minutes each.

Setup

Deal each player either 2 colour trail cards and 1 shape trail card or 2 shape trail cards and 1 colour trail card. Next, each player arranges his trail cards in ascending order and creates a longer trail by alternating between his colour and shape trail cards. Then, every player puts one of his tokens next to each trail. Every player then draws a colour-restricting card and a shape-restricting card and places them next to his trail. Finally, arrange the farm grid based on the number of players.

Gameplay

Players take turns clockwise. During his turn a player performs the following steps:

  • Chooses a trail.

  • Reveals an animal card in the farm. The revealed animal must match the next empty track in the chosen trail, counting on the following considerations:

    1. If the player chose his own trail, only his restriction cards apply.
    2. If the player chose another player's trail, both his restriction cards and the other player's restriction cards apply.

If the revealed animal is not restricted and matches the animal on the next empty track, the active player's token moves onto that track. Otherwise, his turn ends and he places all the animal cards he revealed back face-down.

  • If a player's token reaches the end of the trail, each player on that trail scores 1 point per completed trail card. Play then continues normally (without changing the acting player).

End of the Game

The game ends when all trails have been scored. The player with the most points is the winner.

Time Trail

2 to 5 players, 10 minutes each.

Setup

Sort out the trail cards according to their value (1-6), thereby creating 6 piles. Setup the farm based on the number of players.

Gameplay

A game lasts 6 rounds. In each round, players take turns clockwise performing the following actions:

  • Draw a card from the pile corresponding to the number of the present round (from the 1-value pile during the first round, from the 2-value pile during the second round, etc).
  • The player may draw one restriction card at random. This restriction card will only apply to this player during the present round.
  • Reveal animal cards in the farm one by one until 5 animals that match the tracks on the trail card have been found. If the player drew a restriction card, this would apply as well.
  • The player scores:
    • 1 point per each face-down animal card remaining in the farm.
    • 5 bonus points if the player drew a restriction card.
    • 5 bonus points if the animals were revealed following the same sequence displayed in the trail card.

Once every player has concluded his turn, a new round begins.

End of the Game

The player with the most points at the end of the sixth round is the winner.

Solo Rules

1 player, 20 minutes.

Setup

Sort out the trail cards according to their value (1-6), thereby creating 6 piles. Create a deck with the colour-restricting cards and another one with the shape-restricting cards. Reveal the top card of each restriction deck. Setup the farm by placing at random all 25 animal cards face-down in a 5 x 5 grid. Look at the 4 animal cards in each of the 4 corners and leave them face-down again.

Gameplay

A game lasts 6 rounds. In each round you must perform the following actions:

  • Draw a card from the pile corresponding to the number of the present round (from the 1-value pile during the first round, from the 2-value pile during the second round, etc).
  • Reveal 5 animals in the farm. If the 5 animals match the tracks shown in the trail card and are not restricted, you score the number of points indicated in the trail card. If the animals were revealed in the right sequence, you get 1 bonus point.
  • Discard the trail card.

End of the Game

A full game lasts for 3 games with the same animal farm. However restriction cards are changed after each game. Your goal for the first game is scoring 15 points after the 6 rounds. For your second game you must score 19 points and 24 points for your third game.

If you still find this not challenging enough, play 6 games increasing by one your target score in each game after the third. Try reaching a score of 27 points!
