The Rolling Turtles

Our rolling turtles are turtles of a very special breed. They have spherical shells and spherical feet. Furthermore they don't move like normal turtles but roll! To try and see, place a shell on any turtle body.

How to Move the Turtles

Place the turtle in front of you. Put your fingers on top of the spherical shell and slide your hand gently downwards on the ball. The shell moves backwards but the turtle starts to roll ahead!

Try it several times and make the turtle roll a short distance, a long distance, very quickly or very slowly.

The Game Boards

The game board is printed on both sides and shows on one side the glade stadium and on the other the turtle stadium.

The Glade Stadium

Parts of the board: starting squares, spectator squares (e.g. elephant spectator square), target squares.

Important! The spectator squares are the entire row of four squares belonging to one specific type of spectator.

The Soccer Stadium

(The turtle stadium side, used for Game 5: Turtle Soccer.)

Game 1: Quickly, Turtle, Be Quick!

Who will be best at rolling their turtle, thereby collecting the most animal cards?

Game Material Needed: One turtle per player, game board, the 9 animal cards.

Preparation of the Game

Spread the game board with the glade stadium face up on the table. The players take the bodies of the turtles and put the corresponding colored shell on it. Shuffle the nine animal cards and put them in a pile face down.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. The youngest player starts. They choose a racetrack and put their turtle on the corresponding starting square. Then they choose an animal card from the top of the pile. This card indicates up to which spectators' square (= whole row) the turtles should be rolled toward.

Roll your turtle trying to reach that square. The turtle stays where it landed until all players have their turn. It may happen that turtles standing still will be nudged on by following turtles - that is allowed. When all players have had their turn, do the scoring.

Scoring

  • Are one or more turtles touching or standing on the corresponding spectator square? Well done! As a reward the player whose turtle is furthest ahead on the corresponding square, gets the animal card.
  • No turtle touches the square? Then the player whose turtle is closest to the corresponding square, gets the card.
  • Has a turtle rolled past the square in question or even past the edge of the game board? The corresponding player doesn't win an animal card in this round. If all turtles have rolled past the edge of the game board, no player gets an animal card. The card is taken off the game and a new round starts.

After scoring the players take back their turtles.

Example: Turtle A has rolled too far, thus left without score. Turtle B is closest to the row corresponding to square of the animal uncovered and wins this card. Turtles C and D are not close enough and win nothing in this round.

New Round

The player who won the last animal card uncovers a new one, places their turtle on the starting square and starts moving.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as all animal cards have been distributed. The player with the most cards wins the game and is named the best Turtle Twiddler.

Variation

The following additional rules also apply:

  • At the beginning of the game all players put their turtle on any starting square of the race-track.
  • If after one turn at rolling, the turtle touches the corresponding square with at least one foot, you get this animal card. Uncover a new card for the following player and place your turtle back on its starting square.
  • If your turtle does not roll on to the corresponding square, it stays where it stopped. You roll it again in the next round.
  • If your turtle stands already on the spectators' square of which the card has just been uncovered you get this card - but not until it's your turn again and only if the card is not yet taken. Then you place your turtle back on its starting square, uncover a new card and roll the turtle.
  • If a turtle has left its track, it is put back on its track at the same point where it came to a stand still.
  • If a turtle rolls or is pushed past the edge of the game board, it starts again from its starting square.

Game 2: Turtle Memory

Who will be especially skillful at rolling their turtle, having a good memory and thus collecting the most animal cards?

Game Material Needed: One turtle per player, game board, the 9 animal cards.

Preparation of the Game

Spread the game board with the glade stadium face up on the table. Each player takes their turtle and puts the corresponding shell on it. Cover the animal cards, shuffle them and distribute them in a row on the table (face down, next to each other).

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. The smallest player starts and puts their turtle on any starting square.

Make your turtle roll. Have a look at the animal on the spectators' square where it stopped. If the turtle's round feet touch two squares, have a look at the animals of both squares. Then try to uncover the corresponding animal card.

Does your turtle touch the square of the animal uncovered?

  • Yes? Well done! As a reward you get this animal card.
  • No. Bad luck. Cover the animal card again.

Then place your turtle in front of you. It's the turn of the next player.

Hint: At the beginning of the game you don't know where which animal is hidden. During the game however you get more and more information.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as all animal cards have been distributed. The player with the most cards wins this memory competition.

Game 3: Twiddle Turtle, To and Fro!

Who, with a bit of luck with the die, will gather three animal cards first?

Game Material Needed: One turtle per player, game board, the 9 animal cards, the die with the dots.

Preparation

Spread the game board with the glade stadium face up on the table. Each player takes a turtle, puts the corresponding shell on it and places it on one of the starting squares. Shuffle all nine animal cards and get them ready in a pile face down. Uncover the card on top and get the die ready.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. The biggest player starts and throws the die.

Watch out! You won't roll your turtles but move them from square to square and try to move it to the square corresponding to the uncovered animal.

The moving rules:

  • Move your turtle as many squares as dots are shown on the die. You have to use all the dots.
  • At the beginning of the game you may move your turtle in only one direction.
  • During the rest of the game you can move your turtle forwards or backwards in the same move.

Your turtle lands on the spectator square of the animal uncovered? As a reward you get the animal card. Put it in front of you and uncover a new one. Then it's the turn of the next player.

A card has been uncovered and your turtle stands already on the corresponding spectator square? Then you get the card - but not until it's your turn again and if the card has not yet been taken. Uncover a new card and move your turtle.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as a player has collected three cards. They win this to and fro competition.

Game 4: The Turtle Run

Whose turtle will reach the target first?

Game Material Needed: All four turtles, game board, the four turtle cards, the rod.

Preparation of the Game

Spread the game board with the glade stadium face up on the table. In this game, you always play with all four turtles, regardless of how many players. Each turtle gets a shell of another color than the one of its feet. Place the turtles on the starting squares.

Cover and shuffle the four turtle cards. Each player secretly draws a card. This card determines which is their competition turtle (color of the shell). Get the rod die ready.

If there are two or three players then the unused cards are placed back in the box.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. The fastest runner among you starts the game. If you can't agree the youngest player starts and throws the rod die.

Move a turtle exactly one square. You can, however, choose which one you want to move. Either the turtle ...

  • ... with the correspondingly colored rolling feet or
  • ... the correspondingly colored shell.

Then it's the turn of the next player to throw the color rod die.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as one turtle has reached the target. The players uncover their turtle cards. The winner is the one whose turtle is shown on the turtle card.

If a turtle that doesn't belong to any player has reached the target first, then the winner is the player whose turtle is closest to the target. In case of a draw there are various winners.

Game 5: Turtle Soccer

Who will score three goals at turtle soccer first? A sporty game for two turtle soccer players.

Game Material Needed: 2 turtles, game board, 4 posts, die with dots, turtle ball.

Preparation of the Game

Spread the game board with the turtle stadium face up on the table. Place the four posts as goal posts on the marks of the game board. Put the turtle ball on the kick-off spot in the center of the game board. Take a seat at opposite sides of the table thus determining which part of the pitch belongs to whom.

Each player takes a turtle, puts the correspondingly colored shell on it and places it in front of them. Get the die with the dots ready.

How to Play

The younger player starts. They are the forward. The older player at the beginning of the game is the defender.

The defender puts their turtle on any spot of the game board respecting at least a distance of one length of a turtle from the turtle ball.

Then the forward puts their turtle behind the turtle ball and rolls the die. Then they roll the turtle towards the turtle ball and try to shoot the ball into the direction of the opponent's goal.

Important turtle soccer rules

  • The forward may kick the ball as many times as dots appear on the die. After each kick they can reposition their turtle.
  • The forward may shove aside the turtle of the defender while kicking.
  • The move of the forward ends as soon as the ball has rolled over the edge of the game board. Then the players change role. The ball is positioned where it left the game board.
  • The forward marks a goal when the turtle ball has passed through both posts and rolls over the line into the goal. The move ends. The ball is placed back on the kick-off spot and the players change roles.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as a player has marked three goals.

Hints

  • You can also determine another number of goals for victory.
  • If there are more than two players playing turtle soccer, play in two teams. The players of the teams change after each move.
  • Professional kickers of course can play at the big turtle soccer tournament. In this case all teams play against each other in order to determine the winner of the tournament.
