  • 16 pirate ship cards ("puzzle pieces")
  • 1 hourglass
  • rules

Goal of the Game

Whoever can hand over the most treasures to Cap'n Snaggletooth, and with that, is the first to complete their pirate ship "puzzle", wins the game!

Game Preparation

  • Place all the treasures in the middle of the table!
  • Every player gets a treasure chest.
  • Mix the "Jack-Boards" and place them facedown in a stack next to the treasures.
  • Separate the pirate ship cards according to bow, middle parts and stern and place them face-up on the table.
  • Place the hourglass next to them.

Gameplay

Each player opens his/her chest. The youngest "pirate" yells: "For the Cap'n" and turns the hourglass over.

Now, all pirates simultaneously try to pack as many treasures as possible into their chests:

  1. You should always take only one treasure at a time from the pile in the middle and place it in the chest. After that, you can choose the next treasure, and so on.
  2. When you think your chest is full, put the top on it.
  3. At the latest, when the hourglass has run out, each player must quickly close his/her chest:
    • Place the top on the chest correctly (lock to lock)!
    • The top cannot be left open even a crack, but must lay flush on top.
    • If a crack can be seen, the respective "pirate" must take treasures out of the chest until the top can be closed flush.
    • Rearranging treasures after the fact is not allowed!

Scoring

The youngest player turns over the top "Jack-Board", opens his/her chest and empties it. Then, he/she compares his/her treasures with the ones on the board. (To better see, the treasures can be placed on the respective picture that corresponds in shape and colour.)

  • If the player has treasures that can be seen on the board, unfortunately, he/she has to place them aside. They belong to Jewels Jack and will not be counted.
  • All treasures left are counted.
  • Then, all other pirates, one after the other (clockwise), compare their treasures with the "Jack Board".
  • Who has collected the most for Cap'n Snaggletooth in this round? That "pirate" can take one of the pirate ship cards and place it in front of him/her.
  • In case several players tie with the same (highest) number of treasures, each one may take a card.
  • Afterwards, the "Jack-Board" is placed facedown under the stack and the next round begins. Place all treasures back in the middle and play another round!
  • Each time a new "Jack-Board" is turned over you can see a different selection of treasures that will be claimed by Jewels Jack …

End of the Game

As soon as a pirate has all four pirate ship cards, meaning a complete ship, he/she has won – Congratulations!

For a shorter game time, use only one middle part, so that the ship is complete with only three cards.

In case of a tie, there are multiple winners.

Variation for Little Pirates

Here, the hourglass is not turned over until the first player has filled his/her chest and placed the top flush on it. At the latest, when the hourglass has run out, all other players must put the tops on their chests. Then, it is time for comparing and counting, as described above.

Variation for Big Pirates

For a change, the "pirates" have determined in advance, which treasures Jewels Jack will get for each trip.

Here is how it goes:

  • First, a player turns over the top "Jack-Board".
  • Another player turns over the hourglass.
  • On command, all players simultaneously pack treasures into their chests (according to the rules described above) – and everyone tries to not get any of the treasures shown on the board.
  • When the hourglass has run out, it is time for comparing again – and if there is still a corresponding treasure in the chest, it is taken out.
  • Who has the most jewels, crowns or swords now? That pirate is the cleverest and wins the round.

Also here, the overall winner is determined as soon as he/she could assemble all the pirate ship cards.

Have fun with the breath-taking Treasure Trouble!
