Object of the Game

Rule the kingdom by collecting enough precious Relics to begin your turn with 7 points.

Contents

  • 24 Fortune Cards
  • 28 Power Cards
  • 2 Character Cards
  • 1 Fairy Card
  • 6 Character Dice
  • 1 Fairy Die

Setup for 2 Players

Each player chooses a Character Card and places it in front of them with the text side face up. Players are then given the set of three Character Dice that matches their Character. The seventh die is the Fairy Die, which is used with the Fairy Card and is set in the center of the table along with the Fairy Card for use later in the game.

The Power Cards and Fortune Cards are shuffled separately.

Note: If more than one set of Scary Tales is used, combine all cards of the same type to form one deck of each and put the additional Fairy Cards and Dice in the center of the table.

Five Power Cards are dealt to each player's hand, and the rest are placed face down next to the Fairy Card(s) in the center of the table to form a draw pile.

Each player is dealt one Fortune Card. If it is a Relic, it is placed face up in front of them to begin their Relic Stack. If the player is dealt an Event, it is discarded and another Fortune Card is dealt. If the player is dealt a Companion, it is placed face up, next to that player's Character, and another Fortune Card must be dealt to that player until they receive a Relic. Any text on the first Relic Card dealt to each player is ignored.

Any Events that were discarded are shuffled back into the Fortune Deck at this time. The rest of the Fortune Deck is placed in the center of the table to form a draw pile. One player is chosen at random to take the first turn.

Setup for More Than 2 Players

Combine sets to add more players! You need one game set for every 2 players.

  1. Players may choose what character they play randomly from the boxed sets, or bring their favorite Scary Tales character and dice with them to the battle from their favorite Scary Tales expansion.

  2. If more than one set of Scary Tales is used, combine all cards of the same type to form one deck of each and put the additional Fairy Cards and Dice in the center of the table.

Game Play for More Than 2 Players

On each player's turn, they take the following five steps:

  1. Choose an opponent's Top Relic card as the target of the attack.

  2. Prepare the attack by playing any Pre-Roll Power Cards face up.

  3. Roll the three Character Dice, and resolve the attack.

  4. Play any Post-Roll Power Cards face up and discard them.

  5. Draw one Power Card and add it to their hand. Then draw one Relic Card and place it face up on the top of their Relic Stack.

Attacking (More Than 2 Players)

  1. When attacking, a player may choose the top relic on any player's Relic Stack as a target. The attack is carried out as normal.

  2. In a multiplayer game, the attacking player is not given another attack after a successful attack.

2-Player Game Play

On each player's turn, they take the following five steps:

  1. Target the top Relic card on their opponent's Relic stack.

  2. Prepare the attack by playing any Pre-Roll Power Cards face up.

  3. Roll the three Character Dice, and resolve the attack as described below.

  4. Play any Post-Roll Power Cards and discard them.

  5. Draw one Power Card and add it to their hand. Then draw one Relic Card and place it face up on the top of their Relic Stack as described below.

Card Types

Character Cards: A Character Card may be used for its printed effect once per game, after which it is turned over, and may not be used again. Character Cards may be used at any time during a player's turn (including after rolling Character Dice).

Companion Cards: If a Companion Card is drawn from the Fortune Deck, it is placed next to the drawing player's Character Card, and may be used for its effect once per game, after which it is discarded. Companion Cards may be used at any time during a player's turn (including after rolling Character Dice).

Power Cards: Power Cards consist of Creature and Influence Cards. Creature Cards have Attribute Icons printed on them, and are played before rolling the Character Dice. Those Attributes are added to those rolled on the dice. Influence Cards enhance the die roll or otherwise benefit the Character. Some are played before rolling the Character Dice (Pre-Roll), some afterwards (Post-Roll). Influence Cards without a symbol on them are either played instead of making an attack, or can be played either before or after the attack. Power Cards may only be used for an attack, and may not be used during Events or any other time the Character Dice might be rolled.

Fairy Cards: Certain cards allow players to take control of a Fairy. While a player has control of a Fairy, they place the Fairy Card next to their Character Card, and the Fairy Die is added to their Character Dice, giving them one additional die to roll. Each Fairy Die is different, and the different faces of each one are shown on the corresponding Fairy Card. No player may ever control more than one Fairy at once. If a player ever gains control of a second Fairy, they must choose one to return to the center of the table.

Event Cards: If an Event Card is drawn from the Fortune Deck, its effects take place immediately.

Relic Cards: Each Relic Card has a number indicating its point value, as well as a color. Point values are either numbers ("1", "2", etc.) or modifiers ("+2", "+4"). The point value indicates the amount of points that Relic Card contributes to victory for the player who controls it. If a point value is a modifier, that Relic Card only contributes its modifier score if the player controlling it has another Relic Card of the same color in their Relic Stack (including single-colored modifiers). If a modifier shows all four colors, it only contributes its points if the controlling player has at least one Relic Card of each color (including single-colored modifiers) in their Relic Stack. Each Relic Card has a combination of Attribute Icons, which represent the Attributes that must be rolled on the Character Dice in order to successfully capture it from the controlling player.

Attacking (2-Player)

When attacking, the player targets the top card of their opponent's Relic Stack. They may then play any Influence Cards in front of them to help improve their chances of success, or Creature Cards to give them additional Attribute Icons. The player then rolls their Character Dice.

  • Strength, Wisdom & Luck: Each of these Attributes can be used in their natural form, or can be used as 1 Magic.
  • Magic: Magic cannot be converted to any other Attributes. However, it is often produced in multiples. Three Magic is represented by three Magic symbols.
  • Wish: A Wish can be converted to Strength, Wisdom, Luck or 3 Magic.
  • Void: Produces no effect.

The player examines the results of their Character Dice, along with any additional Attribute Icons they may have produced from Creature Cards.

  • If they produce all of the Attribute Icons listed on the Relic they have targeted, their attack is successful. They take the Relic, and place it on top of their own Relic Stack. All Power Cards played are discarded.
  • If they fail to produce all of the Attribute Icons on the targeted Relic, their attack is unsuccessful. However, all of the Pre-Roll Power Cards they have played are returned to their hand.

After an attack, the player may play any Post-Roll Power Cards they wish, attempting to turn failure into success. All Post-Roll Power Cards are discarded once they are played.

NOTE: After each successful attack in a 2-Player game, the player may attack again.

Drawing Cards

At the end of a player's turn, they draw one Power Card and add it to their hand. They then draw one Fortune Card and show it to their opponent with the following effects:

  • If the card is a Companion, it is placed in front of the drawing player, and another Fortune Card is drawn.
  • If the card is an Event, it resolves immediately, and another Fortune Card is drawn.
  • If the card is a Relic, it is usually placed on top of the drawing player's Relic Stack, and the turn ends.
  • If the draw pile with the Power Cards runs out, reshuffle the discarded Power Cards into a new draw pile.
  • If the draw pile with the Fortune Cards runs out, no further Fortune Cards can be drawn, but play continues.

Winning the Game

The first player to begin a turn with 7 points worth of Relics immediately wins the game.

For a Longer Game

To increase the length of the game for more battling fun, change the point requirement to 10 points, in order to win the game!
