Animal Tiles
Each tile shows:
- Illustration — the animal's picture.
- Influence value (1–5) — in general, the higher the number, the more favorable it is during territory judgment.
- Symbol (colorblind-friendly) — indicates each player's assigned color.
Objective
Each player places their own animal tiles onto empty spaces of the board, contesting territory row by row, and earns points based on the influence of the animal tiles they've placed.
In the end, score more than anyone else and aim to become the "Savanna King"!
Setup (4-Player Game)
- Each player takes their choice of one color of animal tiles: 2 Monkeys, 2 Zebras, 1 Giraffe, 1 Elephant, plus the score marker of the same color, and places their marker on the "0" space of the score track.
- Shuffle all tiles with the Lion side face up and place them as a face-down draw pile in front of you.
- Each player then takes the top 2 tiles from their own draw pile as their hand.
- Finally, whoever is a Leo (astrological sign) becomes the start player. If there are two or more Leos, or none, decide with rock-paper-scissors or similar.
Flow of Play
- Starting with the start player, take turns in clockwise order. On your turn:
- After checking the contents of your 2 hand tiles, decide whether to show the "animal side" or the "Lion side" face up, then place it on an empty space on the board.
- After placing your tile, draw one tile from your draw pile to refill your hand, then it becomes the next player's turn.
- Afterward, if placing the tile completes a row of "3 spaces" or "4 spaces" in any direction (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal), perform "Territory Judgment" for each completed row. Turns continue in this manner until every player has finished placing all 5 of their tiles.
Territory Judgment
-
If a row of "3 spaces" or "4 spaces" is filled in any direction (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal), perform "Territory Judgment" for each such row.
- If multiple rows are completed at the same time, the active player may judge them in whichever order they like.
-
At that point, whichever player(s) meet one of the following conditions score:
- A: If the total influence of all tiles in the row is "9 or less," compare the total influence of tiles each player has placed in that row; the player(s) with the highest total influence earn 2 points.
- B: If the total influence of all tiles in the row is "11 or more," compare the total influence of tiles each player has placed in that row; the player(s) with the lowest total influence earn 1 point.
- For both A and B, if multiple players are tied for the relevant total influence, all of those tied players score.
- C: If the total influence of all tiles in the row is exactly "10," only the active player who placed a tile in that row earns 3 points.
-
A player who scores advances their marker on the score track by the number of points earned.
Example
(Board columns A–E, rows 1–5.)
- Turn 3: active player [Red] plays 2D — [Red] scores 3 points.
- Turn 3: active player [Blue] plays 3B — [Blue] scores 2 points.
- Turn 3: active player [Yellow] plays 5B — [Yellow] scores 3 points.
- Turn 3: active player [Green] plays 4C — [Green] scores 5 points (3+2 points).
- Turn 4: active player [Red] plays 4E — [Red] and [Yellow] each score 2 points.
- Turn 4: active player [Blue] plays 4D — [Blue] scores 4 points (3 points + 1 point).
- Turn 4: active player [Yellow] plays 3A — [Yellow] scores 3 points.
- Turn 4: active player [Green] plays 1C — [Green] scores 3 points, [Blue] scores 2 points.
- Turn 5: active player [Red] plays 5C — [Red] scores 5 points (2+1+2 points).
- Turn 5: active player [Blue] plays 1A — [Blue] scores 4 points (3 points + 1 point).
- Turn 5: active player [Yellow] plays 1E — [Yellow] scores 5 points, [Blue] scores 3 points.
- Turn 5: active player [Green] plays 5A — [Green] scores 6 points (2+1+3 points), [Yellow] scores 1 point.
Game End and Victory Conditions
- The game ends once every player has placed all of their tiles and Territory Judgment has been performed for every row (20 in total).
- In a 4-player game, every player will have 1 tile remaining in hand after their final turn.
- At that point, the player with the most points wins.
- In case of a tie, the player who has fewer Lions placed on the board wins.
- If that is also tied, share the victory!
3-Player Game
Only differences from the 4-player game are noted here.
- Each player takes their choice of one color of tiles: 3 Monkeys, 2 Zebras, 1 Giraffe, 1 Elephant, plus the score marker of the same color.
- The 1st and 2nd players place their marker on the "0" space of the score track; the 3rd player places theirs on the "2" space.
- Only the 1st and 2nd players take a final turn.
- The 3rd player finishes with 1 tile remaining in hand, without taking a final turn.
2-Player Game
Only differences from the 4-player game are noted here.
- Each player takes their choice of one color of all tiles except the "Mouse," plus the score marker of the same color, and places their marker on the "0" space of the score track.
Team Play
Only differences from the 4-player game are noted here.
- Players split into a Warm Team (red, yellow) and a Cool Team (blue, green), seated clockwise in the order red, blue, yellow, green.
- On the Warm Team, the red player is the leader; on the Cool Team, the blue player is the leader. Each places the red or blue marker on the "0" space of the score track.
- Territory Judgment is performed comparing the combined influence of each team (the total of its 2 members).
Advanced Rules
Only differences from the basic rules are noted here.
- When playing with this rule, replace 1 "Monkey" tile with the "Mouse" tile.
- During Territory Judgment, the player who has placed the Mouse earns 1 additional point every time they score in the row where their Mouse is placed.
- As with normal Territory Judgment (A/B), this scoring applies even outside that player's own turn.
Example
(Board columns A–E, rows 1–5.)
- Turn 4: active player [Yellow] plays 3A — [Yellow] scores 3 points.
- Turn 4: active player [Green] plays 1C — [Green] scores 3 points, [Blue] scores 2 points.
- Turn 5: active player [Red] plays 5C — [Red] scores 5 points (2+1+2 points).
- Turn 5: active player [Blue] plays 1A — [Blue] scores 4 points (3 points + 1 point).
- Turn 5: active player [Yellow] plays 1E — [Yellow] scores 5 points, [Blue] scores 3 points.
- Turn 5: active player [Green] plays 5A — [Green] scores 6 points (2+1+3 points), [Yellow] scores 1 point.
