The Satanimals

Satanimals are collected and placed in your Petting Zoo for points.

Visitors

Visitors can be kept for points or sacrificed to attack your rivals.

Zoo Keepers

Zoo Keepers are placed on Satanimals to protect them from other players.

Setup

The amount of cards used in SATANIMALS depends on the number of players.

2 Players: 6 of each Satanimal, 24 Visitors (red balloon), and 4 Zoo Keepers.

3 Players: 10 of each Satanimal, 31 Visitors (red & blue balloon), and 7 Zoo Keepers.

4 Players: 13 of each Satanimal, 44 Visitors, and 9 Zoo Keepers (all cards).

First Player: The player with the most pets in real life is the starting player. Shuffle all the cards together. Deal 1 card to the starting player and 3 cards to everyone else, this is your starting hand.

Main Attraction: Deal 1 random Main Attraction card to each player. Keep this card face down in front of you and do not show anyone.

The Queue: Divide the rest of the cards into 9 equal decks placed facedown in a 3x3 grid in the center of the table. Flip over the top card of each deck. This is the Queue.

How to Play

At the start of your turn, you must draw 3 cards in-a-row from the Queue to put in your hand. Cards are drawn in a horizontal or vertical line. You cannot draw diagonally. After you have drawn from the Queue, flip over all top face-down cards.

Throughout the game, decks may start to disappear from the Queue. You must always draw exactly 3 cards when drawing from the Queue. There is no limit to the amount of cards a player can have in their hand at one time.

The Eternal Flame

The Eternal Flame starts at the center of the table next to the Queue. When a player draws 3 of the same card in-a-row from the Queue they take possession of the Eternal Flame. If a player already possesses the Eternal Flame when you draw 3 of the same, take the Eternal Flame from them.

Whoever possesses the Eternal Flame at the end of the game is granted +3 points.

Actions

During your turn you may choose up to 2 of the following 3 actions in any order after you have drawn from the Queue:

  • Play Satanimals in your Zoo
  • Play a Zoo Keeper on a stack of Satanimals
  • Sacrifice Visitors

You may not perform the same action twice per turn. After you have completed all of your actions, your turn is over and the player to the left starts their turn.

Playing Satanimals

Satanimals are placed in stacks in front of you in your Petting Zoo. A stack consists of any amount of the same Satanimal that is not already present in your peting zoo. (e.g. a stack will consist of all Sloths but not a mix of Sloths and Envys. The stack of Sloths can only be placed if you do not already have a stack of Sloths in your Petting Zoo.)

A stack must have at least 1 Satanimal. Once a stack is placed in your Petting Zoo, you may not add anymore Satanimals to that stack for the rest of the game.

Each Satanimal in a stack is worth 2 points plus an additional point for each Satanimal beneath it in the same stack. (e.g. The bottom Sloth is worth 2 points, the second Sloth is worth 3 points, the third Sloth is worth 4 points and so on.)

Playing Zoo Keepers

A Zoo Keeper's goal is to protect your Satanimals. You can only place a Zoo Keeper on top of your own stack, protecting that grouping of Satanimals. Zoo Keepers cannot be placed on top of other Zoo Keepers.

The player with the most Zoo Keepers in their hand at the end of the game receives 3 bonus points. In the case of a tie, all tied players receive 3 bonus points.

Sacrificing Visitors

Like most Petting Zoos, players will have to sacrifice their Visitors to sabotage rival zoos. Visitors are sacrificed straight from your hand and placed into the Sacrificial Pit (discard pile). You can only perform 1 sacrifice per turn and you must have at least 1 stack of Satanimals in your own zoo before you can sacrifice any Visitors.

Sacrifice 1 Visitor from your hand to steal a card from another player. Name the card that you want to steal. If the player has that card in their hand they must give it to you, if they don't, you do not steal a card. You cannot steal a Visitor from another player's hand.

Sacrifice 2 Visitors to destroy the top Satanimal or Zoo Keeper of an opponent's stack. (For a game with 2 players, you must sacrifice 3 Visitors.)

Game End

The game ends once 1 player has a completed Petting Zoo that consists of all 5 Satanimals OR if there are no cards in the Queue when a player must draw.

If the game ends by a player completing their Petting Zoo, all other players take one more turn. If the Queue runs out before all players have received their extra turn, the game ends immediately.

The first player to complete their Petting Zoo is awarded the 'Completed Zoo' token worth +3 points. If a stack of Satanimals is completely removed after you have completed your zoo, you are still awarded the 'Completed Zoo' token and the game still ends.

Main Attraction

At the beginning of the game, each player is dealt 1 'Main Attraction' card. Each of the 5 Satanimals are represented on their own Main Attraction. Keep your Main Attraction card facedown and hidden from all other players. Never reveal it. At the end of the game, for each Satanimal in your zoo that matches the one on your Main Attraction, you get +1 point.

Scoring

The winner is determined by the player with the most points at the end of the game. If there is a tie, the player with the 'Completed Zoo' token wins.

The scoring summary on the rules sheet lists:

  • 2+ Points: Satanimals in stack
  • 1+ Points: Main Attraction
  • 1 Point: Visitors in hand
  • 3 Points: Most Zoo Keepers in hand
  • 3 Points: Completed Zoo Token
