Table of Contents
Components
88 cards:
- 8 Chef cards
- Ingredient cards
- 6 one-star MasterClass cards (for Round 1)
- 6 two-star MasterClass cards (for Round 2)
Goal of the Game
Be the Chef with the most stars at the end of the game.
Setup
- Each player takes a Chef card and places it in front of them. Unused Chef cards are put back in the box.
- Place the 1-star and 2-star MasterClass cards in two separate piles at the edge of the table.
The Sandwich of the Day
Randomly take a MasterClass card matching the current round (1 star for Round 1, 2 stars for Round 2). Place it in the centre of the table and announce the theme of the Sandwich of the Day.
The Pantry Rush (3 times in a row)
Shuffle the Ingredient cards. Deal 3 Ingredient cards, face down, in a line in front of each Chef. Get ready by taking 2 cards each in hand.
Count "1, 2, 3, GO!"
Simultaneously turn over your 2 cards in hand. Rush to take 3 ingredients that interest you from among all those available on the table (whether placed/turned over by you or by another player).
If an Ingredient card is face down, you may turn it face up to see what is underneath, before taking it or not. If you do not like it, leave it face up on the table.
An Ingredient card that is face up and taken in hand must be kept and placed face up right in front of you at the edge of the table. No one else may touch it any more.
When you have all selected 3 Ingredient cards, place them face down under your shopping basket (at the bottom of your Chef card).
IMPORTANT: Repeat the Pantry Rush 2 more times so that each Chef finally has 9 Ingredient cards in their basket.
The Kitchen
With the 9 Ingredient cards in your basket, make 3 sandwiches of 3 ingredients each:
- One sandwich for your right-hand neighbour.
- One sandwich for your left-hand neighbour.
- One sandwich for the MasterClass.
Place your 3 sandwiches around your Chef card: one for your left neighbour, one for your right neighbour, and one for the MasterClass.
The Tasting
Each in turn, take the role of Jury. The order matters little. When it is your turn to be Jury:
- The two Chefs to your right and to your left each reveal the sandwich they made for you and present it to you.
- Announce the one you like best.
- The winner takes one of the 3 cards of the sandwich they made and slides it face down under their Chef card. This card will earn that Chef 1 point at the end of the game.
Then discard the 2 remaining Ingredient cards, as well as the 3 ingredients of the sandwich that was not selected, onto the draw pile.
The Tasting phase ends when all Chefs have taken the role of Jury.
Example: it is Julie's turn (the yellow Chef) to be Jury. Stéphane (red), her left neighbour, presents the sandwich he prepared for her: "Julie, I made you a sandwich that smells of Provence: sardines and grilled aubergines with a crushed-olive topping!" Then Ophélie (blue), her right neighbour, presents the sandwich she prepared for her: "Since you like good meat, here is a 'Label Rouge' beef sandwich, enhanced by a farmhouse emmental and a touch of organic chives!" Julie chooses Ophélie's (blue) sandwich, who places one of its ingredients under her Chef card. Describing the sandwiches is not compulsory.
Chef's tip: You can present them much more simply than in the example above. But it can be fun to describe them to show them off, even embellishing reality a little, because the same picture can sometimes be interpreted in different ways. Parsley looks like coriander, doesn't it? And why not say you made a pesto with it? In short, have fun ;)
The MasterClass
Each in turn, present to the other Chefs the Sandwich of the Day that you made for the MasterClass. Example: "Octopus, chocolate and mozzarella to surprise your taste buds in today's MasterClass!"
When all the Chefs have presented their sandwich, vote:
- All Chefs raise a finger.
- Say "1, 2, 3, GO!".
- Then point at the sandwich that, in your opinion, best respected the theme.
- You may not vote for your own sandwich.
The Chef who gets the most votes wins the MasterClass card and slides it under their Chef card (it is worth 1 or 2 stars depending on the round).
In case of a tie, all tied Chefs each win a MasterClass card of the round concerned. In the very rare cases where there are not enough MasterClass cards (with 7 or 8 players), make up the difference with Ingredient cards.
End of the Round
When the 1st round is finished, shuffle the remaining Ingredient cards and begin the 2nd and last round.
End of the Game and Scoring
At the end of the second round, count the number of stars on the cards placed under your Chef card (1 star for each Ingredient card won, and the number of stars shown on your MasterClass cards).
The Chef with the most stars is declared the winner of this season of Sandwich MasterClass!
Variant: "Grand Finale"
If at the end of a game several players are tied, you may choose to break the tie as follows:
Choose a player among the losers who will take the role of Judge to name the best Chef. Shuffle all the Ingredient cards of the game and divide the deck into as many equal parts as there are tied players. Each of these candidates therefore has a large number of cards in hand.
"Candidates, you have 20 seconds to make a sandwich of 3 ingredients that must please the Judge! 1, 2, 3, GO!"
The Judge counts to 20, then receives a sandwich from each candidate, face down. These sandwiches are shuffled under the table so that the Judge tastes "blind". The Judge then looks at each sandwich and decides which is their favourite, without the players being able to describe them.
The chosen Chef wins the victory for this season!
