Object of the Game

Be the first player to collect seven halos or seven devil's horns, and so prove whether you are a little angel or a true devil's brat.

Components

1 lie detector, 180 question cards, 70 halos, 70 devil's horns, 10 interrogation cards, 10 objection cards and 1 die.

Assembly

Insert the batteries into the lie detector as shown in Figure 1.

Important Battery Notes

We recommend keeping this information for later use.

ATTENTION:

  1. Please follow the instructions below precisely. Use only the specified battery types and insert them correctly, observing the + and − polarity marks.
  2. Standard (zinc carbon) and alkaline batteries, as well as new and used batteries, must not be used together.
  3. Do not leave empty or used batteries in the toy.
  4. Remove the batteries if the toy is not used for a long time.
  5. The terminals must not be short-circuited.
  6. Should the product cause electrical interference, or be affected by such interference, keep it out of reach of other electrical devices. If necessary, switch the product off and on again, or remove the batteries and reinsert them.
  7. DO NOT USE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES. DO NOT RECHARGE OTHER BATTERY TYPES.
  8. As with all small objects, keep batteries away from children. In the event of swallowing, seek medical help immediately.

Setup

  1. Lay out all the game equipment — the lie detector, the question cards, the game rings (halos and devil's horns) and the die — so that every player can easily reach it. Of the objection cards, place half as many alongside as there are players taking part in this round (round up if the number of players is odd).
  2. Deal one interrogation card to each player.

Course of Play

  • The youngest player takes the first turn. Play then continues clockwise.
  • When it is your turn, roll the die. Depending on the roll, you play either a single-player game or a group game.

Single-Player Game

You must answer the question as the only player (see "Admit It!").

  1. Hold the lie detector in your palm, with your index and middle fingers touching the two contacts on the underside of the device (see Figure 2). Do not press the start button yet!
  2. The player sitting to your left draws the top question card, chooses a question and reads it aloud.
  3. Tell the other players your answer.
  4. Your fellow players must now decide whether you answered the question honestly or told a barefaced lie.
    • If your fellow players believe you told the truth, take a halo or a ring of devil's horns, depending on your answer (see "Angel or Devil's Brat?").
    • If your fellow players believe you lied, it is your turn to take the lie detector test! (See "Put Yourself to the Test!")
  5. If your fellow players doubt the result of the lie detector, they may raise an objection against it (see "Objection!").

Once your turn is over, the player sitting to your left is next.

Note: it may also happen that no player has to take the lie detector test, if all players agree that nobody lied.

Group Game

Every player must answer the question (see "Admit It!").

  1. Draw the top question card, choose a question and read it aloud.
  2. Each player answers in turn, one after another — and you are the first.
  3. Discuss with your fellow players which player lied in his or her answer. Only one player per round can be selected for the lie detector test, so choose carefully. The selected player must now take the test! (See "Put Yourself to the Test!")
  4. All other players take a halo or a ring of devil's horns, depending on their answers.
  5. If the result of the lie detector is doubted, the players may raise an objection against it (see "Objection!").

Once your turn is over, the player sitting to your left is next.

Note: it may also happen that no player has to take the lie detector test, if all players agree that nobody lied.

Admit It!

All questions begin with the words "Have you ever..." or "Have you already...". For example: "Have you ever danced naked in front of the mirror?"

You have two options for your answer:

  1. "I have already..." or
  2. "I have never..."

Of course, answer the question in a complete sentence.

Some words in each question are printed in bold. You may change these words freely and so come up with your own probing questions. What else have you always wanted to know from one of your fellow players? For example: "Have you ever stood naked in front of your boss?"

Angel or Devil's Brat?

Each time you have answered a question truthfully (or were not caught lying and got away without an objection), you may take either a halo or a ring of devil's horns.

If you answer the question on the card positively, you have outed yourself as a clear devil's brat. If, however, you were able to rebuff the question truthfully, you count as a little angel and are rewarded with a halo.

  • If your answer is "I have never...", you receive a halo.
  • If your answer is "I have already...", you receive a ring of devil's horns.

Always remember that you must collect seven game rings of one kind — whether as a devil's brat or as an angel. To do so, you may have to stretch the truth here and there...

Put Yourself to the Test!

The lie detector measures the stress level of the player being tested, which is why it must be restarted before every question. (The lie detector, not the player!)

  1. Hold the lie detector in your palm, touching the two contacts on the underside of the device with your index and middle fingers (see Figure 2). Leave the lie detector lying on your palm like this for about 10 seconds, so that the device adjusts to your body temperature. The longer you hold the device, the more accurate the test result.
  2. Press the button on the back of the lie detector to start it (see Figure 2). While the light flashes, state your name and your age. This allows the lie detector to measure your "normal state". As soon as the device is ready, you will hear a continuous hum.
  3. When the hum starts, you have 10 seconds to repeat your answer. One of your fellow players will guide you by saying: "Repeat after me: ...". For example — Challenger: "Repeat after me: I have never danced naked in front of the mirror." Test subject: "I have never danced naked in front of the mirror."
  4. Once the answer has been spoken, the lie detector determines whether you are telling the truth or shamelessly lying to your fellow players.
  5. If you told the truth, the display shows the green symbol and you hear a confirmation sound. You may now take a game ring corresponding to your answer.
  6. If you lied, the display shows the red symbol and you hear a confirmation sound. Your fellow players now choose one of your game rings to take away from you, and return it to the other game rings.

Note: once the lie detector has been started, it indicates the test subject's stress level through a series of different sounds. The rule here is: the higher the pitch, the greater the stress. If you want to outwit the lie detector, you must try to remain as calm as possible.

If your fellow players are cruel enough, they may leave you dangling under the device for a while to find out how high your stress level rises!

Objection!

Some people are so cool that not even a lie detector can see through them. So if you doubt the result of the lie detector, you have the option of raising an objection against it.

  • If a player wants to raise an objection, all players first vote on it (the majority wins). In a tie, the player who read out the question has the last word. If that player is the one at the lie detector, the player sitting to his or her left makes the decision instead.
  • If the objection is approved by vote, the result of the lie detector is considered rejected! The player who was exposed as a liar now has one of his or her game rings taken away.
  • The objection card played is then removed from the game and set aside.
  • Each objection card can only be used once, and there are very few of them. Think carefully about whether it is really necessary.

Confess Everything!

If one of your fellow players has admitted to an act that you find extremely spicy, you may torment them further with your interrogation card. Play your interrogation card immediately after the player has answered the question positively, and demand that they disclose every detail of their sin.

You may play your interrogation card at any time, but only once during the game.

If this card is played against you, you have a choice: either go along with it and make a clean breast of everything, or voluntarily give back one of your game rings (the player who interrogated you may choose which one).

All played interrogation cards are removed from the game.

Who Wins?

The first player to collect either seven halos or seven devil's horns wins the game. Congratulations! You have either always told the truth or mercilessly fooled your fellow players...

Troubleshooting

Reset button: pressing this button restarts the lie detector at any time.

If the lie detector repeatedly gives incorrect results, replace the used batteries with new ones.

Quick Rules

  • The players each roll the die in turn to determine whether a [single-player or group game] is played.
  • If you roll a single-player game, [only] you must answer the question. Your fellow players decide whether you are lying in your answer and must take the lie detector test.
  • If you roll a group game, all players must answer the question. Then one player is selected from the group to take the lie detector test.
  • If the question is answered negatively ("I have never..."), the player receives a halo.
  • If the question is answered positively ("I have already..."), the player receives a ring of devil's horns.
  • If the lie detector determines that you are telling the truth, you may take a game ring corresponding to your answer.
  • If the lie detector determines that you are telling a lie, one of your game rings is taken away.
  • Remember that an objection can be raised against the result of the lie detector!
  • The first player who collects seven game rings of one kind, and thereby becomes a saint or outs themselves as a devil's brat, wins the game!

Figures 1 (inserting the batteries) and 2 (holding the lie detector and pressing the start button) from the printed manual are not reproduced here.
