Special Rules

You may play USS Constitution without these cards, add the crew cards, and/or add one of the two captains. If you add a captain, all the abilities listed on the Captain card may be used during the battle.

If you add abilities to this ship, we recommend also allowing your opponent to add a similar number of abilities to their ships, to preserve the balance of the game. You may also balance the game using our points-value system (visit www.aresgames.eu/downloads to download it).

A special ability that can only be used with the Standard rules is marked with two of the star-burst symbols. If it can only be used with the Advanced rules, it is marked with three of them.

If an ability can only be used once per game, discard the card when it is used.

If an ability can be used twice per game, turn the card sideways as a reminder that it has been used once, and discard it when it is used the second time.

Captain Wounds

After a ship has filled half of the crew casualty boxes on its Crew track, the ship's captain may be wounded.

On any turn when at least one crew casualty is taken, at the end of the Combat phase, draw four damage tokens to determine what happens to the ship's captain.

  • If three of the tokens show a crew casualty symbol, the captain is wounded.
  • If all four tokens show a crew casualty symbol, the captain is dead.
  • In any other case, there is no effect.

Mix the tokens back with the unused ones, without assigning any damage to the ship.

If the captain is wounded, the abilities marked with the captain icon (a tricorn hat) are affected:

  • If the captain has one or more abilities that can be used twice per game, and none of them have ever been used, consider all of them as having been used once. Any ability that has been used once is discarded.
  • If the captain has no abilities that can be used twice, the player must discard one of his unused abilities.

A wounded captain who is wounded again is considered dead.

If the captain is dead, any ability marked with the captain icon is discarded immediately.

Notes on the Translation

  • The source prints the captain's name as "William Baingridge"; the historical name is William Bainbridge. It is transcribed here as printed.
  • The star-burst and captain-hat icons, and the damage-token and crew-casualty icons, are described in words because the source shows them only as pictograms.
