Game Board

Rush M.D. - Maternity & Dental Clinics comes with an additional game board that you can include in your games and represents the Hospital's Maternity & Dental Clinics. The Maternity & Dental Clinics game board features two additional Action slots on which players can place Hourglasses to perform new Actions. Based on your player count and table space, you can set up this new game board, along with the rest of them, in any way you prefer to maximize your gameplay potential.

Tooth Tokens & Mouth Tile

The Tooth tokens and the Mouth tile are used to provide care to Regular Patients with Dental Signs.

Dental Treatment Tokens

The Dental Treatment tokens are used not only to signify that Patients with Dental Signs have received the proper dental care, but also to determine the subsequent Treatment they need.

Each Dental Treatment token has a Front Side and a Back Side.

Baby Tokens

Each Baby token has a Front Side and a Back Side. Accidentally switching Baby tokens at birth would seriously impact your Medical Points.

"It's a Girl!" & "It's a Boy!" Tokens

"It's a Girl!" and "It's a Boy!" tokens are merely used to respectively signify the biological female sex and the biological male sex of the fetus. Performing a Prenatal Ultrasound will allow for visually determining the biological sex of the developing fetuses.

5. How to Play

Action Phase

New Actions are now available during the Action Phase:

Dental Clinic

This is where preventive or urgent dental care is provided, dental procedures of all kinds take place and the proper follow-up treatment is determined for dental patients.

In Dental Clinic you may use your Doctor Hourglass to perform a Dental Exam on Dental Patients admitted in the Outpatient Clinic (Regular Patients), in order to find out how to treat them.

IMPORTANT: Dental Patient cards must remain in the Outpatient Clinic.

Dental Patients do not require assistance to move from one Clinic to another. Therefore, there is no need for you to pick up the chosen Dental Patient card and place it on the Dental Clinic in order to provide them with the appropriate dental care.

A Patient with a Dental Sign needs to have a Dental Exam.

Dental Exam: With this Action, you perform a Dental Exam to one of the Dental Patients in the Outpatient Clinic. To do so, take all 6 Tooth tokens and roll them like dice close to the Mouth tile. Each Tooth token has one side that is darker. Using a pair of Tweezers you must fill all the slots of the Mouth tile with the Tooth tokens, making sure, however, that the darker side of each Tooth token is facing down. Once you successfully complete the Exam process, you may draw the top Dental Treatment token and place it face-up on top of that Patient's card.

NOTE: Additional Treatment depicted on the front side of the Dental Treatment token must be considered as an inherent part of the Treatment listed on the card of the Dental Patient the token has been assigned to. The Treatment must be offered to the Dental Patient by performing, as usual, the Treat a Regular Patient Action at the Outpatient Clinic.

Using a pair of Tweezers, insert each Tooth token on the slots of the Mouth tile, making sure that the darker side of each Tooth token is facing down.

Following the Dental Exam, Dental Patients must be provided with additional Medication by either a Nurse or a Doctor Hourglass at the Outpatient Clinic.

Maternity Clinic

This is where maternity patients are examined and receive the appropriate care throughout the prenatal and postnatal period; from the very beginning of their pregnancy, through childbirth and to the short period following that.

In Maternity Clinic you may use your Doctor Hourglass to monitor and evaluate the progress of the labor (Hospitalized Patients) or determine the biological sex of the fetus (Regular Patients) of Maternity Patients.

The 2 types of Exam are the following:

A Hospitalized Patient with a Maternity Sign needs Labor Monitoring.

IMPORTANT: Before performing the Labor Monitoring Action, you must first move the Hospitalized Maternity Patient, along with the Ward Bed that she is lying in, to the designated area of the Maternity Clinic.

Labor Monitoring: With this Action you monitor the labor of the Patient placed in the Labor Monitoring area of the Maternity Clinic. Each Labor Monitoring card's back features several Brown and several White Teddy Bears. You must locate a Labor Monitoring card that features a majority of Teddy Bears sharing the same color with the one depicted on the card of the Maternity Patient being examined. To do so, look at the Teddy Bear icon shown on the front top right corner of the Maternity Patient card and then count the Teddy Bears at the back of the top card of the Labor Monitoring deck. If the top card does not feature a majority of Teddy Bears sharing the same color with the one depicted on the card of the Maternity Patient being examined, put it on the bottom of the deck and look at the new top card. Repeat this process until you find a card that does feature such a majority on it, and place it face-up on the Patient's Treatment area, in their Ward. You may then move that Patient away from the Labor Monitoring area (even if the sand in the Doctor Hourglass is still running), as the Labor Monitoring has been successfully concluded and the Patient is ready for Delivery.

Example: Look at the top card of the Labor Monitoring deck and count the Teddy Bears depicted. This Labor Monitoring card features 7 Brown Teddy Bears and 6 White Teddy Bears. Therefore, it should be assigned to a Maternity Patient depicting a Brown Teddy Bear.

NOTE: If by mistake you reveal a Labor Monitoring card depicting on its front side a Teddy Bear of different color than the one depicted on the card of the Maternity Patient being examined, you must return that card to the bottom of the deck and the entire Action must be performed once again. If the sand in the Hourglass is still running, you must wait for it to run out and then start all over.

NOTE: If any Labor Monitoring card you draw for a Patient features the Critical Condition symbol, you must immediately indicate the change in the Patient's Condition by taking a Condition token, turning it to the Critical side and placing it into the Patient's Bed. Then, you must return that card to the bottom of the deck before continuing with the Exam process. Drawing a Pregnancy Complications card neither interrupts nor successfully completes the Labor Monitoring Action.

A Regular Patient with a Maternity Sign needs to have a Prenatal Ultrasound.

IMPORTANT: Regular Maternity Patient cards must remain in the Outpatient Clinic.

Prenatal Ultrasound: With this Action you perform a Prenatal Ultrasound to one of the Maternity Patients in the Outpatient Clinic. Each Prenatal Ultrasound card's back features 1 (single pregnancy) or 2 (twin pregnancy) symbols which are illegible to the naked eye and represent the biological sex of the fetuses. You must identify those symbols and determine the biological sex of each fetus of the Maternity Patient being examined. To do so, take the Ultrasound token, place it on top of the Prenatal Ultrasound deck and search the top card for any symbol representing the biological sex of the fetus, using the Ultrasound token to reveal them. Once you locate and identify one such symbol, you must take an "It's a Girl!" and/or "It's a Boy!" token matching the symbol you identified on the back of the Prenatal Ultrasound card and place it on top of the Patient's card. Continue searching the card for another symbol and repeat the process, until you feel certain enough that you didn't miss any other symbol and you ruled out the possibility of a twin pregnancy. Then, without flipping and checking the front side of the top Prenatal Ultrasound card, place it face-down partially under the Patient's card. You are going to Verify Ultrasound Interpretation during the subsequent Patient Evaluation Phase.

Using the Ultrasound token, look at the top card of the Prenatal Ultrasound deck and locate the symbol(s) representing the biological sex of the fetus(es). Each Prenatal Ultrasound card features 1 (single pregnancy) or 2 (twin pregnancy) such symbols.

"It's a Girl!" and "It's a Boy!" tokens are merely used to respectively signify the biological female sex and the biological male sex of the fetus.

Operating Room A & B

In several cases, medical reasons dictate that a Caesarean section must be performed; a surgical procedure by which a baby is delivered.

Following a successfully completed Labor Monitoring Action, you have to move the Hospitalized Maternity Patient, along with the Ward Bed that she is lying in, to one of the Operating Rooms and perform the following Action:

Delivery: Using a Doctor Hourglass, you may deliver babies. To do so, look at the Baby icon depicted on that Patient's Labor Monitoring card. Flipping Baby tokens one at a time, try to locate the same Baby. Each token must be flipped face-down again before another one is revealed. As soon as you locate the same Baby, place that Baby token face-up into the Patient's Bed. If the Patient is giving birth to twins, immediately repeat the process as part of the same Action.

IMPORTANT: Within the Operating Room, Baby tokens must always be handled with your bare hands, in contrast to all Medication, Blood and Organs which may only be handled using a pair of Tweezers.

One at a time, flip over the Baby tokens until you reveal the one(s) depicted on the Hospitalized Maternity Patient's Labor Monitoring card.

Patient Evaluation Phase

During Patient Evaluation Phase, additionally perform the following two checks before proceeding to the Evaluating Patients step:

Verifying Ultrasound Interpretation: Flip any Prenatal Ultrasound cards assigned to Maternity Patients. Check if you successfully determined the biological sex of each fetus by comparing each symbol on the front side of their Prenatal Ultrasound card with the symbol of any "It's a Girl!" and/or "It's a Boy!" tokens placed on top of the Maternity Patient's card.

If you correctly placed all the tokens depicted, and only these, you gain the Reputation Point listed on the Prenatal Ultrasound card.

If you placed more, less or different tokens than depicted, you lose 1 Medical Point and you do not gain the Reputation Point listed on the Prenatal Ultrasound card. Also, you must immediately place on top of the Maternity Patient's card the correct token(s) and return any wrong one.

In either case, "It's a Boy!" and/or "It's a Girl!" tokens remain on top of the Maternity Patient's card and the Prenatal Ultrasound card returns to the bottom of its respective deck. As long as the Maternity Patient has been otherwise successfully treated (i.e., received the indicated Medication), she will be found ready to be discharged during the subsequent Evaluating Patients step.

Newborn Identification Protocol: Check if you assigned the correct Babies to each Maternity Patient by comparing the Baby icon on the front side of their Labor Monitoring card with each Baby token placed on top of the Maternity Patient's card.

If you correctly placed all the Baby tokens depicted, and only these, you gain the Reputation Point listed on the Prenatal Ultrasound card. (Source note: the printed rulebook names the Prenatal Ultrasound card in this sentence, while the next paragraph names the Labor Monitoring card for the same Reputation Point. Reproduced as printed.)

If you placed more, less or different Baby tokens than depicted, you lose 3 Medical Points and you do not gain the Reputation Point listed on the Labor Monitoring card. Also, you must immediately place on top of the Maternity Patient's card the correct Baby token(s) and return any wrong one.

In either case, Baby tokens remain on top of the Maternity Patient's card and the Labor Monitoring card returns to the bottom of its respective deck. As long as the Maternity Patient has been otherwise successfully treated (i.e., received the indicated Medication), she will be found ready to be discharged during the subsequent Evaluating Patients step.

IMPORTANT: When it comes to Evaluating Patients, Dental Treatment tokens assigned to Dental Patients must be considered as an inherent part of the Patient cards.

NOTE: When Discharging Patients, return any Dental Treatment tokens to the bottom of the corresponding pile, return any "It's a Girl!" and "It's a Boy!" tokens on their designated area on the Maternity & Dental Clinics game board and return any Baby tokens face-down next to the Operating Rooms game board.
