Object of the Game

To be the first Explorer to reach the treasure of the Golden Monkey and release it from its secret hiding place.

Before Play

Practice turning the crank and testing the traps, to ensure all parts are assembled correctly. Remember it takes a skilled adventurer to successfully master the Wheel of Doom and the seven treacherous traps.

How to Play

Each player chooses an Explorer and places it on the Base Camp start space.

The youngest player goes first and play continues clockwise. Make sure you remember your colour. Players take it in turns to roll the dice and move their own Explorer or an opponent's forward the number of spaces shown on the dice, following the instructions on the gameboard.

Moving an Opponent's Explorer

After rolling the dice a player can choose to move an opponent's Explorer forwards only instead of moving their own Explorer. This can help to keep their Explorer out of trouble and put another player's Explorer in danger! A player can also choose not to move.

Spaces

Spaces are marked on both the board and the plastic pieces. Each space on a plastic piece is indicated by a pair of footprints.

Occupied Spaces

Only one Explorer can occupy a space. If a space is already occupied then a player must jump to the next available space.

Crank Spaces

If a player lands on a crank space they must turn the Wheel of Doom (anti-clockwise only) the number of "clicks" shown on the game board. This may send a boulder down the track. If the boulder leaves the track it must be put back into play at the base of the Wheel of Doom. If the boulder doesn't drop into the hole on the Elephant Pass (ready to be picked up by a bucket) just gently roll it into place.

The 7 Hazard Spaces

The Giraffe Watering Hole, Rickety Bridge, Snake Pit, Elephant Pass, Wheel of Doom, Monkey See-Saw and the top of the Pagoda Steps have all been made by the Monkeys to try and prevent the Explorers from getting to the Golden Monkey.

Landing on a Hazard Space

If an Explorer lands on a hazard space they must stand on the pair of footprints indicated. If they are knocked off they must go back to the start at the Base Camp.

Important: Only the Explorer on the TOP step of the Pagoda Steps goes back to the Base Camp when knocked off. If any of the other Explorers are knocked off they should be put back on their original step.

Re-setting the Giraffe Watering Hole and Monkey See-Saw Hazards

Each time a boulder activates these hazards they need re-setting immediately:

  1. Put the Monkey See-Saw back in place and put the Monkey back on the Palm Tree leaf.
  2. Lift up the Giraffe's neck to reset the mechanism.

Pagoda Steps and Pagoda Tree

A player must roll the exact number on the dice to land on the Final Footprint Space on the leaves at the top of the Pagoda Tree (fig 8).

This is the space where an Explorer will divert the boulder round the back of the Pagoda, through the hole in the leaves and down onto the "secret catch", to release the Golden Monkey Statue from its hiding place inside the Pagoda.

If a player is on the Pagoda Steps and rolls the dice but can't move, or doesn't want to move, they can still move an opponent's Explorer OR crank the Wheel of Doom anti-clockwise the number of "clicks" as shown on their dice roll.

Winning the Game

The winner is the first player to reach the Final Footprint space (fig 8). If you are the first to arrive, place your Explorer on the Final Footprint Space and turn the Wheel of Doom until the next boulder is released. It will now roll around the pagoda and release the Golden Monkey.

Packing Away the Game

Simply remove the plastic pieces in reverse order to "Setting up the game" – starting with the last piece first and then fold up the gameboard.

Editor's Notes

  • The leaflet's assembly steps (Steps 1–15, figures 1–7 and the "Setting up the game" section) are not rules and are not transcribed here.
  • The product safety warnings and manufacturer address block printed on the leaflet are not rules and are omitted.
  • The printed heading "THE 7 HAZARD SPACES" appears twice in the leaflet's layout; it is transcribed once above.
