Objective of the Game
The objective is simple: to be the only person left at the table. Each person must manage both the revolver chips and their own 3 chips, which are, at the same time, skills to stay in the game and the lives they must maintain to avoid being knocked out of the match.
Game Setup
Deal 3 basic skill chips of each type to each person. These are: Flip, Reorder, and Change of Turn. These three chips will sit face up in front of each person, visible to everyone.
The advanced skills will be explained later in the advanced game mode; for now they stay in the box.
Shuffle the 8 revolver chips and stack them face down in the center of the table, within reach of all participants. In the stack you will find one BANG! chip and seven CLICK chips. Look each other in the eyes with a furrowed brow... Russian roulette begins.
How to Play
The most impulsive person starts play — that is, whoever is first to lift the top chip from the revolver stack, placing it face up in the center of the table, next to the revolver stack. If nobody decides, a person is chosen at random.
If that person does not reveal a BANG! chip, the turn passes to the person on their left. If it is a BANG! chip, they must turn one of their own skill chips face down.
The next person, and everyone else in their turn from then on, may choose between the following two options:
- Option 1: Use one of their skill chips.
- Option 2: Reveal the top chip of the revolver stack.
Option 1. Use One of the Skill Chips
As stated in game setup, each person has 3 skill chips available. Each time a chip is used it must be turned face down to activate its skill, and it is no longer available — chips must be face up in order to be used. The skill chips are as follows:
- Flip: Lets the person whose turn it is turn face down a chip belonging to another person. It cannot be used if the rest of that person's skill chips are already face down.
- Reorder: The person who uses it may look at and reorder the revolver stack's chips as they wish. Afterward, they place the stack back in the center of the table. This skill cannot be used if there is only one chip left in the revolver stack.
- Change of Turn: The person who uses this chip immediately chooses another person and gives them the turn. Play then continues clockwise starting from this newly chosen person.
If a person has all 3 of their skill chips face down, they cannot use them and must reveal a chip from the revolver stack instead (see Option 2).
Option 2: Reveal the Top Chip of the Revolver Stack
The person whose turn it is reveals the top chip of the revolver stack. Two things can happen:
- If a CLICK chip is revealed, they have been lucky. The chip is placed face up next to the revolver stack, on the discard pile. In addition, the person may turn one of their skill chips face up (whichever one they want), if they had any face down.
- If the BANG! chip is revealed, the person whose turn it is returns one of their face-up skill chips to the box. Afterward, that person remakes the revolver stack with the 8 chips and places it face down in the center of the table in whatever order they like. Afterward, they pass the turn to the person on their left.
If, upon revealing a BANG! chip, the person has no chip face up, or has no chips at all, that person is eliminated.
The eliminated person, as in the previous case, arranges the 8 revolver chips as they choose and forms the new revolver stack in the center of the table, with play continuing with the person on their left.
All persons still in the game continue with the same skill-chip situation they had — that is, under no circumstances are the three skill chips reactivated as described in game setup.
Final Duel (games with 3 or more players)
When only two people remain playing at the table (because all others have been eliminated), the Final Duel situation occurs. In this case, the revolver stack chips are not arranged by the person eliminated immediately before only two people remain playing. Instead, that eliminated person shuffles the revolver stack with the 8 chips and places it in the center of the table. In addition, the two surviving people may turn face up all of the skill chips they have remaining.
The Final Duel is started by the person seated to the left of the person who was just eliminated.
End of the Game
After the Duel, the game ends when one of the two remaining people is eliminated. The person left standing wins the game.
Use of Advanced Chips
In Ruleta Rusa, you additionally have other skill chips that can be used by substituting them for some of the basic chips. You can deal them out at random or have each person choose one at a time. A person cannot have the same skill two or more times in their play area. This gives each participant an asymmetric profile, giving the game greater strategic depth.
The advanced skill chips are:
- Look: The person whose turn it is may look at the top chip of the revolver stack and decide whether to leave it there or place it at the bottom of the revolver stack. This skill cannot be used if there is only one chip left in the revolver stack.
- Change of Direction: The direction of play is reversed. The game proceeds counterclockwise, with the next turn going to the person seated to the right of whoever used this chip.
- Double Shot: Once this chip is played, the next person who decides to reveal a chip from the revolver stack must reveal two chips from the revolver stack. No other person may use another X2 chip until the played X2 chip has been resolved, but another chip may be played to get rid of this effect. This skill cannot be used if there is only one chip left in the revolver stack.
