Setup
During setup, follow the normal rules, except for the following changes:
-
Place the holiday mood track next to the Problems deck.
-
Choose any New Year decor token and place it on the "Start" space of the holiday mood track. Until the end of the game, use this token as the marker.
In most cases the New Year decor tokens do not take part in the game as game elements, but they can (and should!) be used to decorate the Scene cards artistically.
-
Shuffle all the Gift cards and place the resulting deck face down next to the game board. Each player takes 1 Gift card, without showing it to the other players.
-
Add the new Idea cards to the corresponding deck. Place the new Equipment card face up next to the game board. It has a special space where a die may be placed. After you remove the die following the action, you must turn the card face down.
-
Add 3 Christmas Spirit cards to the Problems deck and shuffle all the cards.
-
Use the Scene and Script cards from this box. You may add to them Scene or Script cards of the corresponding type from the base game and/or other expansions.
Holiday Mood Track
The New Year holidays are a special time, so it is important that the film set has a festive mood.
During play, the holiday mood will change: it worsens because of various problems and improves thanks to the gifts that crew members exchange. All changes to the holiday mood are shown on the special track.
- Move the holiday mood marker down by the indicated number of spaces.
- Move the holiday mood marker up by the indicated number of spaces.
The holiday mood marker can never go beyond the holiday mood track.
Worsening the Holiday Mood
Each turn, when you take a Problem card (step 1), move the holiday mood marker down 1 space for each card in the Problem area.
The sheet repeats this rule as a banner, "Each turn after step 1:", showing the holiday mood marker moving down next to a Problem card icon.
Christmas Spirits
The Christmas Spirit cards refer to Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol in Prose". As in the story, the spirits will suddenly appear to members of your film crew.
If you draw a Christmas Spirit card from the Problems deck, place it next to the game board and immediately apply the effect indicated on it.
A Christmas Spirit is not simply a problem, so it cannot be ignored or "smoothed over". Once you have fully applied the effect of a Christmas Spirit card, return it to the box.
New Action: Wrap a Gift
To take the top card of the Gift deck, take any die that has not yet been used to perform an action, and place it next to the deck.
You may perform this action several times per turn and, accordingly, receive several Gift cards.
Do not show the received Gift cards to other players, so as not to spoil the surprise.
The number of Gift cards in your hand is not limited.
You cannot wrap a gift if the Gift deck is empty.
Giving Gifts
At any moment when you are not the active player, you may give the active player a Gift card from your hand.
Upon receiving a gift, immediately move the holiday mood marker up by the number of spaces shown on the card.
Then you may apply the effect of this Gift card.
After that, move the card face up to the discard pile next to the Gift deck.
When playing solo, you may use Gift cards received in previous turns. Treat yourself!
Special Effects
While the holiday mood marker is on one of the following spaces, apply the special effect described below.
- Gold bauble space: Upon completing filming of a scene, additionally gain 1 Audience Appeal point.
- Angry red bauble space (first): The VFX symbol is no longer universal.
- Angry red bauble space (second): The VFX symbol is no longer universal, AND upon completing filming of any scene, additionally reduce your budget by $1.
Icon note: the sheet shows these effects only as pictures. The VFX symbol is drawn as a white starburst; a cross beside it, with a blue box marked "?", stands for the symbol losing its universal (wild) status, which the printed text states as "the symbol is no longer universal". The bauble, scene and star icons are read from the printed effect text above. The snow globe, candy cane, gingerbread figure and ghost illustrations on the sheet are decoration and carry no rule.
