Overview of Play

Each of the three festival years (seasons) is divided into three phases:

  1. Booking phase: Each player books bands for his festival. Depending on the musical genre and the fame of the respective band, fans buy festival tickets. It is also necessary to build stands and upgrades on the festival grounds.
  2. Festival phase: After the preparations, the hard work begins. Day by day, new fans trickle in. Depending on which genres the bands play, fans from the most varied scenes and subcultures travel in. And this is exactly where the trouble begins! The "Hippie" wants to park his VW bus in the car park, the "Punker" does not want to camp next to the Reggae fans, and the "Heavy Metaller" prefers to keep to himself. Moreover, all arriving fans increase the Chaos or the demands on Hygiene. Once all have arrived, the fan figures are placed on stands, WIXI toilets or in front of the stage. At the end of each day, the Chaos and Hygiene values are compared, and the Mood and Satisfaction are adjusted. For example, Mood is lowered and/or garbage heaps are placed.
  3. Scoring: At the end of each festival year (season), the balance is drawn up to see whether the three-day madness was worth it. Depending on the success of the festival, victory points are awarded by the "Official Open-Air Rating Agency" (short: O.O.R.A.). Finally, the money bags are opened and counted. Now it becomes clear whether, after deducting all the expenses, a few toads are still left over.

Genre key (the four musical directions in Rock'n Rodeo): Punkrock, Metal, Reggae, Indie.

Game Material

Festival game boards: 4 festival boards (1 board per player), the centre of each festival.

Band cards: 32 different band cards, divided by fame (Garagenbands, Local Heroes, Superstars and Rocklegenden). Each shows its name (Name), its genre and number of fans (Genre und Anzahl Fans), its fee (Gage, e.g. 4K) and its fame (Berühmtheit, shown by stars). Each band card also has a quote. The "Bandkarte" (band card) of the Local Hero type has spaces for fans ("Felder für Fans").

Fan cards: 48 fan cards of the genres Punkrock, Metal, Reggae and Indie. Each card shows a group of fans belonging to a particular scene/subculture, its name, its purchasing power (Kaufkraft), its requirements (Anforderungen), its genre, and its Chaos / Hygiene values.

Fan figures (Fans): 69 fan figures made of wood (wooden blocks). A figure represents an entire horde of fans. For simplicity, however, one speaks further only of fans or fan figures.

Camping markers: 69 camping markers made of cardboard. The tents and campers of the fans are represented by the camping markers. For each fan who arrives, a camping marker is also placed. These double-sided markers show the satisfaction of the fans. If the marker lies with the front side up, the fan is satisfied (thumbs up); if it lies with the reverse side up, the fan is dissatisfied (thumbs down).

Stands and upgrades: 26 stands and 16 upgrades (different reverse sides: upgrades, starting stands and stands). The starting stands are used at the start of the game; the other stands can be bought later. Each stand shows its name (Name), its "Felder für Fans" (spaces for fans), its type (Art), and its income/bonus (Einnahmen/Bonus).

Event cards / festival cards: 20 event cards, each with one side for the Booking phase and one side for the Festival phase (left). 7 festival cards for individual scoring conditions (right).

Campsite: 20 double-sided campsite cards. Each has 4 spaces on which the arriving fans can set up their tents/campers. There are tent-site cards (Zeltplatzkarten), car-park cards (Parkplatzkarten), and mixed tent/car-park cards. Each pure tent-site card has a Dreckhaufen (dirt heap).

Scoring track (Wertungstafel): Victory points for every player are counted on the scoring track. The playing order is also set and shown here.

Other components: 4 festival overviews, 13 WIXI toilets, 4 x 5 wooden blocks in the player colours, 12 garbage markers (brown wooden blocks).

Money: Money notes: 15 x 1K-Euro, 15 x 3K-Euro and 10 x 5K-Euro.

Basic Course for Festival Planners

Managing festivals has to be learned. For this reason we begin at this point with an introduction to the most important tasks of an organiser.

In these yellow boxes example situations are shown, to consolidate what has been learned with practical examples.

NOTE: No master has fallen from the sky yet. The first game should be seen as an introductory game, since the individual connections only become completely clear once they have been put into practice. In the introductory game two festival years are sufficient.

In the orange fields detailed and special guidelines for festival management are presented. For the beginner version these rules may initially be ignored, since the aim is to grasp the basic game mechanics.

The beginner version of the rules is explained in more detail on page 15. It is recommended for players who do not regularly play complex board games. If you want to play the beginner version, look at page 15 first.

Basic Course

Order of Play

Since the playing order is not insignificant for the possibilities of action, there is the order track. At the start, positions are assigned randomly; later, the positions depend on the victory points. The managers who are behind are the first to act, so they get the chance to catch up. During booking, the players with the higher number begin first; in the festival phase, those with the lower number go first.

Status

The status tokens represent the "life" of the festival, so to speak: the mood of the visitors, the degree of escalation, and also the cleanliness of the festival grounds are represented. These are Chaos, Hygiene, Mood (Stimmung) and Satisfaction (Zufriedenheit).

Chaos (track): The Chaos track shows the order on the festival grounds. From a peaceful gathering of young people playing guitars (0) to an uncontrollable heap of drunken lowlifes who wreck the tents (8), with the anarchy (8) anything is possible. The position of the Chaos marker indicates how much garbage is produced on the grounds.

Hygiene (track): Many fans have certain demands on hygiene. The coverage of these demands is shown on the hygiene track. At the start, the demand for hygiene is covered (+3 to +1, depending on the number of WIXI toilets). The more the demands on hygiene rise, the further the marker moves into the negative range. At first the fans react with bad mood and dissatisfaction, but at some point they have had enough and leave.

Satisfaction (Zufriedenheit): The fans on the campsite are either satisfied (thumbs up) or dissatisfied (thumbs down). Satisfaction affects the mood and the hygiene. Satisfied Punkrockers (1st from left) and dissatisfied Reggae fans (2nd from left) are shown as examples.

Mood (Stimmung): Mood is sometimes the most important quantity for evaluating the festival. The mood track shows how good the mood on the festival grounds is. Mood can be influenced by the bands, by satisfaction and by event cards, and by poor hygiene.

Example 1: Festival status. The festival of the green player currently has a Mood of 5. Its Chaos value stands at 4. Since the garbage bin on space 3 was exceeded during each festival day, one garbage marker is produced per festival day. The hygiene demands are currently unmet by -3.

Basic Course (continued)

Setup

First, the band, event and fan cards are sorted by their reverse sides, shuffled, and placed at the edge of the playing area. All markers are laid out within easy reach.

The upgrades Einlass (entrance), Müllpfand (garbage deposit), Security and Duschen (showers) are laid out in open stacks.

All other stands (not the starting stands) are shuffled and laid out face up in three open stacks.

Briefing, and then off we go. Each player now draws a festival card and lays it face up in front of him. This card states which festival the players have been assigned by their management. The card shows the name of the festival, the festival grounds, the first stands and an individual victory condition. The numbers on the campsite indicate in which season which campsite cards are available.

Set up the fence. Each player takes a festival board and arranges around it the campsite cards and stands shown on the festival card. The numbers on the festival card indicate in which festival season which campsite cards are added. At first, each player has three campsite cards (season 1). These are to be placed as indicated on the festival card. The position of the dirt spaces may be freely chosen by the player. The festival board, the campsite cards and the stands together form the festival grounds of the respective player. (The stands are found under the starting stands; after setup these are returned to the box.)

Each player chooses one of the available colours (green, yellow, orange or purple) and places the corresponding wooden cubes on his festival board and on the general scoring track (all on 0). Each player receives 8K Euro as budget, as well as four event cards.

The card "Anzahl der Fans" (number of fans) with the corresponding number of players is placed at the side. The number of fan figures per genre given on this card is placed next to the respective fan cards. These figures are the fans who wish to buy a ticket for a festival this year: the "available fans".

Setup example (3 players): the table on the card lists the available fans per genre by season:

3 playersPunkrock (red)Metal (black)Reggae (green)Indie (blue)
Season 19776
Season 211998
Season 314111110

Example note on the card: in the first season, 9 Punkrocker (red), 7 Metalheads (black), 7 Reggaefans (green) and 6 Indiefans (blue) are placed.

Who begins? (Starting player) The player who most recently visited a festival places his marker on position one of the order track on the scoring track. The remaining positions are distributed in clockwise order, ascending. Example: Peter gets 1, his left-hand neighbour gets 2, and so on.

Phase 1 - Booking

In Phase 1, "Booking", each player assembles a line-up of 3 bands, buys new stands and/or upgrades and plans the festival schedule.

Order in the booking phase. In the booking phase there are three booking rounds in total. In the first booking round the player with the highest number on the order track begins. The remaining players follow in descending order. In the second booking round the player with the second-highest number begins; in the third booking round the player with the third-highest number begins.

Number and type of band cards (table, 4 players): the number of band cards revealed for each booking round is shown on the table on the card: season 1: 5 x Local Hero; season 2: 4 x Local Hero and 1 x Superstar; season 3: 3 x Local Hero, 1 x Superstar and 1 x Legend. For example, in season 2 four Local Heroes and one Superstar band card are revealed in each booking round.

Revealing cards. On the back of the card "Available fans" it is stated in which festival season how many cards from the various stacks of band cards are revealed (see above).

Booking - the first booking round. At the start of the first booking round the band cards are revealed face up for everyone to see. The player whose order-track marker is highest (with 4 players, the number 4) begins. The following four steps are carried out:

1. Book a band. The player picks one of the band cards on display, pays the stated fee (Gage) and places the band card in front of his festival grounds.

Orange box (booking rule): If the player no longer has money or does not want to spend any, he may take a free Garagenband (a star-rated garage band) from the stack. It has only a single fan (a friend of the band). As soon as the player takes a garage band, he immediately takes 1K Euro. Reason: the band has to take more tickets than it can itself sell. Each player may book at most one Rocklegende (four-star Legend) per festival season.

2. Draw fan card(s). For each genre symbol on the band card, the player may draw a fan card of the corresponding genre. For the symbol shown as a wildcard, he may draw a fan card of any genre.

3. Play an event card. The player may either:

  • A) play an event card with the Booking side, OR
  • B) discard an event card and draw a new one in its place.

The event cards are described in more detail in the appendix.

4. Take fans. The player takes the number of fan figures shown on the band card (hereinafter simply "fans"). For the wildcard symbol he must take fans of the genre from which he has also drawn the fan card, i.e. he may not mix. It may well happen that all "available fans" of the corresponding genre have already been taken.

Example 2: Booking has to be learned. Jens has booked the band "Die Dorks" for 4K Euro. He takes a Punkrock fan card and decides on a further Metal fan card. He then takes two Punkrock fans (red) and, because he drew a Metal fan card, two Metal fans (black).

Further Course of the Booking Phase

After the first player has booked a band (and taken fan groups and fans), each player carries out the four steps described under Phase 1 - Booking one after another.

Second and third booking rounds. A second and a third booking round take place, so that at the end each player has 3 bands lying next to his festival grounds. Before each booking round new band cards are revealed (according to the card, see page 6). All Local Hero band cards still left over from the previous round remain in place and may continue to be booked. All other band cards still on display are discarded. The player with the second-highest order number begins in the second round, and the player with the third-highest in the third round.

3rd booking roundPlayer 2 beginsPlayer 1 beginsPlayer 2 begins

(Table as printed: "Es beginnt Spieler ..." for each round by player count.)

Once each player has three band cards, the booking phase is over and the expansion begins.

Insolvency: If a player no longer has enough money to book bands and cannot take a free Garagenband either, because none is available, then he has set a historic record of incompetence on that day. He must hold a two-day festival this year. On the third day this player must pass, although he may still receive further garbage, mood deductions and so on.

Expansion (Erweitern)

Beginning with the player with the highest number on the order track, each player may buy one upgrade and/or one stand and place it with his already existing stands.

Each expansion (upgrade or stand) costs 2K Euro. Each upgrade may be acquired only once. Only the uppermost, visible card of a stack may be bought at any time.

Orange box: This matters because the stands are divided into Fastfood, Getränke (drinks) and Sonstiges (other). The respective type of stand, in combination with the various fan groups, has certain advantages or disadvantages.

Line-Up Phase

The players now determine on which day which of their three bands plays. Next to the festival board, each manager has a marked space for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On each of these days he must place one of his band cards.

Orange box: When determining the line-up, close attention should be paid to the requirements of the fan groups which the player holds in hand. The Chaos and Hygiene values of the respective music genre must also be taken into account.

After the line-up has been determined, each player purchases WIXI toilets. There must be at least one and at most three toilets. (A discussion of why at least one WIXI toilet is needed at a rock festival is left out here.) The WIXI toilets are placed on any free spaces on the car park or campsite (but not on the dirt heap spaces).

Orange box: Since the dirt heap spaces may be in a different place every year, the players may turn the campsite cards in this phase as they wish; the layout on the festival card must nevertheless be kept.

Example 3: Setting up the festival grounds. This or something similar should now look like the festival grounds of each player. Two starting stands: in this case "Dönermann" and "Bierstand". Three campsite cards (corresponding to the respective festival card) and WIXI toilets. Band cards shown for Friday ("Die Dorks"), Saturday ("Motörkopf") and Sunday ("Soulspeed").

Phase 2 - Festival

In the festival phase the three days, Friday to Sunday, are played. Each day is divided into four times of day:

  1. The arrival (Vormittag, morning): New fans arrive at the festival and first want to find a campsite that suits their wishes.
  2. Event (Nachmittag, afternoon): To pass the time until the headliner (to be honest: nobody wants to attend the regional band contest), the fans occupy themselves with sporting events such as flunkyball or can-stomping. Unfortunately they also often come up with really stupid ideas.
  3. The band plays (Abend, evening): The headliner band plays. As is usually the case, not every band manages to reach the stage, and one or another gets stuck at the WIXI toilets or at the Bierstand.
  4. Status of the day (Nacht, night): After the last band the general state of the festival is checked: does the Chaos stay within limits, or does the organiser stand at sunrise in front of a pile of rubble?

In the festival phase, the player with the order marker on position 1 begins. He carries out the actions of the first time of day (in 99% of cases this should be the morning). Afterwards players two, three and, as last player, four follow. Only once all players have dealt with the current time of day does the next time of day begin. The same order is maintained here (player one, player two ...).

NOTE: In contrast to the booking phase, the order no longer changes during the festival phase. Each day and each time of day is begun by player one.

Beginning of the Festival Phase

At the start of the festival phase, a wooden cube marker is placed on the Chaos track and on the Mood track (start field 0). The Hygiene marker starts on the field showing the number of its WIXI toilets. For example, with two WIXI toilets the marker starts on +2.

1. The Arrival - Morning (Vormittag)

During the arrival phase the fans of today's band come to the campsite. For each arriving fan group (fan card) the arrival is handled in full before any further fan groups arrive.

The genre symbols on the band card of the current day show which musical genre the fan groups belong to. To the right of the genre symbol stands the number of fans belonging to this fan group (in the corresponding colour).

The player plays a matching fan card from his hand for each genre symbol on the band card. For this fan group he takes (according to the number of fans) camping markers of the respective genre and places them on the campsite. Placement on the campsite is subject to the following rules:

"It's filthy here" (Hier ists siffig): Voluntarily, nobody camps on the dirt spaces (Dreckfelder), of which each tent-site card has one. Only once the entire campsite is full may markers be distributed freely onto the dirt spaces. The rule "far forward" (below) no longer applies here. Nobody will want to pitch a tent in or on WIXI toilets, so camping markers may never be placed there.

"Far forward" (Weit nach vorne): Nobody wants to walk for ages to the stage. For this reason, camping markers may be placed in the rear rows only once the row in front is completely full (exception: dirt spaces).

"Not with the riffraff" (Nicht zu den Assis): This is the crux of the arrival. Each fan card has one or two requirements.

  • There are requirements about the location, i.e. a tent site (Zeltplatz) or the campsite (Campingplatz) icon. These state where the fans want to camp.
  • There are also requirements about the neighbours, i.e. next to which music genre the fan group wants to camp (icon) or next to which it does not want to camp (icon). Only directly adjacent camping markers count as neighbours; diagonals do not count as adjacent.
  • Only if all requirements are fulfilled is the camping marker turned to the front side, satisfied (thumbs up). In all other cases the fans (and therefore their camping markers) are dissatisfied (thumbs down).

Example 4: Arrival (part 1). For "Smalltown Conspiracy" a Metal and a Punk fan group are played. The player first decides on the Skater fan group. Since the only requirement, next to Punkrockers, is to camp loudly, the skaters can fulfil this requirement themselves (since they are punkers), and so both are satisfied. The Rockers are now played. They want to camp on the car park (Parkplatz) and not next to Punkrockers. Since the first row must be filled first, only one Rocker can be placed satisfied. The second camps either next to the Punkrockers (1) or not on a tent site (2).

1. The Arrival (continued) - Further Fans

The arrival is repeated until, for every symbol of the genre on the current day's band card, a matching fan card has been played and the corresponding camping markers (incl. fans) have been placed. The requirements of the fan groups only matter at the moment the card is played (see example 6).

Special cases that may occur:

A player no longer has as many fan figures as shown on the band card. As long as at least one fan of the corresponding genre is still available, the fan card is played and the remaining fans and camping markers are placed. If no corresponding fan is left, no fan card is played. In this way some fan cards in a player's hand may not be played during a season and thus lapse.

A player no longer has a matching fan card. If this is not noticed, it can happen that on Friday, for a music genre symbol, the player plays a Metal fan card although he had drawn a Reggae fan card earlier. Later he notices that this Metal fan card is missing. This is already a coarse blunder and is punished accordingly: for each card not played, as many dissatisfied camping markers as the number of fans (see band card) are placed on the campsite (but no fan figures). This penalty applies only if the player no longer has matching fan cards, and not if he has simply run out of fans.

The campsite is full and no more fans can arrive. The fans are stinking mad. For each fan who gets no place, a dissatisfied camping marker is placed next to the campsite (but no fan figure). For all further purposes this marker counts as a dissatisfied fan.

Effects of the played fan card. If the played fan card has a special ability, that ability comes into effect when the card is played, and the effect is resolved as soon as the camping markers lie on the campsite. Exception: effects relating to Fastfood or drinks (Getränke).

For each fan card played, either Hygiene or Chaos rises or falls. The value is shown on the front and back of the respective fan card and is always the same for all fan groups of a music genre:

GenreTrackValue
PunkrockerChaos+2
MetalheadsChaos+1
ReggaefansHygiene-1
IndiesHygiene-2

The status bars are adjusted accordingly (see example 5). Note: this applies per fan card, not per fan figure.

For each camping marker placed on the campsite on this festival day, a fan of the corresponding genre is now placed (a fan figure).

Example 5: Arrival (part 2). Jens has played the cards "Hipster" and "Heavy Metaller" and laid out the fans and camping markers on the campsite. The Chaos value rises by 1 (for Metalheads) and Hygiene falls by 2 (for Indies). In addition, when the "Heavy Metaller" is played the Chaos value rises by a further 1, since this is the special ability of the Heavy Metaller.

Example 6: Cards played. Karl-Heinz has first played the "Heavy Metaller". They do not want to camp next to the Reggae fans' tents. Next he plays the "Hippies". He places them next to the Metal camping markers. The Metalheads remain satisfied, because their requirements only matter at the moment of playing their card.

2. Events - Afternoon (Nachmittag)

Beginning with player number 1, each player may play an event card with the festival side facing up, OR discard an event card and draw a new one in its place.

3. The Band Plays - Evening (Abend)

The highlight of the day has arrived: the headliner band plays and the music fans stream to the stage.

The band card of the current day is turned over to its reverse side. All fan figures on the campsite may now be redistributed. (Note: only fans on the CAMPSITE are moved; fans that already stand on band cards, stands, upgrades or WIXI toilets from other days are not moved.)

There are the following four options:

Ich geh mal kurz... austreten (I'll just nip to the toilet): Place a fan on a WIXI toilet marker; the Hygiene value rises by 1 (this moves it into the positive range). Only one fan may stand on each WIXI toilet.

The WIXI toilet: "Curse and blessing of every festival visit." (Picture caption.)

Auf zur Band (To the band): Each band has, on its reverse side, as many spaces as its fame (Berühmtheit). The Local Hero band (left) for example has two. A fan may be placed on each of these spaces. For each fan placed in this way there is one Mood point (Stimmungspunkt). Fans can only visit bands that play on the current day. Time travel does not exist in Rock'n Rodeo either.

Upgrades nutzen (Use upgrades): Upgrades may have been bought in advance. Fans can be placed on them to receive special bonuses. The upgrades are described in more detail in the appendix.

Ich hol mir was zum saufen (I'll get something to drink): Each festival starts with two stands; more are added later. Each stand has 1 to 3 free spaces. Fans may be placed on these spaces. For each fan on one of the spaces, the player may immediately take the amount of money shown on the stand.

Naturally, not every fan has the same amount of money available, which is represented by the purchasing power (Kaufkraft). The purchasing power on the fan card states how much money the fans can spend. This amount may not be exceeded (see examples 7 and 8).

Example 7: Shopping (part 1). Sören has two Metalheads and two Reggaefans standing on the tent site. Each of the two fan groups has a total purchasing power of 2K through its fan card. Sören could, for example, place one Metalhead and one Reggaefan on the "Dönermann" and immediately take 4K (2K+2K). In this case the two remaining fans would have no purchasing power left. Sören instead decides to place the two Reggaefans on the "Bierstand" (2 x 1K = 2K) and one Metalhead on the "Dönermann" (2K Euro). One fan is still free for further actions, but has no purchasing power left. Sören may now take 4K Euro in total.

Zusammenlegen (Pooling): When determining purchasing power, all fans of the same genre are counted together. All Metalheads, for example, may use their purchasing power jointly (see example 8).

Fetzen-Stimmung (Mood bonus): If a player manages to fill a stand or a band completely with fans of the same genre, he additionally receives one Mood point. (This does not apply to stands and bands with only one space.)

Ich mag das aber nicht (But I don't like that): Some fan groups have the property that they may not use their purchasing power for Fastfood or drinks. This is noted on the fan card. Other fans of this genre may nevertheless continue to shop at the corresponding stands. In this case the purchasing power of the fan groups with aversions is deducted from the total purchasing power of the respective music genre. The stand types are shown by icon: Fastfood, Getränke (drinks), Sonstiges (other), from left to right.

Nichts zu tun, dann wird gefeiert (Nothing to do, so we party): Fan figures that are still on the campsite at the end of the evening party so hard that they stay in the tent for the rest of the festival. Lay the fan flat on its tent. For the rest of the season it may no longer be moved.

Example 8: Shopping (part 2). Dörte played the fan groups "Heavy Metaller" and "Emos" on Friday. Today (Saturday) she has played the "Rocker". In total, Dörte's Metalheads have a purchasing power of 7K (2K + 3K + 2K). This round Dörte has two Metalheads to place (the played Rockers). In the last round one Metalhead was placed on the "Dönermann", which consumed 2K. The Metalheads therefore still have 5K purchasing power left. This is not enough for both stands, so the player places a fan on the "Markenbier" and takes 4K Euro.

Example 9: Sample turn. Kevin has 3 Punkrocker ("Punker", purchasing power 1K) and 2 Reggaefans ("Hippies", purchasing power 2K). Since the Punkers only have purchasing power of 1K, he places one on the beer and two on the band. He places a Reggaefan on "EMP Merchandise". Since the band is now full and no purchasing power is free, he places the last Reggaefan on a WIXI toilet. The player receives 3K Euro as well as two Mood points and one Hygiene point. Since the band is full of fans of the same music genre, the player receives a bonus Mood point.

4. Day Status - Night (Nacht)

The festival day is coming to an end and slowly it is time to draw up the balance. The status bars are checked and any consequences are handled.

Chaos / Müll (garbage): On the Chaos track it is read off how much garbage (Müll) is produced by the fans. For each garbage bin (Mülltonne) the Chaos marker has reached, a new garbage marker is placed on the campsite. The player may place garbage markers freely himself, and they may even be laid on the dirt spaces (Dreckfelder).

The only requirement is that the garbage is placed adjacent to a camping marker. After all, somebody has to produce the garbage. On a garbage marker no fans may camp, and likewise no garbage marker may be voluntarily placed on a camping marker. A garbage marker thus effectively blocks the campsite space for the arrival of new fans.

If garbage markers already lie on the campsite, the player may decide to stack several garbage markers on one space. For each garbage marker so stacked (more than the first) the player loses one Hygiene point.

If there is no room left for garbage on the campsite, the garbage must be placed next to the campsite; the fans simply throw it over the fence. Each garbage marker placed in this way reduces Hygiene by 1, exactly as stacked garbage does.

Hygiene: If the Hygiene marker has fallen below zero, the player receives the corresponding penalty shown on the festival board (mood deduction, a fan becomes dissatisfied, or a fan goes home). The penalties add up: that is, at a Hygiene value of -5, Mood sinks by one, one fan becomes dissatisfied and one fan goes home. If a fan leaves, his fan figure is put back, but his camping marker remains on the campsite.

Unzufriedene Fans (dissatisfied fans): For every two dissatisfied fans (thumbs down) the player loses one Mood point. As soon as in one round the player loses at least one Mood point through dissatisfied fans, a fan comes to terms with his situation and one camping marker may be turned to the satisfied side (but at most one marker per round).

Example 10: Day status, sample turn. The Chaos value (5) has passed the first garbage bin (3), so a garbage marker is placed. Since the entire campsite is full, the garbage must be stacked on the space that already holds a garbage marker. The Hygiene value thereby drops by 1. Due to the garbage pile-up, Hygiene has sunk to -1 and Mood sinks by 1. Three fans have become dissatisfied, so Mood sinks by a further 1. One fan comes to terms with his situation and a camping marker (in this case a Metalhead) is turned to satisfied.

Phase 2 - Festival (continued)

Day Two and Three

Now the days Saturday and Sunday are played through using the same scheme. Each time of day (from morning to evening) is played one after another. The player with order number one always begins.

Phase 3 - Scoring (Wertung)

After three days it is accomplished: the fans travel home and leave behind a pile of rubble. Now the balance is drawn up: how much profit or loss was made and which festival was the best of all.

Income (Einnahmen)

Before scoring, each player determines his revenue from the tickets sold, less his expenses, and takes the corresponding amount of money.

The calculation is:

Number of fans on the festival (white fan figure) minus number of WIXI toilets (green toilet tile) minus number of garbage markers on and next to the festival grounds (brown cube) minus GGAM fees (1/4 of the income, rounded; only from 6K on!) = total income (Gesamteinnahmen).

Once a player's total income is determined, he takes that amount of money.

GGAM Fees: Optional Rule

The GGAM ("Gemeine Gesellschaft fürs Ausbeuten von Musikern", i.e. "Common Society for the Exploitation of Musicians") demands its contribution after every festival. A quarter of the income (rounded) must be paid to the GGAM. If the income is 5K or less, the manager is within the tax-free allowance and need pay nothing to the GGAM.

0-5K = no fee; 6-7K = 1K; 8-11K = 2K; 12-15K = 3K; and so on.

This is an OPTIONAL RULE and should only be used with experienced players.

Sample calculation: A player has 11 fans, 2 WIXI toilets and 3 garbage markers. He receives 6K Euro (11 - 2 - 3 = 6). If the GGAM rule is in play, the player must additionally pay 1K Euro to the GGAM.

Victory Point Scoring

Now each player receives victory points (Siegpunkte), depending on the success of his festival. First the O.O.R.A. (Official Open-Air Rating Agency) awards prizes for the best festivals.

Best mood (Beste Stimmung): The festival with the highest mood gets one victory point.

Most fans (Meisten Fans): The festival with the most fans gets one victory point.

In a tie, in both cases the festival with the most satisfied fans (thumbs up) wins. If there is a tie here as well, nobody gets the points.

Individual festival points (Individuelle Festivalpunkte): Each player has on his festival card a table showing for which fans (genres) he gets how many points. The number of fan figures is counted.

  • Special case PLUS: e.g. the Metal + Indie icons: the sum of the fans of both genres is counted.
  • Special case KOMBO: the festival with all four genre icons: the "Easter Cross Festival" (as named on the card).

For each combination of 1 Punkrocker, 1 Metalhead, 1 Indie and 1 Reggaefan, the player receives the corresponding victory points.

Example 11: Scoring (part 1). At the end of the game, Kevin has 3 Indies, 2 Reggaefans and 6 Metalheads on his festival grounds. The scoring table on the card for the PLUS combination of Indie and Metal reads: 4-7 fans = 2; 8-10 = 3; 11-13 = 4; 14+ = 5. Kevin therefore has a total of 9 fans in the target group (Zielgruppe) (3 Indies and 6 Metalheads), so he gets 3 victory points. He receives no victory points for the Reggaefans.

Further Victory Points

On the back of the quick-reference card, each player finds a table. Based on the number of his Mood points, satisfied fans, dissatisfied fans, garbage and Hygiene, he now receives -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 victory points in the respective categories.

Example 12: Scoring (part 2). Player Ingo, for example, receives the following points:

CategoryValueVictory points
Mood72 VP
Satisfied fans164 VP
Dissatisfied fans20 VP
Garbage00 VP
Hygiene-1-1 VP
Total5 VP

Finally, the Money

In the last season, the income also counts toward victory points. For every 5K Euro (rounded down) the players receive one victory point.

Onwards to a New Year

All markers are removed from the campsites. The fans return home, and all cards are reshuffled (sorted by their reverse sides as before).

Before the next festival season begins, the order track is reset. The last action before going into the next year: the player with the most victory points receives number 1 on the order track, the player with the second most receives number 2, and so on. In the event of a tie on victory points, the player with the least cash is placed on the higher number.

Game End

After scoring the third festival season, the game ends. The player with the most victory points has won the game and receives the title:

"The most legendary festival of all time (... or until the game is dragged out again)."

All managers who did not win the game are sent off with the advice: "If you ever set foot on my festival grounds again, I'll rip your head off, you idiot!"

Beginner Version (Einsteigerspiel)

For the beginner version the following changes apply to the basic rules:

  • Each player additionally receives, alongside his starting stands, the upgrades Security and Dusche (showers).
  • The beginner game ends after the second season.

Booking phase: No event cards may be played during the booking phase.

Expansion phase: No further stands may be bought during the game (the expansion phase is omitted).

Line-up phase: Each player automatically receives two WIXI toilets; the dirt spaces cannot be turned.

Tip from the designer: Read through one phase at a time (e.g. Booking - buy a band), carry it out completely, and only then read the next chapter and proceed phase by phase. This inevitably leads to each player booking bands somewhat haphazardly in the first round and placing their fans, and most festivals run very chaotically that way. However, the designer's experience has shown that one learns incredibly quickly and has a lot of fun when the first season is simply played straight away (and everything that can be done wrong is done wrong). By the second year, players are fully into the game.

Appendix Note

The printed rules refer to an appendix ("Anhang") that describes the individual event cards, festival cards and upgrades in more detail. That appendix is not part of the 16-page PDF from which this text was transcribed, so those card-level descriptions are not reproduced here. The published credits page is omitted.
