Setup

  • Place the 8 pizza cards pizza-side up in a circle in the middle of the table.
  • Select the robot cards needed depending on number of players:
    • 2 players: Include cards 1, 2, 3, 4 of each color.
    • 3 or 4 players: Include cards 1 to 5 of each color.
    • 5 players: Include cards 1 to 7 of each color.
    • 6 players: Include cards 1 to 8 of each color.

How to Play

  • Deal each player 5 cards. Set unused cards aside.
  • First player (to the dealer's left) selects a card from their hand and lays it down face up in front of them so everyone can see. Do NOT put cards in the middle in a pile. Each player keeps the cards they have selected separate.
  • Player to their left then selects a card from their hand and lays it down in front of them.
  • Play proceeds clockwise.
  • After all players have selected a card, all players pass their hand (un-played cards) to the left.
  • Player to the left of the dealer picks a second card.
  • Play proceeds clockwise. After everyone picks a second card, pass hands again. Repeat until each player has 4 cards face up in front of them. Last card in each player's hand is discarded.

Scoring

The four cards in front of each player are scored as follows:

  • Pairs are worth 2 (a pair can be either two of the same color OR two of the same number)
  • Triples are worth 5 (three of the same color OR three of the same number)
  • Quads are worth 12 (four of the same color OR four of the same number)
  • Runs of 3 are worth 2 (can be same color or different colors or mix of same and different)
  • Runs of 4 are worth 4 (can be same color or different colors or mix of same and different)

Example scoring of hands

  • Red 1, Blue 1, Red 3, Blue 4 is 6 pts: Pair of 1's=2; Pair of Red=2; Pair of Blue=2; No runs; 2+2+2=6
  • Red 1, Blue 1, Purple 3, Yellow 4 is 2 points: Pair of 1's = 2; No color pairs; No runs
  • Red 1, Blue 1, Purple 1, Blue 4 is 7 points: Triple of 1's = 5; Pair of Blue = 2; No runs
  • Red 1; Red 2; Red 4; Red 5 is 12 points: Quad of Red; No runs
  • Red 1; Blue 1; Purple 1; Yellow 1 is 12 points: Quad of 1's; No runs
  • Red 1; Blue 2; Red 3; Yellow 5 is 4 points: Pair of Red = 2; Run of 1/2/3 = 2; 2 + 2 = 4
  • Red 1; Red 2; Red 3; Yellow 5 is 7 points: Triple of Red = 5; Run of 1/2/3 = 2; 5 + 2 = 7
  • Red 2; Red 3; Red 4; Yellow 2 is 11 points: Triple of Red = 5; Pair of 2's = 2; First Run of 2/3/4 (using Red 2) = 2; Second Run of 2/3/4 (using Yellow 2) = 2; 5 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 11
  • Red 1; Blue 2; Purple 3; Purple 4 = 6 points: Pair of Purple = 2; Run of 1/2/3/4 = 4; 2+4=6
  • Red 1; Blue 2; Purple 4; Yellow 5 = 0 points: No Pairs; No Runs
  • Scoring rules are summarized on cards labeled "Scoring Each Hand" if you need a reminder.

Task #1: Highest Total

Add all players' scores for total score. The goal of Task #1 is for the group to get as high a total score as possible. You might want to pass on cards that would be good for you if they would be even better for a teammate! How much pizza did you lose? Use the "Slices of Pizza Lost" table on the Task #1 card (see below). For example, if playing with 4 players and total score is 33, look at the 4-player line. 33 falls in 32-35 so you lose 2 slices of pizza. Turn pizza cards over for the slices the robots ate.

Task #1: Highest Total — Slices of Pizza Lost

Players0 slices lost1 slice lost2 slices lost3 slices lost
221+18-2016-170-15
332+27-3124-260-23
440+36-3932-350-31
548+42-4737-410-36
653+48-5242-470-41

It is helpful to put the Task #1 Slices of Pizza Lost card in the middle during Task #1 to remind what task you are on and to show Pizza Loss cutoffs.

Task #2: Lowest Total

Deal and play again. Add all players' scores. The goal of Task #2 is to get as low a total score as possible. Check Task #2 card for slices lost.

Task #3: Highest Difference

Deal and play again. Try to get the highest difference between highest hand's score and lowest hand's score. If highest is 11 points and lowest is 2 points, then team's score is 9. Some players need to get high scores while others need to get low scores. You cannot tell other players which you plan to do!

Task #4: Lowest Difference

Deal and play again. Try to get the lowest difference between highest hand's score and lowest hand's score. You want your scores to be as similar to each other as possible.

How much pizza do you have left after Task #4?

  • 5+ slices = "Awesome Teamwork!"
  • 3-4 slices = "Pretty Good"
  • 1-2 slices = "Guess you won't starve!"
  • 0 slices = "Happy, Stuffed Robots!"
  • Fewer than 0 slices left = "Go Buy Another Pizza!"

Things You CANNOT Do

  • You cannot tell other players what is in your hand or any hand you've seen so far.
  • You cannot communicate what you plan to collect.
  • You cannot tell other players whether you are trying to get a high score or a low score.
  • You can't tell other players what they should do.

Advanced Tasks ("Extra Toppings")

When you get pretty good at Tasks 1-4, try these advanced tasks:

  • Extra Cheese: Tasks 5-8 correspond to tasks 1-4 (Highest Total, Lowest Total, Highest Diff, Lowest Diff) except pairs, triples, and quads of the same color are negative points! So on Highest Total (Task #5), you want to get runs and pairs/triples/quads of the same number but avoid pairs, triples, and quads of the same color.
  • Extra Pepperoni: Tasks 9-12 correspond to tasks 1-4 except runs are negative points! So on Highest Total (Task #9), you want to get pairs/triples/quads but avoid runs.
  • Extra Veggies: Tasks 13-16 correspond to tasks 1-4 except pairs are negative points! This applies to pairs of the same color or pairs of the same number. But triples and quads are positive points! So to get a triple you'll need to temporarily risk taking negative points by holding a pair.
  • Anchovies: Tasks 17-20 correspond to tasks 1-4 except each hand's final score is the distance the calculated score is from 7. So if you calculate 12 points, then the distance from 12 to 7 is 5 (12-7=5). If you calculate 7 points, then 7-7 = 0 points. If you calculate 0 points, then the distance from 0 to 7 is 7 points (7-0=7). This will always be a positive number since distance is always positive.
  • Chicago-Style Deep-Dish: Tasks 21-24 correspond to tasks 1-4 except any pair, triple, quad or run that contains a red robot (Larry) is negative points!
  • Combo Supreme: Randomly select 4 of the 24 tasks and try to beat the robots!
