How to Win
The player with the most points in his or her scoring pile wins the game. If a card is worth points, the amount will be displayed in the lower-left corner of that card.
Setup
Shuffle the deck and place it face-down in the middle of the table. To one side of the deck, deal four cards face-up in middle of the table. These community cards are called the "freeway." On the opposite side of the deck will be the discard pile where cards are placed face-up after they are out-of-play and not to be used again.
Cards in the middle of the table:
- The Freeway: four face-up community cards.
- Face-Down Deck.
- Face-Up Discard Pile (starts empty).
During game play, each player will place their personal cards face-up in front of him or her, for all players to see. This is each player's "lane." Each player will also create a face-down scoring pile when he or she scores points. The face-down cards in your scoring pile and their point values are a secret until the end of the game.
Each player's cards in front of him or her:
- Your Personal Lane: face-up (starts empty).
- Face-Down Scoring Pile (starts empty).
Types of Cards
There are three types of Roadkill Rivals cards.
- Animal cards: These cards are organized from weakest to strongest, with strengths between one and five. You want to collect animals and run them over to score points. Notice that the animal's scoring points are the same value as the animal's strength.
- Vehicle cards: These cards are organized from smallest to largest, with strengths of between two and six. You will need this type of card to run over and kill the animals. Some vehicle cards are worth one scoring point.
- Roadside cards: These cards guide you to do different actions, some helpful and some harmful. If you choose to take a roadside card, follow the instructionos immediately and move the card to the discard pile, unless instructed otherwise. The two Police cards are unique roadside cards; they are the only roadside cards that a players can add to his or her lane.
Who Goes First?
You decide who goes first... The youngest person? or... The most recent birthday? or... Whoever hates roadkill the most?
On Your Turn
On your turn, you must do one (and only one) of these four actions:
-
Take a card from the freeway: Take one of the four freeway cards, and add it to your lane. (If it's a roadside card, then follow the directions on that card.) Then replace the empty freeway spot with the top card from the deck. There should always be four community cards face-up on the freeway. Now your turn is over.
-
Create roadkill & score points: Use your vehicle(s) to run over your animal(s). All cards must currently be in your lane, and the total strength of the vehicle(s) must be equal-to or greater-than the animals(s). Put those vehicle(s) and animal(s) face down into your scoring pile. Your turn is over. (View the chart in the next column for more details about creating roadkill.)
-
Wreck a vehicle: If you have a Big Rig or RV in your lane, you can wreck a smaller vehicle (i.e. lower number) in an opponent's lane. Your opponent has to put his or her wrecked vehicle in the discard pile, but your Big Rig or RV stays in your lane unharmed. Your turn is over.
-
Attack an animal: Similarly, if you have a Rattler or Coyote in your lane, you can attack a weaker animal (i.e. lower number) in an opponent's lane. He or she has to put the attacked animal in the discard pile, but your Rattler or Coyote stays in your lane unharmed. Now your turn is over.
Lastly, when your turn is over, the player to your left takes his or her turn. Play rotates clockwise around the table.
Creating Roadkill
The strength of the vehicle(s) must be greater- than or equal-to the strength of the animal(s). All card must be in your lane. You may use multiple vehicles or animals.
The sheet illustrates this with the following examples (vehicle and animal cards are shown by strength):
- Vehicle 4, Animal 3. YES, VEHICLE IS BIGGER.
- Vehicle 4, Animal 4. YES, VEHICLE IS EQUAL.
- Vehicle 4, Animal 5. NO, VEHICLE IS SMALLER. (Marked with a cross on the sheet.)
- Vehicle 4, Animal 2, Animal 1. YES, VEHICLE IS BIGGER OR EQUAL THAN BOTH.
- Vehicle 2, Vehicle 2, Animal 4. YES, COMBINED VEHICLES ARE BIGGER OR EQUAL.
Extra Turns
Notice that if you take a Skunk or a Dirtbike card, then you will gain another immediate turn, and you can choose any of the four actions for this extra turn.
Also notice that the Lottery Ticket cards will reward you with two extra turns!
Car Keys
Notice that all of the cards that can be placed into your lane have icons of car keys in the lower-right corner. Most cards have one key, but the Big Rigs and Rattlers have two keys.
Each player must have three or fewer keys in their lane at all times. If drawing a new card forces you over the three-key limit, then you must immediately discard one of the previous cards, before adding the newly-drawn card to your lane.
The End of the Game
The game ends when the last card from the face-down deck is transferred from the deck to the freeway. At this moment, put all the freeway cards into the discard pile. Each player puts all of the cards in his or her lane into his or her face-down scoring pile. (So stock up on cards worth points near the end of the game.)
Then each player adds up all their scored points in the scoring pile (the black numbers in the lower-left corner of the cards). The player with the most points wins. If the game results in a tie, the player with the most total cards in his or her scoring pile wins the tiebreaker.
