- 43 "Contrat" cards. Each shows 3 movements and one landmark: house, ambulance, bicycle, tree, street lamp, stop sign or traffic light.
- 7 "Police Agent" cards. Each reproduces one of the landmarks with an agent shown either from the front or from behind. Depending on the case, the right and left of the agent are therefore reversed.
Setup
The seven Agent cards are laid out in a circle on the table, face up. Their order does not matter, but the feet of the agents must point toward the inside of the circle.
The 43 Contrat cards are shuffled and stacked face down in the centre of the circle. This is the draw pile.
Principle of the Game
The 7 Agents form a circle on the table. On each turn, the Contrat card requires starting from a given landmark and chaining three movements, of greater or lesser length, to the left or to the right of the agents concerned. You must be the fastest to find where these movements lead in order to win the Contrat card at stake. The winner is the player who collects the most.
Directions are shown on the diagram as follows: for an agent shown from the front, "Right" points to the left of the picture and "Left" points to the right. For an agent shown from behind, the directions are reversed.
Playing the Game
The oldest player turns over the top card of the draw pile. The game starts as soon as that card is visible, and all players play simultaneously. The card shows a starting landmark and 3 movement instructions.
The landmark determines the Agent from which the first movement must begin.
Without speaking and without using their hands, each player mentally works out which card the movements lead to. As soon as a player finds the "Carte d'arrivée" (destination card), they say the name of the object shown on it.
Example: The Contrat card shows the house, 3 moves left, 1 move right, then 4 moves left.
The movement therefore begins from the card showing the house, where the agent is shown from the front. From there, one first moves 3 cards to the left of the agent, respecting their position: here, one arrives at the card with the street lamp. Then one comes back 1 card to the right of the agent found there, who is also shown from the front, to reach the card showing the tree. Then one moves 4 cards to the left of the agent found there. This agent is shown from behind, so one does not change direction, and one finally ends on the card showing a bicycle. The correct answer is therefore: "Bicycle"!
The first player who gives the correct answer is rewarded with the Contrat card, which they place in front of them, face down. If a player gives a wrong answer, they are eliminated for this round and may no longer speak. If they had already won cards previously, they must give one back as a penalty.
A new round then begins: the next player reveals the top card of the draw pile, and everyone searches until a player gives the solution, and so on.
When several players give the correct answer at the same time, a new round must break the tie. The Contrat card is placed back under the pile and a new Contrat card is revealed: only the players concerned may play.
End of the Game
The first player to win six cards is declared the winner. Depending on the number of players and the desired playing time, this goal may be changed.
Progressive Variant for Beginners
Distinguishing left from right poses problems for many children, and even for adults, especially when referring to people who face us or who turn their backs to us. It is possible to approach the game progressively: at first, one only takes into account the first movement indicated by the Contrat card. As soon as the players wish, one adds the second instruction. Then, once everyone has understood the mechanism, one plays normally.
