Can I feed crystals from the food-to-crystal card back into the same conversion to repeat it?

No. Choosing to convert 1, 2 or 3 food happens all at once, so produced crystals cannot be turned back into food mid-effect, and the same goes for a machine you pay with its own output. The designer says not to allow it, though a group may agree otherwise.
