24 cards (8 character cards, 3 cards each: A, B, C. The value of cards increases from 1A to 8C).
The Aim of the Game
The aim of the game is to have a card with the highest value on top of your stack at the end of the game.
Game Setup
- All cards should be precisely shuffled. In a 2 player game, each player receives 7 cards (6 cards in a 3 player game).
- The remaining cards are placed face down in the centre of the table. Those cards form the pile of mercenaries.
- The order of playing cards in the first round is determined in a following way. Each player chooses one of the cards from his/her hand and puts it face down in front of him/her. When all of the players make their choices, the cards are revealed. The player with a card of the highest value decides in what order the cards will be played in that round. The players then move the firstly played cards beside them. Those cards make the stacks.
NOTE: Each player can look up the cards in his/her stack at any moment of the game.
Example: Initial set up for 3 players:
The Cards
The deck has eight character cards, numbered 1 to 8, with three cards for each number marked A, B and C. Cards 1 to 4 are green and their actions are performed from the top of a stack. Cards 5 to 8 are red and their actions can only be performed while they are on a battlefield.
Green cards (action from the top of your stack):
- 1 - Replace a card from your hand with a card from the top of any stack.
- 2 - Put any number of cards from your hand to the bottom of the pile of mercenaries and take the same number of cards on your hand from the top of that pile.
- 3 - Take a card from the top of the pile of mercenaries on hand.
- 4 - Move one card from battlefield on top of any stack.
Red cards (action from the battlefield):
- 5 - Move a card from any battlefield to your battlefield.
- 6 - Take a card from the top of any stack and place it on the bottom of the pile of mercenaries.
- 7 - Take any card marked with the same letter as this card from your stack and place it on top of your stack.
- 8 - Shuffle any stack.
Course of the Game
The game lasts few rounds. Each of those rounds is divided into 3 subsequent phases:
1. Playing the Cards
The player who has got a card with the highest value on top of his/her stack decides in what order the players will place their cards on the battlefield. According to that order, each player places one face up card in front of him/her, creating his/her own battlefield.
NOTE: There may be more than one card on each battlefield. The new cards are placed beside the cards placed earlier.
Example: Adam has got a card with the highest value on top of his stack so he decides about the order in which the players will place the cards on their battlefields. In accordance to that order each player places one card on his/her own battlefield.
2. The Battle
The battle is won by a player who played a card with the highest value on his/her battlefield. The card with the highest value stays on the battlefield on its owner's side. The other cards are placed on top of the player's stack.
Example: The card with the highest value on all of the battlefields is Laura's 4A, that is why it stays on her battlefield while cards 3B and 1C from Adam's and Robert's battlefields are placed on top of their stacks.
3. Perform Actions From the Cards
Players can (but do not have to) perform the actions from the green cards on top of their stacks. Starting is the player with the card of the lowest value (in order from 1A to 4C).
NOTE: If, in the result of other players actions there is a new green card on top of any player's stack, that player can perform an action from that card (if it does not change the order of cards). New green cards may appear on more than one player's stack. You have to remember about the order of a play when performing an action from the new card.
Example: Before performing the actions from the cards, the card with the lowest value is Adam's 1C. He can perform an action from the card before the other players. Then, Robert (3B) and the last one to perform an action from her card is Laura (4A).
The 1C card on top of Adam's stack allows him to replace one card from his hand with one card from the top of any stack. He decides to change a 1C card from his stack with a 4C card from his hand.
Robert is performing an action from his card (3B). He takes a card from the top of the pile of mercenaries on hand.
Laura's card (4A) allows her to take one card from any battlefield and place it on top of any stack. Laura performs that action and takes a card from Robert's battlefield (5B) and places it on top of her stack.
Because there is a new card on Adam's stack (4C), he can perform a second action in that round (since the order of playing cards is kept). He takes card from Laura's battlefield (8A) and places it on top of his stack. The round is over cause none of the players can perform action from the cards on the top of their stacks.
NOTE: The actions from the red cards can only be performed when those cards are on the battlefields.
Example: After performing actions from the green cards:
The End of the Round
If after the third phase, each player has at least one card on his/her hand, a new round starts.
The End of the Game
If, at least one player does not have cards on hand, it means that the end of the game is near. In such a situation, a new round starts. In this round the players can perform actions only from the red cards on their battlefields in the increasing order (from 5A to 8C). The player with the card of the highest value on top of his/her stack wins the game.
NOTE: Remember that the cards with the same number, but marked with C, have higher values than the cards marked with B and A.
