Can a plain damage or injure icon hit a protected card?
The rulebook states the default, and the designer's FAQ and later replies explain how card text overrides it.

No — a damage or injure icon on its own hits only an unprotected card in an opponent's column. Extra targeting words on the card (any, all, one of, or a named target) override that rule and follow the card's own wording.
