Does it matter if a lone person sits in the front row or the middle row?
No — a person alone in a column is unprotected and protects the camp behind it, wherever it sits. Rows only matter once a second person joins, and you then choose whether it goes in front or behind. Many players put a lone person in the middle row for clarity, but that is optional.
