What can I do when all six person spaces are full and I want to play another person?
The designer wrote this rule change into the 2023 rulebook (v1.2) and confirmed it repeatedly, and the rulebook's Play Card section states it.

You may still play the person, but you must first destroy one of your own people to free a space. The destroy is free, needs no targeting card, and the person you destroy can be undamaged. This applies however the person arrives: the Play Card action, an event effect, a trait, a junk effect or an ability.
