Before the First Game
Stick the stickers from the sticker sheet onto the matching colored wooden discs.
Attention! You can tell which sticker belongs to which wooden disc by the color scheme of the character cards. A few stickers for expansion characters are already included in the box, which you can stick onto the back of the matching colored disc.
The Characters
Many different characters take part in Quiz Club. Each character brings along both a character card and a set of question cards from various categories. So each character has their own areas of interest.
The characters in the base game and their specialties are as follows:
Lisa, the agile activist, is committed to environmental protection, feminism, and justice. She is interested in current events in society.
Bernd, the rough rock 'n' roller, knows his way around Germany and the USA, is interested in the politics of the old West Germany (BRD), in art, and of course in music.
Esther, the clever artist, likes fine things such as architecture and painting, romantic books and films. She is fascinated by how language becomes literature.
Torben, the worldly wellness expert, knows how to enjoy life, appreciates good food, exotic places, and is interested in high culture and niche sports.
Marike, the inquisitive astronaut, is interested in the Earth and outer space, but also geology and medicine. In her free time she reads classic literature.
Emma, the cheerful gamer, knows all about the latest trends and shows, likes audio dramas, science fiction and fantasy, and of course all kinds of games.
Gregori, the eloquent scientist, knows his way around all the natural sciences. He is interested in inventions and anatomy and calculates almost everything in his head.
Arnold, the sharp-witted craftsman, understands finance, economics, and computers, has a good memory for numbers, and is fascinated by technical achievements.
The character card is your representation in the game and has no other purpose. It shows who has already been asked a question in each round and who has not. During setup you can simply choose a character that you like.
The question cards belonging to a character can be recognized by the portrait in the upper right corner. This lets you adjust your play experience by removing or re-adding a character's question cards.
Expansions
There are already several expansions available for Quiz Club, each of which brings a new character card and a stack of question cards that can be sorted into or removed from the game. For example, you could mix the "Hunter & Cron Board Game Questions" expansion into the game for rounds with your board-gaming friends.
This way you can adapt the content of Quiz Club to your particular group of players (and not confuse Aunt Erna at Christmas with specialized geek questions from the Roleplaying expansion). Though with Quiz Club it's often enough to know who you should ask...
The following expansion packs are available:
- Board & Card Games
- Roleplaying & Geek Knowledge
- Science Fiction & Science
- News, Trends & Catastrophes
- Foreign Countries & Adventure
Setup
Quiz Club is set up quickly...
-
First, place the game board (score track) in the middle of the table and put the round indicator next to the first space of the round track.
-
Each player picks a character card, places it face up (with the colored side facing up) in front of her, and thereby shows that she has not yet been asked a question this round. Which character card you choose does not matter for the game. Take one that you like.
Through expansions, several character cards of the same color can enter the game. Make sure that each player gets her own color.
-
Each player also receives a wooden disc (matching the color of her character card) and places it next to the start space on the game board.
-
Whoever most resembles her game character receives the starting player card and places it in front of her. Alternatively, you can of course let chance decide.
-
The question cards have two different sides — one with a dark border and one with a light border. Decide together on one side (there is no difference in the questions), shuffle the cards, and form a draw pile. In this game, all players use the side with the chosen border.
Attention! It is not allowed to turn the cards over during the game or to ask a question printed on the back of a card.
-
Now deal 5 cards to each player and give everyone a little time to skim the questions. The game can begin.
How to Play
Cooperative Round
The player whose turn it is (the active player) carries out the following steps in order. The starting player begins.
1. Choose a fellow player
First, the active player decides who she wants to ask a question. Important: she can only choose a fellow player who has not yet been asked a question this round. Whether a fellow player has already been asked a question this round can be seen from which side her character card is showing.
2. Ask a question
The active player chooses a card from her hand and reads one of the three questions printed on it out loud.
You can tell a question's difficulty level from its position, arranged from top (easy) to bottom (hard), and from the small dots next to the question (•/••/•••). A single dot stands for an easy question, and three dots for a difficult question.
The card layout marks: Category (top), Question type (see the Question Types section), and Difficulty level (the dots).
If the player who was asked answers the question correctly:
Both fellow players (the active player and the player who was asked) receive 1, 2, or 3 victory points, depending on the difficulty level of the chosen question. Their wooden discs are advanced on the score track accordingly.
If the question is answered incorrectly:
Neither the active player nor the player who was asked receives any points. Both come away empty-handed.
Note: A "/" means that either one of the answers given is sufficient.
3. Discard and draw a question card
The question card that was used is then placed on the discard pile (regardless of whether the question was answered correctly or incorrectly).
The active player draws a new question card, takes it into her hand, and turns it to the side (light or dark border) that all players agreed on at the start of the game.
4. Turn over the character card
The player who was asked turns her character card over, showing that she cannot be asked another question this round.
The player to her left (clockwise) now becomes the active player. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until every player has been asked a question once.
Starting a New Round
When no character cards remain face up (meaning no player can be asked a question anymore), the current round ends and the starting player card is passed clockwise.
The round marker is moved to the next space, and all character cards are turned face up again, so that every player can be asked a question again.
It is theoretically possible for the last active player in a round to only be able to choose herself. That player simply receives 3 points immediately. So you should try to avoid letting that happen...
Attention! Before a cooperative round is played again, a competitive round is played first, which works a little differently. The two round types always alternate throughout the game.
Competitive Round
In a competitive round, nothing changes for the player answering the question. She receives 1, 2, or 3 points, depending on the difficulty level of the chosen question. However, the active player who asks the question only receives points if the answering player does not know the answer.
The active player receives...
- 3 points for an incorrectly answered •-question
- 2 points for an incorrectly answered ••-question, and only
- 1 point for an incorrectly answered •••-question.
Remember: the easier a question is that the player being asked cannot answer, the better for the player asking it.
Permanently Discarding Cards
Every player whose wooden disc moves past one of the marker lines on the score track must reduce the number of cards in her hand by one (that is, permanently discard a question card of her own choosing).
If a player must draw a new question card as usual and, in the same round, also moves her wooden disc past one of the marker lines on the score track, she first draws a new question card and only afterward permanently discards a question card (this can even be the card that was just drawn).
Question Types
There are various types of questions, which are handled differently:
Knowledge
Knowledge questions must be answered correctly without help. Don't be too strict, since Quiz Club is all about having fun.
Multiple Choice
For questions of the "Multiple Choice" type, four possible answers are given. Only one of them is correct.
Estimate
For questions of the "Estimate" type, a number is asked for. The player being asked does not need to know the exact answer. If her answer falls within the permitted margin of error, the question counts as answered correctly.
Note: the permitted margin of error is not read aloud when the question is asked!
Ranking
For questions of the "Ranking" type, 4 terms are named that must be put into the correct order.
Note: when answering the question, it does not matter whether the ranking is given in ascending or descending order; both possible answers are correct. (Example: the solution is D A B C; in this case the answer C B A D is also correct.)
Intuition
Questions of the "Intuition" type are a little different from the others. Here, the correct answer depends on the fellow players. There are two variants:
Variant A: How many of the fellow players qualify? Example question: "How many of the fellow players already bought gingerbread last October?"
Variant B: Does a fellow player qualify, and who is it? Example question: "Was a fellow player in Tokyo in the last 12 months, and if so, who?"
If the answering player is right, she gets the points. The answering player may also decide that no one meets the requirements. The question counts as answered correctly as long as no one says "Actually, I do!"
Important: for Intuition questions, you may not choose yourself. Example question: "Can anyone in the group roll their tongue?" Players who are meant to answer this question may not include themselves when answering.
End of the Game
The game ends after the sixth round. The player who is furthest ahead on the score track, and therefore has scored the most points, wins. If several players have the same score, or reach or even pass the final space on the score track, they win together.
And now we wish you lots of fun in Quiz Club!
