Racking Your Brain !
The 7 Letter cards and 20 Category cards with the ! icon should only be used by those who want an even greater challenge! We are warning you...
For everyone else, they should be removed and put back in the game box before setup.
Setup
- Place the Board in the center of the table, with the blue side face up.
- Give each player 2 Brains of the same color, placing one on the first space of the Board and the other in front of them.
- Separate the 4 Challenge cards: Só no Palpite ("Just a Guess"), Batalha Mental ("Mental Battle"), Batata Quente ("Hot Potato") and Furacão Cerebral ("Brain Hurricane"). The 6 yellow Challenge cards are used only in Extravaganza Mode.
- Shuffle the Letters and Categories separately and form a draw pile for each, face down.
- Keep a cell phone or other chosen device as a timer close to everyone and set the time to 30 seconds.
How to Play
The player with the biggest cranium becomes the Active Player and starts the game, following the phases described below:
1. Prepare the round
Look at the space the Active Player's Brain is on in the Board. This will be the Round Challenge. Read the instructions of the Challenge card aloud to all players.
Example, Só no Palpite card:
- PREPARATION: Place on the table: 1 Letter face up; 4 Categories face down. The other players keep their Brains in hand.
- PLAYING: Reveal the Categories one at a time and try to answer them following the Letter. If you do not know, skip to the next one, discarding the Category. The other players may answer a Category in your place. Whoever answers first, placing their Brain on the Category, takes it!
- SCORING: You advance 1 for each Category answered. The other players with a Brain on a Category advance 1.
2. Overcome the challenge
When everyone is ready, reveal the cards indicated by the Challenge and simultaneously start the timer (30 seconds).
Race against time! Follow the rules of the Challenge, answering with speed to beat your opponents before time runs out!
3. Toward victory
Advance (green arrow) or Retreat (red arrow) each player's Brains on the Board according to the score of the Round Challenge.
Attention: If a player has to retreat on the Board and it is not possible, instead, all the other players advance!
After the end of the round, the next player clockwise becomes the new Active Player and the game continues until a Brain reaches the last space of the Board.
Answering
To advance on the Board, you must answer the Challenges correctly. To do so, you must say aloud words related to the Categories that start with the revealed Letter.
Some challenges (e.g.: Batata Quente) do not use Letters; in these cases the answers may start with any Letter.
Repeating a word given by another player is NOT considered a valid answer!
The Brain in front of you is used in some Challenges. Whenever a Challenge asks you to answer using the Brain, you must not only be the first to give the correct answer, but also the first to place your Brain on the card. Speed is the key!
(Example: Category "Objeto" with Letter "A"; a player says "ANTENA" and places their Brain on the Category card.)
Attention!
When a rule on the Challenge Cards differs from those contained in this manual, the Card's rule always has priority.
Challenge Types
There are two types of Challenge in Quix!, represented by a lightning bolt and an hourglass on the Challenge Cards.
Real Time (lightning bolt)
In these Challenges all players play at the same time. They are generally speed-based Challenges, in the style of "first to arrive, takes it!"
As soon as the timer is started, the path is free for any player to answer, following the rules of the Challenge Card.
Real Time Challenges shown: Só no Palpite, Batalha Mental, Furacão Cerebral, Dança das Cadeiras.
Turn-based (hourglass)
These Challenges are exactly what the name says, divided into player turns. Start the timer. The first to play is the Active Player, then the next player clockwise and so on. The game continues until time runs out!
Turn-based Challenges shown: Batata Quente, Ruínas em Colapso, Bola de Neve, Começo do Fim.
Challenge Example: Só no Palpite
Get ready for the Challenge! Before starting, the Active Player reveals a Letter and places 4 Categories face down on the table. The other players take their Brains and get ready!
The timer is started and the Active Player reveals one Category at a time, trying to answer them following the Letter before time runs out. If a doubt arises, they can simply discard the card and move on, revealing the next one.
But the other players will not just watch! They can answer in place of the Active Player. Whoever answers first and places the Brain on the Category card secures the point!
(Example with Letter A: "Nome" answered AMANDA; "Super Herói" discarded; "Liga na Tomada" answered ABAJUR with a purple Brain on it; "Animal" answered ABELHA.)
When time runs out, or all cards have been answered (or discarded), it is time to score! For example, if the Active Player discarded the Category "Super Herói" and correctly answered the Categories "Nome" and "Animal", while the purple player answered the Category "Liga na Tomada", then the Active Player advances 2 spaces on the Board, and Purple 1 space!
Challenge Example: Batata Quente
It is Hot Potato time! The Active Player prepares by drawing a Category from the pile without looking. Then the timer is started and the Active Player reveals the Category so everyone can see it and tries to answer it. In this Challenge there are no Letters, just a lot of imagination!
If they succeed, the Category passes to the next player clockwise, who must answer the same Category, and so on, going around the table until time runs out (repeating words is not allowed, okay?).
(Example: Category "Tem no Banheiro", answers TOALHA, ÁGUA, ESPELHO, CHUVEIRO in turn.)
At the end of the Challenge, whoever is holding the Category "loses". All the other players advance 1 space on the Board.
End of the Game
As soon as a player's Brain reaches the end of the Board, they become the winner!
In case of a tie, the tied players compete in the Batalha Mental Challenge. The first to answer correctly wins the game!
Extravaganza
How about a game mode with more chaos, mischief and challenges? Then it is Extravaganza time!
In this mode, each round will have a different Challenge, challenging even the greatest Quix! players.
Setup Differences
- Use the Extravaganza side of the Board.
- Shuffle all 10 Challenge Cards, forming a pile with the art face up.
How to Play
The game follows all the rules of Quix! with one exception. The Round Challenge is always the card on top of the pile.
At the start of the round, the Active Player takes the top card of the pile and reads the rules on the back aloud. At the end of the round, discard the card.
If there are no more Challenge Cards in the pile, shuffle them again, forming a new pile.
Challenge Example: Dança das Cadeiras
Snooze, you lose! Before starting, the Active Player draws 1 Category without looking and places X Letters (X = number of players - 1) face up on the table. All players take their Brains and get ready!
The timer is started and the Active Player reveals the Category so everyone can see it. All players try to answer it with words starting with one of the Letters on the table. Whoever answers first, placing their Brain on the corresponding Letter, takes it!
In the example (Category "Espaço Sideral", Letters P, E, V; answers PLANETA, ESTRELA, VÁCUO), the purple player was not quick enough and was left without a card. The other players are safe; Purple retreats 1 space on the Board.
