- Game board, deck of cards, pair of dice and eleven numbered horses
Directions
-
Remove the aces, kings and jokers from the deck of cards. Shuffle and deal the remaining 44 cards face up in front of each player. Each player may not receive the same amount of cards.
-
Place the eleven numbered horses at the starting gate. Four of the horses must be "scratched" before the race can begin. To do this, the first player rolls the dice and the horse corresponding to the total on the dice is the first horse scratched. This horse is moved ONE space behind the starting gate. All players holding a card that correspond to the scratched horse pay a five-cent chip* to the "pot" and discard that card. (Example: if a 3 and 4 are thrown, horse 7 is scratched and moved ONE space behind the starting gate. All players holding a 7 card pay a five-cent chip to the pot for each 7 card in their hand. The 7 cards are then discarded.)
The next player rolls the dice to determine the second scratched horse and that horse is moved TWO spaces behind the starting gate. All players holding a card that corresponds to the second scratched horse pay a ten-cent chip to the "pot" and discard that card. (Example: if a 2 and 3 are thrown, horse 5 is scratched and moved TWO spaces behind the starting gate. All players holding a 5 card pay a ten-cent chip to the pot for each 5 card in their hand. The 5 cards are then discarded.)
This continues for the third and fourth scratched horses with the horses moving THREE and FOUR spaces behind the starting gate and the amount owed to the pot increasing to a twenty-five cent chip and fifty cent chip, respectively. If, at any time, the number corresponding to an already scratched horse is rolled, the player will pay the designated amount based on the horse's scratched position (five, ten, twenty-five or fifty cent chips respectively) and pass the dice to the next player. The four scratched horses remain in their scratched position for the duration of the game.
-
The horses at the starting gate are now ready for the race to begin. The next player rolls the dice and the horse corresponding to the total on the dice moves ONE space forward towards the finish line. However, if the total on the dice corresponds to a scratched horse, the player must pay the amount designated by the horse's scratched position (five, ten, twenty-five or fifty cent chips respectively) to the pot. Each player takes a turn rolling the dice and either moving a horse forward towards the finish line or paying chips to the pot. Play continues until one of the horses reaches the finish line.
-
All players holding cards corresponding to the winning horse are winners! For each winning card, winners collect 25% of the pot. (Example: if horse 10 wins the race, all players holding a 10 card in their hand collect 25% of the pot. If a player holds two 10 cards, they would collect 50% of the pot, three 10 cards would collect 75% and four 10 cards would collect 100% of the pot.)
