Quantum Surcharge
The Quantum Surcharge is a set of alternate rules that extends the tactical possibilities of the end game and of building sector cards.
Here is the principle:
- Normally you may have only ONE quantum cube on a planet.
- However, if the ONLY space available on the entire map is on a planet where you already have a cube, then you MAY place several cubes on that same planet.
The special case where you place a second (third or fourth) cube of the same colour on a planet is called quantum surcharge. When you build with the quantum surcharge, add 3 to the value of the planet for each cube you have already placed there.
- Don't forget: the quantum surcharge is only possible if you have no other possibility of placing a quantum cube.
- Example: late in the game, the only place where you can build a quantum cube is a planet of size 8 on which you already have a quantum cube. The quantum surcharge raises the planet's value to 11 (B+3) for the purpose of building a second cube there. If you reach infamy, you may place a cube there.
Note: "B" in the printed example stands for the planet's base value (8 in this example). It is kept as printed.
Expert FAQ
Can a ship move during the turn in which it is deployed?
Yes. Ships can move/attack during the turn in which they are deployed.
If a ship goes to the scrapyard (casse), can it move a second time during the same turn?
No. A ship can move (or move/attack) only once per turn. In addition, each ship can use its special ability only once per turn. This remains true even if the ship is destroyed.
Expert FAQ 2
What happens if my domination reaches 6 during the advancement-card phase of my turn?
This can happen, for example, if you choose the tactic card AGGRESSION (AGRESSION) while your domination is 4 or 5. In this case you reach infamy (infamie). You place a quantum cube, immediately reduce your domination to 1, and choose your advancement card.
What happens if my domination reaches 6 during another player's turn?
This can also happen if you possess the card STUBBORN (OBSTINÉ). You place a quantum cube and immediately reduce your domination to 1, and you choose your card at the end of the active player's advancement-card phase.
Command Card Tips
- With TACTICAL (TACTIQUE), you may move only YOUR ships.
- With STRATEGIC (STRATÉGIQUE), your attacking ship gets the bonus only if it attacks from a space next to one of your other ships.
- If you have VORACIOUS (VORACE) and JUST (JUSTE), you get the benefits of both, so your domination is not reduced when one of your ships is destroyed.
- If your opponent uses DANGEROUS (DANGEREUX) on you and all of your ships are destroyed, you cannot benefit from PILLAGER (PILLEUR) or BELLIGERENT (BELLIQUEUX).
- Your total combat value can drop below 1 with cards such as FEROCIOUS (FÉROCE) and STRATEGIC (STRATÉGIQUE).
Additional FAQ
Can I keep tactic cards for a following turn?
No. Tactic cards are always played immediately, as soon as you choose them.
Does the value of "BOUCLE" dice change?
No. For example, FLEXIBLE cannot change a 1 into a 6 or vice versa.
If a ship attacks and loses, where does it go?
The attacker survives and retreats one space from the space from which it launched the attack (it does not retreat all the way back to its starting point).
Isn't the "Curious" card (CURIEUX) a bit too powerful?
For some players, yes. This pack includes an alternative for playing with a less powerful version of the card, if you wish.
Must the flagship move in order to use its special transport ability?
Yes. The flagship (vaisseau amiral) must move 1 or 2 spaces to be able to use its special transport ability.
Can I transport and attack in the same turn?
No. The flagship cannot attack while it is transporting. Moreover, the transported ship must be set down on an empty space. The transported ship can move/attack normally afterwards, as a separate action from the transport.
Can I take other actions during the advancement-card phase of my turn?
No. You cannot take actions or use the special abilities of your ships during your advancement-card phase.
Card Restrictions
- You cannot use CEREBRAL (CÉRÉBRAL) with a domination of 1, and you cannot use TYRANNICAL (TYRANNIQUE) with a research of 1.
- To use REORGANISATION (RÉORGANISATION), choose the dice you want to re-roll and roll them all at the same time. Then place them in orbital position or in the scrapyard (casse).
- If you use REORGANISATION or EXPANSION and you have FURTIVE (FURTIF), you have the option of placing your dice anywhere, as long as it is not next to another die.
- If you use REORGANISATION or EXPANSION and you have CLEVER (ASTUCIEUX), choose the values of the dice.
- If you are attacked and you have STUBBORN (OBSTINÉ), you destroy your opponent and gain domination if your total combat value is greater than or equal to that of your opponent.
New Cards
Try these new cards! They were specifically designed for shorter and more intense games, and to be used with the alternate quantum surcharge rules.
If you use the quantum surcharge, you can create much smaller cards. This means you can ignore the "avoid exclusion" chapter in the suggestions for creating your own cards.
You still need enough quantum cube placement spaces for someone to be able to win! The minimum total number of spaces you need is equal to the total number of quantum cubes in play, plus one, minus the total number of players.
Curious Card (CURIEUX)
Extra peaceful move
Once per turn, you may make a free move if you do not attack during your turn.
Map Revisions
Stellar cartographers of the Quantum universe constantly revise their galactic atlas.
Use these cards in place of the versions included in the base game.
